It was a beautiful day down at The Pines today.. Warm, sunny, no wind and nice little waves.

Thanks to SHQ for putting on a great demo day.. Here's a few pictures.

The Mactavish was a surprise for me BP.I was a bit skeptical before riding it,
even saying it looks like a scaled down Uber Fish[which it definitely isn't] but it handles really easy onto and on the wave although these small waves weren't much of a test but the board gave me an O.K first impression and didn't do anything badly.Even the smooth deck grip looks like it won't work but I had no issues with slipping at all so was all good.
Cheers,
Camo.

Looks like a chunky steak. Might be the photos but i see now why its rated for a large rider.

The naish 9'6 looks more in proportion and its standard recomendation of 85kgs

But like i mentioned it could be the photos.

Wooooo. I'm all paddled out. Sitting at home with a cup of tea after a SUP orgy.

We had clean 1-2' surf and the wind swung onshorish. The surf was a bit small to judge surfability but we got a few clean ones and the mushburgers were easy to catch. The wind made for enough lumps to allow a proper test of the boards. (Any board can be good in clean surf.)

There were several surfers there and the chat was pretty friendly among the different species.

I paddled:

Naish Glide 14'. A bit heavy on the carry up the beach. Nice to paddle. A tiny bit wobbley. I had to fight the urge to paddle off down the coast. Easy to catch any ripples that passed by. Riding straight in was fun but turning onto the face usually resulted in the rollover of death. DJ and I had just agreed it was not suited to the surf when Peter (?) drops into a wave, steps back and carves a turn and trims along the face. Showoff. Maybe with a bit more practice.

PSH 10'6" Wide AA. Comfortably stable. Light enough to carry. Handles nicely on small waves. Good board.

Naish 9'6" Nalu. Very light. Felt a little tippy but easy enough to stand on. Easy to catch waves. Handled the mushburgers well. Liked it but maybe a litttle tippy for my taste.

PSH 9'6" Wide Ripper. Light and stable. Easy to paddle. Excellent up and down the face but very slow in the mush. If I only surfed good surf I'd buy one.

Naish 9'5" Mana. A tad heavy. The most stable board I stood on all day (and possibly ever). Surfed well on the mush. If I needed a board in a hurry I'd probably buy one. A bit too heavy to tempt me away from my Starboard at the moment. If it was bit lighter it would probably be my new board.

PSH 9'6" Wide AA. Light enough and stable enough. Good allround board. (This board has one of those foot platform deck pads that I hate. But I was able to get used to it and it was a pretty nice board.) I'm told the newer version is considerably lighter so this one might be a goer for me.

McTavish 9'6". Heavy. A bit of a brick. It's not a bad board but I didn't find much to like about it. Quite stable. The pointy (but fat) nose pushes through waves easily on the way out. It felt super slow on the waves. (This is not really fair to the board. It has four fins and I was stuffed and the surf had dropped off so it might not have been set up properly for the conditions.)

I reckon I'll take a set of weight scales to the next demo day,

the mac9'6" felt similar in weight to the PSH boards to me?maybe I'm way off[}:)]

Thanks for the pics DJ,I took a total of zero pics.

Thanks for the reviews Camo. Excellent info. Am I right in thinking you have a surfshapes and a DC 9'4? If so, how did the McT compare to those boards and how does the DC compare to the Surfshapes.

Cheers

I rekon you're about right there Cammo. IMO the new Bonga 10'er felt a bit lighter than the McT which felt pretty heavy, much the same as similar sized PSH's.

I'd like to thanks everyone on behalf of SUP Vic and SHQ for coming down and supporting the day. We had an amazing turnout with over 30 people demoing boards and some new SUP Vic members signing up. The weather was perfect, waves could have been a bit bigger but with size comes the crowds so we did alright.

BP, go the Naish 9'6, you're right the McT is one chunky board especially in the tail section, reminiscent of the outdated Uber Fish. My son Kayne tried it out and was not impressed.

Hope to receive the DC 9'4" this week, can't wait,
the Mct just felt like a user friendly handle everything an intermediate level sup'r
would throw at it and be stoked, yet to surf it in big waves though,
the surfshapes is more refined performance, more rocker less weight, handles steeper
waves well, but
the poor old surfshapes took a overhead and a half closeout set wave lip on the deck last week,
causing a crease along the bottom from rail to rail, still waiting to see if it can
be repaired, keep this hush hush as I havn't had the courage yet to break the
news to Phill

Thanks Camo,

I'm actually keener on the 9.0 than the 9.6 but it's a bit hard to get a demo up here at the moment. I have a DC 9.8 on demo this weekend, hence my question.

Na it couldn't have been that little dog. This one was left by a pretty big sized dog and it was at least a day old. On closer inspection it had a toughened skin about 2mm thick meaning it could be a few days old but the temperature test indicated warmth which I have found is a dead giveaway for a reasonably fresh laid cable.

Sorry Camo for my negative comments on the McT but they were coming from someone fairly new to SUPing who found the McT to be not as user friendly for an inexperienced SUPer. That's why I directed it at BP as he did ask my opinion via pm.

How was that! I can't remember who was near me at the time but they almost scared me off my board. Must have been 3 or 4 metres from mine and the other guys boards. They then proceeded to follow Rich (session) out into the line-up. First there was one, then two then three just cruising at snails pace! Such a good day!
