Lucky me ! Just come back from Bali. and what a holiday. Apart from an AWESOME 10 day off road mountain bike tour (that's another story) I was lucky enough to get two SUP sessions in. And heres how it went ...

First we went to see Janke at www.bali-standuppaddle.org he is based over at Sanur Beach where we were staying, and very handy to the reefs breaks off there. He gets on this forum sometimes and writes in his Italian accent, just as he speaks it.he is a funny sort of charismatic character ! So me and two mates who are new to SUP but could surf go out the baby reef on some nice starboards , he had 12ft down to 9.8, the 9.8 was really good, and suited me on the reef break. The price included your board paddle leggie and reef booties and two guides/instructors for the three of us. Booties were not really needed as the reef was not too sharp and it was shoulder deep in most spots, but a good precaution anyway. There was a lovely approx 2 -3 foot roller coming in across the reef, which was a left break, and backhand to me! Janke said hey why don't you just switch over to goofy foot? So I tried it and sure enough I could! Anyways a lot of fun was had in the 3 hours and we left the water really trashed and he had my beginner mates stoked at a new sport!!! Which meant we had to go out again after our bike tour was done..

Sure enough we got back from the bike tour in one piece (don't know how!) and wanted to head out again, this time we were staying in the heart of Kuta Beach, so I contacted a shop there, Peter from supbali.com at Legian Beach. Peter was great - he arranged 3 brand new Starboards for our session, and the nice yellow 10.5 Drive took my attention immediately! Peter had some new/prototype starboards and was configuring the fin combos for starboard development, he knew his stuff and was some sort of surfer too!
Peter drove us and the gear up to Canggu beach 15 mins north of Kuta , where the break was a fair bit bigger and fatter than Baby reef. I was scared already! Peter gave us a hand getting past the shore break and out we went in the deeper channel, easy as. So he then dragged us on over to the break, giving us the full run down on safety and exactly where to line up for the waves. It was awesome! It was a much bigger wave than I had ever surfed before and I was scared as, but managed to paddle onto a few and scare myself stupid, at the same to having a GREAT time.strange isn't it!

Both the trips were about the same price, $50 US for 3 hours (or until your totally done!) and I can say well well worth it!

I know where my next holiday is for sure! Photos of Canggu below...

(heres my blog on the MTB trip if your interested how that went bushrangers.org/?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=55&func=view&catid=10&id=1322

Definitely take your own paddle as they were all plastic and heavy when I was there.
Been paddle boarding with Pete from SUPBali around Canggu a few times and highly recommend it. Great guy and knows the area really well, lots of good uncrowded waves to be had and even a few off-shore bombies......sooo good!

Why not just stick one of those magic holograms on the heavy plastic paddles?

The paddle Pete gave me was a good quality Starboard, and Janke gave me a plastic, alloy one. I didnt care too much - it was all good!

Take plenty of sunscreen, or rashie- these things are exxy in Bali for some reason.

I don't know about that,I gave my old $60 rashie to my boat driver last June and purchased a new Quikie for $30 AU at the Quik shopI always take a huge suitcase of old cloths/phones/bags,bloody anything, after many trips I have many friends in Bali and they really look after you, which will save you a fortune!

Bring you paddle as what we have are good for beginner...
Some are Starboard fix aluminum and some are fiberglass.
Maybe for next year I will be able to upgrade also the paddles....
I have an hologram on my paddle but it doesn't make it lighter

Rob christmas time is a great time for SUPping here as the winds have swung & we get to SUP the other side of the Island which offers mainly rights like Nusa Dua & others which are sick , fun & perfect for SUPping. Generally as a rule the rain comes in around 11am & that is normally the only hassle if you are out & about shopping but as far as being in the water it just means midday glass offs .

Reading all this psyches me to go back to Bali. After a couple of weeks shortboarding, early June I hooked up with Jankie for some SUPing at Sanur. Knee to head high reef breaks over 4 days. With warm air and water, the waves were fun, with the last day being the biggest and challenging. Got to ride a range of decent equipment from 10' to 9'. Like Sunny, the 9'8" JL was my favourite. Jankie let me use a prototype timber paddle which was good for my height. He went the extra mile to help me have an excellent SUP surfing experience, which topped off a great 3 weeks in total. Yep, my technique & stoke went forward a leap for this branch of the surfing tree. I'd love to go back to Bali for more.
