I don't know how many of your guy's come from a surfing background?
But 34 wide will not cut the mustard.

Gorgo, and if you don't aspire to surf like Kelly Slater, well its game over for you folks.
To improve in sport or life, you need goals

Aspire to be like Kelly Slater?
Sure!
I would love to crack open a can of Fosters while riding in the barrell at Teahupoo like he did in 2005.
I just wouldnt know what to do with the paddle while trying to open the can.
Maybe thats one for "The Watermans League" to try when theyre there.

Errr I dunno if your on the crack pipe up there Mac but 34' wide should be fine....I seem to remember when everyone rode 17' wide shoties cause kelly did it...then bannana's cause Herro was doing it....just cause it works or doesn't work for you doesn't mean it won't work for someone else....hopefully Rod will wade it and explain that wide does work

I think it totally depends on the type of waves you are surfing.
Small average waves like we get around Perth may be nice and fun on a wide board. Once you get into decent waves though it is another story.
Just been in Margaret River for a week in 'real' surf and can't imagine surfing those waves on anything wider than 30" max.

Alot of blokes would say the same about riding a shortie thats over 19in wide....my boards start at 20in and they all go fine in everything up to triple overhead...over that you'll need to check with someone who has a larger set than mine

Whatever works for you is right.
For me and most reasonable surfers I know 30 inches wide and over does not feel that good in big fast surf. It is much harder to go from rail to rail with a nice flow. The boards tend to track. The 08 Starboard 9 8 was a case in point; great in tiny stuff but hard work in overhead surf, even the 09 still, to me, tracks a bit due to the width when you are going really fast. Some people may be able to do it good on them.
Designers at JL and PSH stay below that 30" barrier at the moment and I like the feel of them in solid surf.
A mates got a whopper will try it soon. Must admit it just looks wrong though, may be it is a mental thing.

Someone down the local on a whopper today

They look pretty rockered up, but IMO 34" seems to be extremely wide. Probably a good board for anything around waist to shoulder, anything bigger your going to struggle with rail to rail moves.

A 34" wide board would be downright dangerous down south, even the beach breaks would be way to heavy for such a wide tank, def becomes a bit different I reckon when you start talking about "real waves". Imagine bottom turning one at Gas, or Grunters, even Redgate at 4ft

The good crew from standuppaddle.com.au lent me one for demo, and I loved it.

Took a while to get into the swing of it, but I ended the sesh wanting more.

Because it looks big, I thought it would be slow to turn & respond, but once you start getting aggressive with it, you can really throw it around & it responds. Heaps of nose rocker saved my hide a few times on some steep drops.

Sure, it ain't no 6 footer, but geez it's a fun board to be on and really enjoyed the sesh.

Thumbs up from me.

I must be honest one thing I do love about all the starboards is they have great nose rocker.
Still one of the best big boards I have ridden was the 11 2 " starboard had great nose rocker.
