Got me thinking about elastic deformation - vibration dampening - comfort - endurance (old knees). I notice road bicycles have
moved away from super skinny tyres toward wider profiles with better shock absorption, with the argument that the increased friction is outweighed by the decreased vibration fatigue and subsequent improved endurance of the rider. (no clue if this true or marketing). It will be interesting to see how you feel after a longer sesh. Does increased comfort correlate with noticeably increased drag at cruising speeds?
The wider tyres have better rolling resistance
or alternatively, better or equivalent rolling resistance and comfort; and as the road surface becomes more irregular an increased margin of safety to flats, punctures, etc. Was on a week long road tour last week, we were all on 30-32s*. It would have been a horror show 15 years ago due to the rough roads when 23-25s that were the norm and many road bikes couldn't fit anything larger.

Back on topic, I so desperately wanted something like this when I used to sail a Formula board at a renowned shallow flatwater spot. Even with a normal weedie, I'd have to walk out 200 m or more to get water deep enough to sail at times. But it was still better than being on the beach waiting for more wind. Love to see what the clever and creative minds on this forum come up with.
