I would love to see properly tuned gear from 1990, 95, 2000, etc. Be interesting to know when it peaked. I'm using a late 90s wave sails in 4.2 and 4.7, loving them. Can't say they're any slower, certainly way better built!

Are they really better built? Im usimg Simmer, off the back of using KA and i cannot fault either brands construction.

In the 90's i used north. Cant fault their build.

However there was a time in the 90's where some brands race sails were built super light and wouldnt last. In 2000's going to formula events and seeing bins loaded full of broken masts.

As far as sails, masts and booms are concerned it is brand specific as to build quality.

Design on the other hand. Id rather current gear than 90's gear. Significant developmemt occurred.

I really don't think a long and narrow board "feels good" when going downwind in chop and swell. Or, as the video points out, when trying to jibe in overpowered conditions. ..

If you go to either extreme of being long and narrow (Raceboard) vs short and wide (Formula) for "feels good" down wind the long and narrow feels soooooooooooo much better. My heart rate would be probably 30% less on a RB powered up down wind vs being on a Formula in the same conditions.

No idea, but I doubt I would take either in anything more than 15 knots. A modern raceboard is a boat: 68 cm wide by 377 long by 280 liters ...

You are just confusing the waters, too much chop! We are taking about slalom boards. 90s vs current designs.

They are apples and oranges but you want to compare Formula boards with Race Boards open another thread ...

To be fair i didn't say the fox was the pinnacle of all round boards.

I said the fox proves wrong the idea that longer boards ride more comfortable. The fox has been praised widely as being a game changer in that regard.

He sailed on his own, a lot of Dutch spots are really flat so not a good measure of how good the board is.

He was 7th fastest out of 21 that day. Ignoring Hans Kreisel's vastly superior speeds as he is one of the worlds top speed sailors, the Fox was 2 knots down on the 2nd fastest.

I'd say the Fox is quick, not as fast as a slalom board but still quick.

That's my point, I don't think the videos show that at all. The Fox proves you can make a short fat board more comfortable by adding V to the bottom shape. But there is no free lunch, you also get a reduction in speed as a result, if that wasn't true then all slalom racing boards would have adopted it immediately.

where she is is talking about how controllable the board is and a guy on a slalom board goes past her like she is standing still? Karo is a good sailor, one of the fastest women in the world on a speed board, so I would expect her to be going a bit quicker than this.

I appreciate that the board is great in chop and comfortable to sail, and that makes it a great intermediate or high wind board. But your contention was about long boards not being as comfortable as short boards, and I don't see that the Fox is a relevant data point in that argument. Its comfort and control come from its bottom shape, not from its length or width

Severne Fox is pretty fast in real world conditions. Saw this post a couple of weeks ago.

"My wife and I went up for a week in Avon NC. We had two windy days followed by 2 light days. Followed by 3 windy days. In the video, gusts were into the mid 30s. Sustained winds of 28-30. The high wind slalom races from the day before were called when gusts were approaching 45mph. We did three heats of light wind races and three of high wind races. One discard for each participant and one was recalled after we all finished for all due to chaos (most sailors - me not included! - followed someone around the wrong mark). I started the high wind racing with a 7.3m. I quickly dropped to a 6.2 for race 1. A 5.4 for race 2. A 4.8 for race 3. I got 2nd place for men's open.

...I rode the 105 for the high wind races. It was amazing. I was consistently in the front to the first mark. For two of the races, I was second to the first and second marks. I have never gone that fast in 30mph winds before. No joke, I was the fastest person in the water when we were goofing off on Saturday morning (when the video was shot). I broke 30mph in 2-3 foot chop numerous times without really trying."

I have a love hate relationship with my super fragile F2 Silber,something , ( I think it's German ) ,slalom, 82 , wide .
Its light and fast on all points of sail , but when it gets choppy it's all over the place like a mad woman's sh.t .
Its like Its going to grab and crash , pitching all angles , but it doesn't. Going into a bumpy gybe is scary , it wants to get air . I know , I'm not committed enough .
I can see someone with skills showing who's boss and winning races on it , just not me
When it gets gnarly , I prefer my double concave V board .
Kinda like the Fox only heavier. Uglier , and probably not as good . Similar vibe ?
