At SHQ today I checked out this new blood red Hull Ripper... It looked awesome.

Inside it was hard to get a good pic that showed the beautiful gloss finish.. almost hotrod paint job.. so I took the board outside and away from the reflection of the lights inside the shop and took these shots.. I took more pics showing more of the bottom shape and pics comparing it to the Hull Paddler.. but these pics give you an idea of what Blane's new shapes are like.. Very different.

Here's the rest of my pics.. btw.. This is a 9'11" and it's a demo board at SHQ.. I'm hoping to take it for a surf today.. These pics show the bottom shape and how it compares to the Hull Paddler (the blue board in the pics).

Interesting choice of back drop. Is there some sort of sub conscious commentary going on here?

Here's a few pictures from today.

DJ

I left my 9.0 Hokua on the roof of the car and used my 10' Mana so I could compare the two boards.. Both are about 10' long and 32" wide.. The PSH is only 1" shorter.

Almost the same dimensions but very, very different boards.. I started paddling my Mana and Rod paddled the Hull Ripper.. It was a long paddle to the break that we were going to surf.. My Mana is solid as a rock paddling and when I swapped to the Hull Ripper I thought jeez.. It's tippy.. The thin rails on the HR are almost like a stepped rail and when tipped want to keep tipping very unlike the Mana that wants to float you back.. The first wave that I caught was not that big and once it fattened up before started to reform I moved forward on the board to keep the board gliding like I do on my Mana and the board cruised along ok but felt pretty slow.. Slower than my Mana.. I'm thinking it's not only tippy but it's slow.. I wanted my Mana back.

The next wave that I caught was much bigger.. I was able to get back on the board and it turned beautifully and was fast.. Faster than my Mana.. It held a rail well as the wave started to close out.. I turned to straighten up and caught a rail and fell.. I'm thinking I would not have fallen then on my Mana.. I caught a few more waves on the HR and was starting to get used to how it works.. I missed a few good waves because I couldn't get it around in time.. The thin rails towards the nose seemed to catch as I did wide paddle strokes or back paddled to get the board around like I do on my Mana.. I'm guessing sink tail turns are a must on this board.. I'm not a very good surfer and don't paddle wave boards very often.

I stayed on the PSH for the rest of the session.. I nose dived a few times on waves that my Mana would not have.. even with that Persian slipper nose.. I'm sure it's a technique thing and something you would get used to.. Paddling all the way back was also harder than paddling my Mana.. The Mana is easy.. Cruise'er.. and very forgiving.. and also paddles flat water better.. But the I think the Hull Ripper surfed better and was faster on the face of the wave once you get back on the board.. We only had waist high waves.. I'm sure if the waves got bigger the PSH would be even better.

DJ,

Could the Ripper had been too small for you?
Considering the comments grabbed from the other Ripper thread.......

AA, the US distributor website is saying to go 3 inches longer than you normally ride. I've also been told 6 inches longer. What have you heard?

Any inside scoop if they will be making them shorter than 8'9?

CB1, broadly there will be 3 types of riders who look at these boards-

1. Guys who surf regularly that can surf a 'fence post' and will tell you that these boards are as stable as there flat bottom counterparts.

2. Average weekly-warrior (pidgion holing myself here) who gets out once a week if they are lucky and errs on comfort and stability. At this stage I would say go up a size to what you use on a flat bottomed board.

3. Crew who's expectations are probably beyond their ability and should prob stick with the larger Wide Rippers - 9'2 9'11 10'6

I can pretty much say this without actually trying them, that the 9'11HullR will not be as stable for the average rider as the 9'11 XWRipper.

I can also say that you would not regret going up in size with these new designs but you could well regret going too short.

There are more HR's both shorter and longer in the pipe but no ETA as yet.

Yes.. maybe for my ability.. and weight.. and for those conditions the 10'6" might have been the better board for me.. But I don't think it would take long to get used to.

This one is defiantly lighter.. I think no more than 3000 kilos.. .. kidding..

It's about the same weight as my Mana.. maybe lighter.

Ripper style boards are much less forgiving than the cruiser styled mana. The rewards are in better surf where you can dig the rail in and really carve with confidence.

Thin rails and narrow tail and nose are, as mentioned above, Ferrari like not station wagon like.

so different than what landed in europe: bamboo veneer, so what construction have theses ones?

Same just painted to be a little different. Team graphics I think.

Guys the very first HR samples to go out in the US and Europe were Bamboo Veneer and look like the current Progressive series.

We are the first to receive the actual production models with the team graphic.
They are Bamboo Veneer construction with painted finish. High gloss red or White.

The weights of these boards are impressive.

They come with a black grip which can be swapped for Snow cammo.

I saw one in the flesh yesterday and they look unreal. I am not surprised by DJ's comparision - they are two completely diff boards. One has boxy rails with a large tail area whilst the new HR is very thin through the tail area and the rails are a lot thinner. As Hilly alerted to they will be unreal out in the surf with these features. I think they look unreal. Would love to have enough pennies to get myself one NOW!

i had a very quick surf on one at the noosa sup expo couple weeks back.

paddled in windy conditions....was very stable i thought...being 32 wide and i normally surf a 29 wide.

caught a couple of waves and noticed how smooth it could turn...and kept thinking about these rounded rails and round hull underneath....

i wondered why they have made this unusual design and the boards are really inexpensive i think 1200 with a paddle??

so both these things made me wonder what is the board best for? is it just a cheap entrance board they have come up with ? a crossover type board with a funny hull? But it surfed so well..and im not the best surfer but working on it .

then i saw this vid today....now i think i want one it is something special in my opinion. i want to demo it again soon.

Maybe you demo'd a Hull Paddler not the Ripper. I had a ride on one today and I can definitely say they are different. It was pretty stable (it was a 9'6 Hull Ripper) although I am used to a 9'. It has a sort of 2 stage tip. It tips but then catches and goes no further. Bit disconcerting at first but I'm sure you'd get used to it. As far as surf goes we didn't have very good waves but I feel they are going to be good but with a bit of a learning curve. You have to get right back on the tail to turn it effectively. Two big pluses I noticed were it pops over whitewater real easy and has the best glide. you could catch anything on this. Hopefully Towny will offer his thoughts coz he ripped on it today.I'm reserving judgement I need another go in better waves.
Thanks to Ross at Jungle Surf and AA for letting us demo these boards.

maybe so i looked on the psh web site after posting this and could only see the paddler...? bit confusing ? i would have thought a " paddler " was a downwind board? but not at 9 off feet odd ?

anyways the hull design is what makes these boards unusual

would love to hear what the real diff ?
