Hey Guys,

Just a short note to touch base with all the breezers and discuss a situation that has happened this week!

Down our way a couple of SUPers have been frequenting a local well know longboard break!

This break is normally a hang out during the week that is frequented by a few of the old school guys who I have to say have been great and helped out with the OG13 day etc.

This afternoon I got taken aside and was advised that a couple of SUPers were taking every set wave for the last 3 days and rotating that so that anyone else at the break could not get a wave!

The co-operation and good will we have built over 9 months may have been strained by a couple of people that may have been a little on the full on side! There are of course 2 sides to every story and I dont even know who these guys are!

I guess it goes to show that it doesnt take much to upset the apple cart!

I got into sup to surf places without a crowd and there a tons of them down this way!

There is definitely no need to surf crowded local breaks and if you do it doesnt take much to fit in to the line up and get along.

Lets hope its a one off!

No good. Out of all the Melb crew I know that frequent the surf no-one has been down that way this week. Not sure who it might have been?

It's not that hard to let some waves go through even with a few of you in the line-up.
Cam and I surf together a bit and we tend to keep an eye on who's getting waves and make sure everyone gets there share.

It's rare you get any grief unless you hog waves but the problem is once you piss someone off they will be bitter towards all SUP crew. It still isn't getting through to some SUP people I guess.

How do you educate (maybe not the right word) these people if they are not on here?
Maybe eventually through events, social paddles and the association the word could spread

Crikey, what has the world come too?

I can't believe that there are so many inconsiderate sup boarders snaking 1 foot waves from the old school semi-retired mal riders.

What I think we need to do is discuss the issue with the Victorian Police force. I'm sure they could be persuaded to buy 50 purpose built goat boats to patrol all the 1 foot breaks during winter to make sure this sort of stuff doesn't happen again. Even 10 undercover cops riding surfmats fitted with radios and gps units, pretending to be holiday makers, could make a big difference during the winter months.

I assume you are taking the p1ss.
In the coming years this will be a huge issue as wave hogs get on sups.
This is already causing grief in the states with bans proposed in Hawaii.
Try to tune guys as there will be a serious backlash against us if we go like kiting and sup gets a really bad name.

i can see bans happening eventually, firstpoint noosa is a prime target for the non believers, but it probably would only be a paddlecraft ban if it ever happened and wouldnt that upset the clubbies, still the easiest way for us to go is to show prone surfers respect,

Hi Oliver,

This is not the time to take this lightly and I would be very very carful as to how flipantly you treat this! You may be surprised who reads SB forums and your picture is plastered all over Sea Breeze!!!!!!!!!!

Have you got my point yet?????

I have seen all sorts of beach justice handed out on the west coast and I assure you that its not something you wish to deal with!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me enlighten you with some exaples:

When I wrote the below points they were not aimed at Oliver nor was I suggesting that it should happen to anyone! It is a statement of what I have seen happen to others, experienced myself and what I heard has happened when I spoke to the Police about a incident last year!

You will come back to your car and find a mixture of sand and wax has been applied to every window of your car the combination ensures you need to relace them all!

The same can be applied to every panel of your car! the next step up!

You sudden have lowered your car to a more sporty look as there is no air in the tyres or even sportier it is sitting on blocks and you dont have any wheels.

You suddenly have all round AC as you no longer have windows!

Then we go to after you wipe out and your head pops up you will be facing the fins end of a surfboard being rammed at your head! The swim back is not pleasent wondering when mr chompy will appear and the medical bills are also a drag!

This I assure you Oliver is the light end of the stick it gets much more unpleasent from there

Think I am kidding with any of the above, drop into any of the police stations down here and ask them!!!!

We have a great relationship with all the surfers and clubs here and thats the way we want it to stay!

My suggestion is that if we see anyone engaging in this sort of activity "Wave Hogging" we at least have a gentle word with with them!

If we dont self regulate I assure you it will be done fore us!

Best regards

Happy days

Phill

Having reread what I wrote to Oliver yesterday I can now see how it could be seen to imply that I am insighting violence and that is simply not the case, if that is how the post was read then I sincerly appologise without reserve to all!

