Could never get sick of surfing no way..other wise the last 25 or so years have been a big waste.
Yer I go through periods when I have a few bad surfs be it due to conditions, crowds, winter, injuries or what ever, but hey thats life and for me it could be worse.
I could be stuck in some crappy town hours away from the ocean working some crappy job and spending my spare time hunched over the bonnet of some s#!tty car, telling my hommies its gonna be the ducks guts when I "fix her up" drinking what ever I can get my hands on all day every day, yelling at my missus and kids and BSing to my mates about how some hot piece of tail down at my local took a fancy to me, and I had to sort her out after I gave the boyfriend a bit of what for.
STUFF THAT.

Couldn't get over surfing no way.
To everyone that does find themselves having a crap surf from time to time, I recommend going over the falls ( on purpose ) it will remind you why you took such a bloody awsome sport/hobbie in the first place.

Hate to bring this topic up again especially on a friday night. Yet I'm struggling and finding it harder to honestly look my mates in the eye and talk to them about this. The blokes laugh it off. The girlies dramatize it or dunno how to respond. Hence online help (anonymity at it's best). Has been a while that I have felt l'm dragging this massive weight across my shoulders. Going through the motions up by 5, mountain loads of work dragged home working endless through the night.

To add to that juggling familial responsibilities and expectations chucked onto a bloke trying to live his OWN life while guys my age are out partying, travelling and living. The insurance claims, household bills, problems I've been dealing with this stuff since I was able to walk and speak english (migrant family, you'd think I'd get use to it by now). Had to grow up young when looking after the family was left to me.

Now I feel as if everyone's moving on in life and I'm stuck behind. Just going through the motions. I'm writing this as my mates get pissed and ready to hit the town. I'm too drained; notes and data piled on me desk waiting to me finished.

Guess I'm posting here because where surfing use to be my solitude to get away from it all, even offshore, 3m swell tomorrow isn't getting me up and going no more. I look at my boards and where once my heart raced at the thought of good waves down south, I just look away now. Yeah I know, some of you may give me the 'harden up' talk as you normally do but this is different. It doesn't feel like the one where next time you'll charge down that big wave or get yourself up after being knocked out by a surfboard, I can deal with that easily. But this, it's almost as if you have this shadow following your every footsteps; when you go to bed and as it greets you in the morning.

Anyone ever been to this place? How'd you sort things out?

Don't think too much or for too long about the "hard shiz" buddy - you have your arms & legs (don't you?) and you're not Kooped up in a hospital or worse .... take each and every day as it comes .... each one will bring it's own challenge or stoke , whatever.
Use the time in the blue stuff to escape the human dramas , everyone has them things at some point - its a human thing , we're fallible mate.
try not to drag ya chin , and if all else fails - go over there and take a teaspoon of cement .... nah it's sweet mate , shiz happens in life
.
Go speak to your quack he'll point you to a skypilot who will then make you wish you'd never done that - go enjoy yourself - you!

Pup

Edit: PS - you do realise you're in for a flogging dontcha

Mate maybe subconsciously it's the flogging I'm after to get me going again. Picked meself up after gran past away last year but it's been a struggle. Each time I'm getting meself up and running, something just hammers me down. Wondering where weiry is with that picture of cement.

Good you mention my courageous big hearted mate Weiry , maybe he'll tell you what he's just battled and is coming through the other side of matey ....
I know what loss is like too btw , my old girl got that hospital superbug VRE in 2002 I still get the nightmares of what she looked like at the end , big reason why I came back to LB'ing mate , the folks in here have been good too - they're a bit of a crutch for this fella (now I'm up for a flogging hahahaha) currently I have another sick parent nearing the end of life's cobblestones , big big job looking after that as we speak/type...
it'll be okay , as one cloud hovers another clears .... find the inner self and whatcha want out of things mate , go laugh at yourself or something else - it passes

Hey newguy, its easy for someone else to say ( your mates ) pull your ****** head in mate but many of us are or have been though sh-t in life, its a real challenge at times.
Many of us have dealt with losing a loved one as you mentioned, its not easy niether however you need to focus on the things that are important in your life, this help you you switch off from today's pressures. As Dude said there's nothing better than going surfing with a couple of good mates and talk crap for an hour afterwards in the carpark it all helps.Your a young uni student I believe and study your ar-se off mate because all being well this degree will set your path for life.

Newguy remember your not the only one in a rut atm many many Australians are,no I'm not going to give you the HTFU crap because that would be a cheap shot.Sounds like you have done the right thing in life for the family from an early age you should be proud of that mate, you may also need a holiday,if your able plan a surfing holiday somewhere that is not going to blow your budget and focus on achieving this, this will give you something to focus on and keep the fire burning.

