I guess it's hard to read sarcasm on the Internet. I have nothing against Saffas but as Mac will agree there are a lot of 2 minute noodles on the Gold Coast that move from Sydney, NZ or wherever and start claiming local status and being big mouths. It gets a little irritating.

I remember reading in a mag once. The definition of a local on the Gold Coast was 'anyone that has been here 2 minutes longer than you'. I don't consider myself local and I went to both primary and high school here but hey I was born in Vicco so I'm no local.

Silly attitudes like blanket hate of something or anything is partly why I only ride my shortboards now when the conditions really suit them, other than that I ride whatever means I can have the most fun that day. It usually is about the least crowd for me. There are so many turkeys and the crowds so bad at times it's hard to join the chaos just because of some unwritten definition of what box I should be in.

Take me somewhere with good waves and I honestly can't imagine riding anything else but a shorty though.

Cool to hate sups?

I don't think it's cool to hate anyone, hating won't achieve much.

Sup does look pretty lame though, I reckon kayak's are the go if anyone's that way inclined. Just stay away from the breaks I'm surfing please.

Can't say I've seen anyone surf one well apart from the pros.

Let's hope boogie boarding takes off in popularity again, at least they're nice and soft if you hit one[}:)]

I can see many uses for sups. None of em involve waves but.

Yesterday was hot, so I went down the river with flattie fishing in mind. Ended up on a mussel mission but only had a bucket. The BIG mussels I found were quite a swim, so swam out with the bucket, but hard to dive down leave bucket on surface come back up with mussels without losing some ( a lot ) Still had a feed of fresh mussels and flatties

If I had of had a sup? possibilities endless for rivers estuaries and creeks etc etc. Saw a few young (FIT) looking guys paddle past, looked like a pretty nice way to spend the day I thought, better than sitting at home getting fat on no swell days. You could even stop somewhere for lunch and a coupla beers?

Mind you, you could do it in a tinnie, but that would be lazy and you would end up fat hey Suba

I agree with keeping them out of the surf away from the line out though!!

The problem is though that they all sit so close to each other and it makes for a much bigger target to miss.. Sometimes trying to teach these kids etiquette of not sitting on the inside of people all the time gets a little frustrating

Yeah, you see guys that say that on the SUP forum. Then they say it's been years since they got on a SB. You end up with abominations like this:

Makes me cry. Or dogman, who had a couple of really good SB vids but no more (although he's one of my favourite SUPers due to his proper body mechanics).

I hate the heavy reliance on the paddle and how people can't turn their board without it. It must be possible, because you see people doing bottom turns so the boards obviously can turn off the rail. But I almost never see top turns - they just kind of hit the lip and let gravity do the rest. There's no rotation off the top. The cutbacks suck - those flat, lay-on-the-paddle things. The loss of balance sucks - sit on the paddle all the time, forehand and backhand (like those guys at Newport Wedge).

I worry about people like OG SUPs daughter. So many bad habits developing. There was that recent pic with her with the stiff front leg, heel planted/toes in the air, body rotated the complete wrong way, laying on her paddle. It would do her good to lose the paddle for a while and develop some board riding skills, not pivot-round-a-pole skills.

^^ OG has been getting Kristy onto a SB for training so he must have thought the same.
I think with some cross training she will iron out the bumps in her style, with I could say the same

Mate, I just shaped myself new a 6'8 single fin cruiser. Not long ago got an EPS 5'10 Fish that I don't like too much, an EPS 6'0 Carbon wrap stringerless before that, my favourite board of all time is a 6'2. I ride my shorties quite a lot. Have a bunch more than this as well. My Simon 6'5 RP that I watched him actually handshape for me is an old brown favourite that I like to ride in good waves.

This morning I rode an pro's ex board HP 9'1 Mal after training on a 14' Race SUP. Yesterday I went for an hour paddle on a clubbie racing paddle board.

