Just wondering (and procrastinating) are there attitudes at your local beach?

I am involved with many sports and some of them the people are inviting to the new or less experienced people. The 'experts' talk openly and make them feel welcome and encourage those who are not 'experts'. I have been windsurfing for a number of years now and I feel that windsurfing is DEFINETELY not one of those sports.

Had a sail last night where I actually went home feeling quite bad because of trying to start a conversation with a number of blokes separately and being shunned. I know this is a little pathetic and I enjoy windsurfing for the sailing rather than talking BS with people on the beach but having some kind of camaraderie would make the afternoon better. Im not asking for in depth discussions of aerofoil mechanics but a few pleasantries about the conditions would be nice...

Is this just me being a unapproachable ****er?
Does this happen at other beaches?
Should I bring my own bunch of mates to talk with while not sailing?
Im I not good enough to talk to the blokes doing loops and I should avert my eyes whenever they approach?

probably not a good idea wearing a G-string while striking up a conversation with a stranger on the beach!

I would have thought most windsurfers would be very friendly as lonely old men are probably be keen to bond with other lonely old men. As for expert windsurfing advice, there is none, just people who have been doing it for a long while and are still confused about it.

It's not his fault really.
I think it's because mild mannered mKelly wears glasses so when he takes them off and becomes Super Red5, he can do amazing things,.... but he can't see what he's doing,. Not even to type up a post.
So there are bound to be a few typos and grammatical errors.

So why are our women and junior windsurfers as friendly as the old guys??

The average age of sailors in Windsurfer One Design regattas in NSW is about 32 years.......younger than the kiters I see around. Oh, and 2/3rds of them sail with someone from their family as well as with their friends.....fertile lot, those windsurfers.

And anyway, what is wrong with a sport that's so great that people do it 'till their old and grey?

We are a fertile bunch. I sail most of the time with a stiffy.

I've found all windsurfers are easy to talk to. I don't particularly enjoy talking to non-windsurfers, because they never talk about windsurfing!

QLD windsurfers are kind of stingy about offering a ride to someone in need, though... even if they have a huge empty van all to themselves...

That is exactly what upsets the kiters - nothing can be cool to a juvenile mind if its done by someone older than 25 (and more so if many of the "oldies" are generally better than the younger ones - can't relate to skill and experience - please note not talking about myself in this - my WS still s#cks).