Love Uncle Mac

Like Mac and Bulldog said mate we have all been through it . We lost everything in the floods a few years ago . Hard to beleive now but I still tear up when I think about it .
You need an escape from the pressure cooker for me it is going surfing . When I surf there are no phones , nobody in my ear , and I switch off from all the crap . The missus recognizes that and when I get pissed she sends me on my way off to the beach . ( taken me years to train her well ) Maybe for you you need a different escape such as your footy . Easier said then done but you need to find an escape somewhere.

Wow, you know newguy when I started this post I was in much the same headspace as you. Felt like the clouds over my head. It's hard for others to understand sometimes but when pressure leads to stress, stress leads to overworking to try to get back on top thinking that it will escape the stress.

For me all of that leads to eating crap, not exercising or looking after myself. Then I go surf and fail miserably. Being my release also that kind o compounds the issue.

Best advice I can give you is to take a few deep breaths, try your hardest at everything and feel content in that what you gave is your best. No matter what you achieve, if you do your best it's enough. That always makes me relax, thinking that way. Then focus on your health and make sure no matter what you do take some time to seperate your mind. Exercise is the key, a surf or even a run or swim does wonders for the mind.

I'm with you mate. Thanks for your honesty and chin up mate. Don't take long term solutions to short term problems.

Jeepers some heavy stuff in here this morning. Thinking of ya newguy. We all go through tough times as others have said. I do not profess to have all or any pf the answers but this works for me. When I am feeling down I just try to think of how lucky I have it living in this lovely country and all that goes with it. Sometimes its hard as you think that the world is against you and everyone else seems to have it better....but do not fair. We are living in the top 5% of all who walk this planet and I find that I do not have to look too far to find someone less fortunate than myself and then I can start to appreciate once more how good I have got it and get back to feeling positive and on track. In these moments I also tend to spend some time helping those less fortunate as I realise how lucky I have it. This further helps the recovery process I find.

There is some great advice in this thread. I have enjoyed reading through it once more. I think that Mac has a great idea - set yourself an achievable goal that will inspire you and interest you. Then head for it. When you have knocked that one off set yourself another....then another etc and soon you will be pulling into some big pits at g-land!!!

Heavy stuff.
Sorry to hear your Blues Newguy.
As Ted said, I think they say you are in the Top 5% if you have food in the fridge, money in your wallet, a roof over your head, etc...

My "Value Adding" advice... We all need to learn to say "No". Sometimes when there is too much work to do, you need to push back and say "No".

I am rarely asked to work weekends... Not much gets under my skin, but just the very thought of working at weekends gets under my skin, and the question, "can you work this weekend?"... well it makes my blood instantly boil. IT MAKES ME INSTANTLY IRATE !!

Thankfully though, I keep a "poker face", and instantly reply with, "sorry, I have a few things booked and paid, and we're actually going away for the weekend to ......". Even though I would blatantly LIE about it, there was NO GUILT on my end! I would also happily get about town, not caring if "the boss" spotted me. Who cares? 1:3000 chance of the boss running into you, especially if he is in the office!! . In those days, you would have had to kick and scream for over-time pay, plus I didn't have any equity in the business, so there was almost zero point working on the weekends for "perfectionists"!

* I have gone through a period of working 2 jobs, working 7 days a week, but I was happy just raking the cash in at that point, plus my weekend shifts were 1pm-9pm working at a cruisey Petrol Station near the coast, as a Driveway Attendant, 75% female clientele (some in bikinis in Summer), as we were the last Driveway Service joint for miles around. So I could surf in the morning, and still go out on the town for a few hours on Saturday Night. Plus a few mates would drop into the servo for a chat... So in an 8 hour shift, I probably did about 4 hours work !!

Jesus that Vid Prawnhead is amazing. Makes you think long and hard. It drags out and it looks so hard for the guy and then at the 5 min mark when he gets his first wave, then finishes by describing his feelings, crap i need to compose myself because that is was fantastic. Life changing almost

Life will always get in the way, its being a adult but the biggest and best thing to do is don't compare yourself. In everyone's life there are ups and downs, there are time when you fly out front and other times you lag behind. You just need to find a way to keep it up.

For me it is my kids and surfing. I love it so much and honestly i'm really not that good. In fact yesterday got my arse handed to me just trying to get out the back only to eventually catch a wave in to call it a day. But for me i just liked getting wet. I do find it good to focus on the positives but you cant always so for those moments i have a goal or mantra i repeat. Lots of different ones but many help.

My latest is when paddling like stink and getting no where i ask myself how would Bethany Hamilton do it Then i just dig and get the job done. If i cant i don't completely beat myself up.

Newguy just think it could be alot worse. You could a be a washed Sup-ér

Sorry i do find laughter the second best method of getting it done