I also own a surf ski and an OC1. I paddle with a 6 man club. Not to sound conceited but I'd say I'm pretty open to anything that floats. Never ridden a goat boat or body board though, i'd be embarrassed

I'm in the water everyday before 5:30am, are you? I just don't get people being narrow minded about what they ride as if it defines them as a person. "Oh, I'm a shortboarder", really? who really cares? You are not what you ride, you're who you are.

Looked like young Tommy was having a ball and a good workout, those waves weren't worth surfing on anything else but a sup, so what is the problem?

Hit the nail on the head mate!

To me its all about having fun, who gives a toss what board someone rides and how well they do it. I ride shortboards 70% of the time but when its small, fat or mushy I have dragged out mals, foamies (coolites) and now SUP's and have had just as much fun on all of them. Do you reckon TC would have normally taken his shortboard out in that mush in the above vid, probably not so he takes a SUP out and has a hoot. Why deride him for getting out there and having fun.

It looked slow and cumbersome for TC but id did look like a hell of a workout

Makes me wonder how I'll look just starting out if guns like TC look that slow. I understand its a big board and all but it's TC. He was my idol growing up. I just assumed blokes like that would still through a SUP around like a rag doll.

What jb said. How's the big slow-mo at 1:00 . This is the guy who defined power surfing with "The Snap", struggling to pull a floater.

The clip is just another answer why I'm not partial to SUP. The equipment hamstrings you and turns you into an insta-kook. These days there are plenty of modern shapes tailor made for small junky surf like that. Not 150L battleships.

I concede it might be fun to give it a shot. But to take it up at the expense of performance boards makes no sense to me at all.

Funny to see the SUP riders all come in to the SB forum and back each other up .

Only one of those things is possibly true.

Light? 8.6kg - 4 times a shortboard.
Low volume? 140L - 4 times a voluminous shortboard.
Good performance? Compared to a 30' boat, maybe.
Very stable? Maybe, I wouldn't know. I'd expect so with those measurements though.

You're deluding yourselves.

Actually that vid i think has helped me decide what type of SUP i know do actually want. One for paddling flat water and a bit of fitness. No real need to surf with it

I like a few spots of the vid when you get to see the old TC stance. I i think it was about 2 min in and he is one for planted out front and the back foot well back with a v shape formed by his legs as he is just running down the line

Actually i need to watch some of his old vid's from the day. Could be all the inspiration i need to get wet this weekend.

The Funny bit is how angry it makes you. You have gone to great extents over time with photo essays etc to prove your point, they are amusing. Cracks me up.

Also mate, I don't need backup I'm sure I could do a pretty good job of stirring you up alone....

The even funnier bit is that you are probably time poor in reality and when you get a chance to get to the ocean you have to be on your shortboard to try and prove to yourself that one day you will ride a wave in a way you really know you can.. It's your identitity, 'I am Legion, short..... boarder' Hahah.

So I play my persona well then . I type almost as fast as I can speak. It's no big deal - procrastination from work. I reckon you could type 'tom carroll "the snap"' and get a google result in less than 30s too.

AND a club wooda decided to shut that peak down and have a comp on it until the CLUBBIES decided to put the Flags Up

Welcome to weekend Perth

ps probably exaggerated the sponge numbers more like 300 because 70 - 80 of the little bstards would be just inside the impact zone floating like driftwood and not even realizing how sharp SB fins n noses are!!!!

Ah the weekend approaches and its gonna be hot hot hot and even a hint of swell

TRIPLE THOSE NUMBERS

rant over I will also be out there so triple those numbers and + 1

Problem is that the kook ratio out in the water is probably 75% at any given time. IF you class SUP riders as kooks then all well and good you should be happy. Dont know why all the complaining then. Would much rather surf with a heap of kooks than like here sometimes on the Goldy when its chockers full of pros.

Thing is Dazza, on the Goldy if you want you can go anywhere for a good uncrowded surf. I was over in Feb and had some great uncrowded surf, even at Greenmount. If thats an excuse to ride a SUP well it isnt a good one imo, get a mal...
