I surf... or used to.
for the pureness of it.
for the solitude.
for the adventure.
for the test of courage.
sadly now I believe the waves have hit critical mass.
it no longer holds that magic, its crowded and
now so mainstream, i wouldn't be surprised to see my mum
paddle out. and i see it getting worst before it gets better.
now with jetski tow ins. even the larger swells will get crowded.
if i wanted a pastime/sport with crowds i woulda played football.
DOOM and GLOOM but you did ask.......

Hey PS,

SUP gives you the ability to get away from the crowds! even at places like 13th which are a zoo in summer there are always other peaks further down or further out you can paddle to that are empty. Often when the shore breaks are full a 5min paddle to the 2nd reefs and your on your own.

I guess because your down Torquay way (Ithink you are) the intensity is at another level yet again, but there are still a lot of seldom visited breaks to the south of there with no one on them. Sure you cant just pull up in the car park and walk 100m to the water but isnt that half the fun.

I dont Sup/Surf anymore because I have been told not too at this point and it's killing me slowly. I am longing to get out on a crowded break and just slide down the line once.

Its all in your perspective I guess.

Phill

It's nearly 50 years coming up, and i still lay in bed at nite and dream about the surf i've just had or the one i'm planning,or the upcoming trip.It's that feeling of weightlessness coming out of turns,the feeling of the water,the stoke with your mates,wondering what your new boards going to go like,the feeling in the pit of your stomach when you see a super wave and you just can't waite to get out there,because your afraid it might go off before you can get out amongst it.I mean all those things and a billion more,just love it.

Good answer ! I agree... However there were a few days back in June when Tea Tree Bay seemed to be exactly the same, day after day on the evening low tide, set after set.... only thigh high and smaller, but perfect.....

I've always liked Parko's answers to these two questions;

Favorite Wave: Long Ones
Favorite Maneuver: Big Ones

Plus a fairly high profile Stand Up Paddler has this to say;

You can find me at the beach about 360 days a year... When theres surf, ill be surfing, when theres wind, ill be paddling, If its dark, ill be drinking, and if your really lucky when it rains you might find me at the gym... (I Hate Weights, There Too Damn Heavy) Oh Yeah and sometimes I go to class and work... but honestly, I need enough money to be comfortable. Lifes too short to spend it working...
Just about Anything active will get me excited... I hate sitting around doing nothing wasting time... unless im tired... then its not a waste, im just resting...

(I thought it was worth sharing! A good motto for life I reckon!!!)
