I was looking at a secondhand 2005 VW T5, 2.5TDi with automatic transmission - does that sound like a dodgy proposition??
Think it's done about 100 000km's...

I wouldn't go there without a warranty. Had a few customers with different major problems all happening around 75,000. I'd be happier with an auto than a manual though if that's makes you feel better.

All i can say is

BUY A HIACE!! So reliable its not funny.

Heres the toss-ups tho,

Aussie delivered ones - made for commercial applications, so not very comfy not very quiet and pretty ugly.

Jap import ones ( Super Custom and SuperGL ( I have a SuperGL)) - very nice and comfy to drive, look allot better, lots of nice " things " inside like electric everything 4x4 factory tint ( which is 20% - illegal here) climate control etc

But theres just one small problem, And its a big one!
PARTS!! Damn those parts to hell!

Busted my diffmount being stupid on the beach ( its 4x4 with a 3.0LT diesel.)
cant get one in aus. had to make a new one myself ( im a mechanic) cost - $200
Still a problem.

I had a bingle in the carpark the other day and broke my indicator lens and my parklight lens - none in australia gotta come from japan takes 3 weeks and will cost around $400.

other then that i love it to bits ( not the individual bits tho! )

Go the Hiace!

oh , the difference between a SuperCustom and a SuperGL is

SuperCustom - hiace chassis with tarago like interior but they are very very plush top of the wazza in luxury toyota vans usually auto with turbo diesels etc very nice , kinda ugly.

SuperGL - Hiace chassis and body, different fittings like lights and everything basicly its a regular hiace but its the top of the line one. Sometimes called a 200series hiace.
not so plush inside but still very nice

yup . got a hilux. pretty bulletproof.. but have to agree with above comment, they are a bit noisy and not super comfy, but they are things that could probably be improved if you're keen enough.

but thats not why i bothered logging on.... i just wanted to say..WHAT THE 'KEN'ELL.... 10 TO 12K TO FIX AN AUTO

That really does prove that some of the euro cars are over engineered pieces of crap, and the fact that a dealer did a near 10k repair for $0 when they didnt have to (other than out of pure guilt) also shows that either the mark up on the repair is a little extreme, or they're making a killing out of you on the sales of the cars in the first place.

yeah they might drive nice but not enough to warrant buying one if that could happen.

My 2 cents

Ahhh that feels better, i really cant wait untill i've finished packing... moved house, knocked out a wall, built the walk in robes (for the better half and all her cra...shi............. clothes and other nice things), then maybe the wind will blow again for just one day at least and i might be able to go for a FREAKIN SAIL.

ahhhh.. thats better

Maverick, can you post a pic or 2 of your Hiace? You've got me curious.
