Or should I say.. Dots.. and I put them on there.

I've added some carbon fiber bling and now I can add a cargo net or bungee stuff to my board.

I just wiped where I was going to stick them with some turps on a cloth.. Marked where I wanted them.. and stuck them down with some epoxy.

I've lifted the board into the air pulling on them and they've not come off so the bond must be pretty strong.

He makes a larger size that would be good for fitting a handle or leash attaching point (leash plug).. He makes this stuff for the America's cup racing yachts.

Well if you can lift up an America's Cup yacht with one of them, they must be pretty strong.

never use turps. it leaves a oil residue.
Always use metho or isopropyl alcohol.

They are about the same price as the plastic Ez Plugs.. or maybe a few dollars more.

America's Cup teams make their own. Pretty simple... C plate, a hole saw and some 4mm to 5mm core rope. Depending on price, the stick-it tie points are a simple answer, otherwise, make your own.
They are used to hold pretty high loads on AC cats. For example 100kg + weight inside the bow that experiences high forces when the yachts turned and also when they stuffed the bows in from the foil (47 knots to about 10 knots deceleration)

Hey supanimal,

I suggest giving the area you will be sticking the Stic-it composite soft pad eye a light sand with 60-120grit sand paper and then cleaning with Acetone or a similar alcohol before applying a glue.

DJ only cleaned his board with turps and stuck them on with an epoxy glue. This is perfectly fine for most applications, but to achieve the highest load carrying abilities of my product I suggest giving the board a light sand as mentioned above.

Cheers

Turps is fine but you are right about the residue. You just need to go over the spot with
household Spray n Wipe to get rid of the residue. I find turps works best if you need to
remove glue left from old deck pads, stickers etc.

DJ,

I'd be putting that can of Coke in the back pack rather than relying on one strap.

Just to add to what DJ has already posted,

I make a 25mm pad eye, a 25mm ultra low profile (ULP) pad eye (like the ones on DJ's board) and a larger 40mm pad eye. All loop lengths are customisable upon request. The larger the size of disc the larger the load capabilites are. 25mm ULP are what I usually suggest for a foredeck lashing as well as a go pro teather. I'd suggest a larger 40mm disc for a leash plug replacement or similar.

I also make a removable race handle using the larger 40mm disc. The handle is screwed into the disc using a stainless steel bolt. The handle will be easily removed and all you will be left with is a round carbon disc with a 4-5mm wide hole in the top. The bolt only goes into the disc, so there would be no holes at all in your board.

Cheers

Hi,

They are strong, but not quite strong enough to lift an AC boat! Depending on the glues that they are stuck down with and to what substrate it is stuck to both small and large pad eyes are capable of lifting more than 100kg.

This is very true. Acetone or a similar alcohol is what should be used to clean the surfaces.

At the moment Im only selling via direct contact. I have some local SA shops that will be stocking them in the new year as well.

The set of 4 25mm ULP soft pad eyes are set at a cost of $72 as an introductory offer.

2 25mm ULP soft pad eyes are $45
1 25mm ULP soft pad eye is $25

As a part of the pack of pad eyes, you also get application stickers. These help you to sand neat circles on your board as well to keep glue mess down to a minimum when glueing.

Hi,

As LordRumpunc said all AC teams make there own soft pad eyes. I have worked for several AC teams as well as other high end yacht racing teams including TP52's, Volvo Ocean Race boats etc. The usual way is to as LordRumpunc says cut discs from carbon plate and use a strong rope loop through the middle. The point of difference between this way of building a pad eye and mine is that I build mine in a mould. This allows me to build them with a low profile tapered finish. I also use a high quality UV stable resin, which means they won't yellow in the sun like most epoxy resins on the market.

Cheers

Looks like it would be really easy to wind the screws in too far and unwittingly punch an hole through into your foam anyway?

Yes.. .. That's why it would be very important to trim the screws to exactly the right length or use washers to prevent that happening.
