Actually got to try the gear last night
as it turns out! Jesper was at the local
so he let me have a whirl.
Although I had to contend with about 70 twilight yachts steaming past and super gusty 20 plus knots it was great fun.
I found the foil and board combo super stable and very slow.
I was amazed at how slow you could go and still remain in flight mode the
wings have awesome lift.
When I say slow I am comparing to the starboard race set.
I actually think the speed of the slingshot is a very good thing I can see it should match ocean swell speeds perfectly and Also allow for cranking turns that won't spit you off.

If you want to learn to foil it's a very
good option and one that means you don't have to upgrade to anything else after you have mastered it unlike taking the race gear route.
Looking forward to grabbing another go when the conditions are better

Yep, tryed to match JJ a couple times down and upwind, no chance on a slalom board??Personally I think JJ has captured the essence of what foiling is all about, cruising the big blue and not restricted of where you can go apart from depth. Hats off to the man but don't tell him that??

Cheers for the comments Boz, you should give foiling another go - one run on the river doesn't cut it dude

Snides - glad you got to have a go on the Slingshot. I think you summed up the differences between freeride and race foils well in your post.
Similar to the difference between wave and slalom boards - both have their own purpose.
When it's blowing 25 knots at Dutchies with a big sea running, cranking upwind at 20 knots with the Time Code wing is plenty fast enough - our priority is having fun downwinding - carving turns flying down 2m windswells and living to tell the tale

I did use the Slingshot Hover Glide with 76wing + 90 mast on a old Starboard Formula board here in the start.
Also in lighter breeze (down to 8-10 kts), - with a 7.8 / 8.6
It worked perfectly fine ( I'm however quite used to formula boards and the outboard positions of straps, from my racing time on those years back).

What I noticed after getting the 2019 Slingshot Wizard boards is following. I use the 125L
This is just to compare the Formula vs the more specific Foil board.

- The Wizard is actually easier to get up and going (takes less effort to get up on the foil)
- Wizard feels like it is having less force on the foil ( less wide and straps more in board), compared to the formula board.
- Wizard works with smaller sails (5.9 or 6.5 is the biggest I use and take me down to 8-10 kts). I'm 83kg
- Wizard feels safer as the straps is more inboard and also the front strap has less angle (compared to a normal windsurf board), so a lot less chance to be caught with you foot in the front strap if you should crash.
- Wizard is a lot more reactive ( shorter length) and have a nice flat deck that helps to control the board.

The only advantage on the formula board was the upwind angle was a little better.
But saying that you will still go really high into the wind on the Wizards with very little effort, even on wave sails.

I enjoyed the time I had on the Formula + the Hover Glide set up, but can easily say that the Wizard is another 'step up' on the fun factor scale :)