The written word can be taken in many different contexts unfortunately!

I was not threatening anyone, I was giving examples of what has happened in the past to longboarders, short boarders etc etc on surf breaks both on the west coast and all around the country! I too have experience this first hand, hence the emotion in the thread!

I did take personal offence to Oliver posting what I believed was a reply (no matter how humorous it was intended to be) that in my opinion (rightly or wrongly) would imflame tensions, when I was looking for constructive input!

I have 3 daughters 8, 11 and 13 who I love dearly and want them to be safe and enjoy a sport they love! In this area I have an huge amount of ego and pride and will not appologise for it.

As they are girl surfers and now stand up paddlers as well they are breaking quite a few ridiculous stereotypes.

When the actions of a few inconsiderate people destroying Karma at a local break impacts on them, yes I get emotional.

I cant explain it any better than that!

I've never been able to understand why people can actually come to blows & damage other people's property over a lousy wave. Especially older "mature" guys who should know better!!

Heaps bad attitude from someone who should probably know better
Don't know what your trying to achieve with this but if its regulation then you have offsided 90% of other water users.
Get your ego and self importance reigned in and have another think.

Reason I never really got into surfing was all this macho chest beating crap, it's a bit like like the cyclists on Beach Road getting pushed into the gutter, sure they might have some attitude but does that mean they deserve serious injury!!

Someone takes your wave, OK not friendly, have a word with them, but to go into the water thinking that if you do the wrong thing someone will damage your property or assault you...hello... that is criminal behaviour. If the local "good old boys" do that they should be in gaol, surf etiquette is not even part of this equation.

If the motivation for treating other people in the water fairly and with respect is to avoid a beating then something is very wrong - and those people do not deserve respect. If this is the way the local surfer crew function, I for one don't want any sort of "good will" relationship with them.

why were you taken aside, why don't these people talk to the "wave hogs", would probably be all that was needed. i really believe you shouldn't involved with the likes that think they are above or below the law, geez sounds like the wild west or something down there. if everyone on the goldie started taking things into their hands when they feel they have been wronged, it would be chaos

This can be an issue in Sydney, mainly the abuse comes from the old mal riders who are used to catching their fair share of waves over the years. Can I suggest siting on your board whilst waiting for a wave, this gives the appearance that you are relaxed. The other problem is that sup's stand out and appear to get all the waves.

At the end of the day, we are all surfers who choose different equipment.

Let's relax and share, and show these whinging mal riders that sup's rip.

It's generally the older or local guys that get the shiitts and more often than not they have the shiitts with you and decide to try and ruin your surf even before you've caught a wave. I think this type of attitude is terrible.

BUT, if SUP guys are hogging waves with these type of guys out it won't help our cause as these are the guys that are usually part of the local boardrider club, probably know someone at the local council and are stubborn enough to follow it up.

It's only a handful of breaks that regularly have attitude (whether or not we are hogging waves) and if we just avoid those spots it will help.

As for these rouge SUP hogs, not much we can do!

Longboarders whinging about getting all the waves Theses guys have been doing this for years with disregard for anyone, what goes around comes around so to be honest i dont feel real sorry for them

But it still wouldnt hurt to find out who the guys were and what really went down, Im sure you will find out its no-where near as bad as what the mal riders are whinging about, there just not used to be out done catching waves and now there complaining.

Iv been whinging about mals for years at certain spots, now the shoes on the other foot. Saying that I would still not get every wave and be a pig unless i didnt like them of course.

if a mal rider starts trying the blocking caper, which some do for no real reason, i reckon all bets a off in my books. if we wonted to, in certain conditions, we can take every good wave, but most of us don't

You know what, I might get back on the shortboard and surf those angry breaks and then go to the local Mal guy in town and complain about the mal riders that were hogging all the waves. - I can't believe they approached you Phil. Must be cowards!
What do they expect you to do if you don't know the SUPers in question?

If they have surfed enough they should know how to block SUP's paddling for waves and handle it that way. Unless they are sitting on the shoulder expecting to be given right of way.
