I last regularly surfed 20 years ago. At the time I weighed 94kg. Now I am 120kg.
That quick spring up at the takeoff is long gone. With Sup I am allready standing up and on the wave sooner and travelling faster then if I was on a SB. I also enjoy the stand up paddling over prone on a SB. Also standing up gives you a better view of out the back as well as all around. I should be talking future tense as I have'nt got back in the surf yet (2 mths away as need to buy yet another board). I am pumped to get back out there.
Just spent 2 weeks in Fiji on my 14ft Sup paddling everyday.
At 40 Sup is great exercise for me and enjoyable.

Doggie that 7.8 was no longboard mate, but a good introduction for a shortboarder.Sh-t hot little trip that one

Funny thing is the KING on fins and all good things Lacey and I would go head to head on shortboards back in the late 70's early 80's.
Lacey wasn't too bad on his backhand at the D way back then.It was a blast to catch up with him some 25 years later and even better to see an old friend still frothing.
Now that's what its all about, surf whatever craft, respect, enjoy

Fair enough, but, since you have been a shortboarder what part of SUP is more fun than SB? I mean the gear is way more expensive and is harder to use in the surf.
I guess you can use them when there is no surf and thats a plus. The vid that AKS put up not long ago where he was looking at sharks and rays on a flat day, i enjoyed that vid and thats something that you couldnt do on a SB or LB.

Ive been reading with intrest a thread in the windsurfing forum about the popularity and decline of the sport and alot of posts sugest that kids just cant afford the kit to get started unless their olds are into it as well.

Well for me the main thing that makes it more fun is the fact that performance is better in less than perfect waves. And by performance I don't mean tighter turns, rather more speed and power in gutless waves. More fun in big stuff also as easier to get into = catch more waves.

Other reasons: catch more waves in a shorter session, get more exercise, can escape crowds quite easily by sacrificing quality and paddling a ways. I love competing and the crew is very friendly.....hell I could go on.

It is unbelievable for fitness, I am fitter now than I was 10 years ago.....will stop now, starting to sound like a SUP salesman

PS, regarding expense, I was into (and still am) Mtn Bikes and SUP is cheap compared to that - or snowboarding!

I'm with you on this one goatie, I've had a shot at SB, LB, BB, SLS, Mt biking and the list goes on. I don't think price is the barrier stopping young people from entering the sport whether that be windsurfing or whatever, it has more to do with promoting it to the kids. The big three surf manufacturers are good at this and thats why the kids are mainly into surfing more. If SUP, BB, WS or whatever sport wants to get the youth into the sport its about promotion and development, it has nothing to do with price otherwise the most expensive watersport on the coast wouldn't have its massive nipper base.

By the way, I wasn't putting crap on anyone when i posted this topic, it was all about a bit of fun and hey I'll admit, I'm on here heaps because I like the info layed out on this forum. I was just seeing if Laurie might buy into the gaming concept

what is the opportunity cost of racking up thousands of posts ?

its time spent being productive that you will never get back

time that you could be involved being involved in a community of some sort , be it a charity (yes - lots of people actually do this) , sports , hobbies that develop some sort of a skill set and provide a real sense of achievement.
- in short - all the things that create real happiness in life.

I am starting to suspect that excessive use of facebook (its simply social wheelspinning with no real benefit to anyone except facebook themselves) , forums , world of warcraft etc etc has a much higher cost on the fabric of society than most people realise

for those of you with thousands of posts on here - you should listen to that tiny little voice inside your head that is telling you that you might have a problem ...

My name is Chris and I am an addict.

(Hi Chris)

My confession is that while I am involved heavily with clubs, social and industry groups I have over 1800 Seabreeze posts.

I would like to confess that most of my posts are made from an Iphone while sitting on the can, sitting waiting for my daughter at school or sitting through an episode of the worst show in TV history: Teen Mum.

Please help me while I try to irradicate this spiradic checking of and posting to Seabreeze and use these 5 minute windows of nothing to be put to better use. I guess I could just relax?
