Hi All,

I am new to surfing and will be taking the board out when the weather warms up on the Gold Coast (September?). I am looking for some advice if anyone can offer any... stuff like.

- How to read the weather reports on Seabreeze and what to look for so the conditions are good but not too huge when we get there?
- Which spots to go to learn as a beginner where we won't be getting in the way?
- Which are the good surfing schools?

Any help or advice appreciated.

Hi and a huge welcome mateI use coastalwatch and swellnet for surf reports, both have a web cam so you can see whats going on which is good before you decide where your surfing.
Greenmount is a great stop to learn and there are a couple of surf schools there, walk on water is one.
Try and get a one on one listen if you can.
PM me next time your on the gold coast I'd be happy to help you out anytime or look for the QLD topic in the forum and you will catch a whole bunch of the guy's.
Oh you are talking longboarding

Thanks mate that's great. I really appreciate the advice.

Yeah I own a Warren Cornish (Byron Bay) Long board. I will take your advice and look up Walk on Water. I reckon a couple of lessons and then get in to it... I have spent too long watching from the beach or the surf club!

Is there a certain wave height to avoid? I heard the wind and tide also affects the shape of the waves? I have been boating a lot but I have no idea on the conditions to look for for good surfing. I guess the opposite to boating? Flat water not good!

Mate SE wind for Greenmount I'd like to see you catching white water first for catching the unbroken waves or 1 foot unbroken waves to start off with.

Once you get the basics sorted I would recommend using the bouys and wind recordings to sort you out. This means you can be there well before the crowds have viewed their on line cameras and surf reports.

This is the first thing I view upon waking

the second is the wind

www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN60901/IDN60901.95770.shtml

Keep an eye on the beaches that you frequent and work out what works at each location. You need to work out the difference that a longer period swell makes, the swell direction, tide and wind combo's. Find similar websites for the Goldie - someone on here can probably post them for ya.

It may seem like a lot but after a few false drives to the beach and jamming a few good ones you will start to work it out. Best of luck and just remember a few of the golden rules that make everyones time in the water more enjoyable - wear a leg rope, do not drop in and when paddling out make sure you head for the whitewater to give way to the person already surfing the wave. But most of all have fun!!! Good luck and keep us posted with your progress. If someone on here is offering to take you for a surf you are half way there.

In my opinion take a 45min drive to Byron Bay and have a lesson at Black Dog surf school. You will get better and more fun instruction and much gentler and safer conditions.

All going great mate. the mutt is living the life of luxury with the Goddard family in Coffs Harbour and just loving it. Work is limiting my surf hours at the moment and the lack of daylight hours is certainly making it difficult to get a lot of time on the water. However what surf I am getting is really really nice and the local crew are a pretty nice bunch of guys and have been very welcoming - however we'lll see how nice they are after they get their arrses whipped in the comp' next weekend

Oh - the other stuff is going fantastic too and no regrets at all with the move south - very very happy old grommy

As you know Bill the good thing with the daylight hours down here is what we lose in winter we more than make up for in summer with twilight evenings and daylight saving , cant wait for summer to come around .
How did you go down there last week I hear it was a bit fresh in Hobart with the wind blowing off the snow .

Funny you should mention that because it hasnt been all that cold here. Last wednesday I left here at 8am ish with snow on the mountain and ice everywhere and drove to Launnie. When I got there at about 10 it was still minus degrees !!!! It was one very scary drive up the middle with patches of highway completely white with frost/ice except fot he tracks of the cars I was following - very scary indeed. My GF lives in Launnie and they are getting nights of minus 5 and its only about zero here - go figure hey, and they dont have snow in their back yard like I literally do have here at home. Where we surf out at Carlton it's definately noticiably warmer than in town and there have been days that Ive left home with serious doubts about getting in the water and have actually found the water and air temp at carlton quite bearable. Im sure it will change, but so far I haven't been at all cold in the surf other than chilly toes.
