how is it that QLD can be warm , sunny, friendly, windy, fun ,flog NSW in the footy all at the same time . it is true there are only two states to be in QLD or pissed i want to sail and kite at shear water , i want $2 pints and most of all i to be warm . W.A winter is as boring as watching cricket and AFL at the same time

How bad was the game? I swear those Blues were on the take that match, they were told "Hey we need to sell lots of seats to the third match so make sure the canetoads win." Funny, Roy and HG didn't pick up on it.

Still a couple of stars on Windguru so it should be good. Makes a pleasant change from those WA guys crowing about how they were overpowered on a 3.0 all week. I'll be at Shearwater by lunchtime, got a big party Fri night, nothing beats falling into the water as a hangover cure...

Got a new boom, and a new technique for that verdammten rig flip when gybing! Been freeze-framing as many gybe videos as I can get my hands on, and discovered a different series of hand grabs on one of them. Last Sunday I actually did that series by mistake, and thought that it was "bad technique" despite making the gybe. However I found exactly that series of moves in one of the videos I've got, so now it's 'legal' .
Might finally stop counting up how many beers I owe Tony now

I'm gonna make it, gonna make it, gonna make it

Neb, you can use these no wind days to practice your rig flips. Just go rig up attach to a sturdy board and flip away.

Hey MkSeven,

I've practiced rig flips on dry land till I'm blue in the face, can flip in my backyard using all the recommended methods, however when I need to balance on a board as well everything goes pear shaped as I pass through the wind on the turn. It's difficult to simulate a gybe on dry land as the wind shifts direction and strength radically on the water while your feet stay still, impossible to do without some form of turntable underneath you on dry land.

I figure the easier the rig flip, the more chance I have of getting the board attitude right and staying upright, hence the new method. I need the "rig flips for dummies" series of moves, all those flashy spin-it-in-the-air ideas are totally impossible for this little black duck!
Ah well see how it goes on the weekend eh?

hi nebbian,

i used to teach tafe classes on windsurfing with a one design tied to a turntable....

i found them to be really limited because the board would turn very fast when the sail was moved.

once in the water the real world comparison was way off. the board takes much longer to turn due to friction of rails, fin, centreboard etc.

oh yeah,

QUEENSLAND FOR PM>>>>>>>>>
go the maroons.....

if you can design something that has takes into account the drag then it would work a treat.

Actually neb i find flipping a rig on land is actually heavier than it is on the water (more effort required), if you find you are struggling then your timing is wrong.

I think maybe it might not be your rig flip which is wrong, able to gybe without the rig flip- sail out clew first then flip (thats essentially what racers do at crowded gybe marks). The fact that you mention rig then board attitude kinda indicates that you are not going in with enough speed and/or not getting your footwork right.

Pat and I will be probably be heading down the coast late next week if you are up for a sail.

Hey mkseven,

Guaranteed my timing is wrong, as is my footwork, and the rig flip, and not enough speed on entry, and not enough mast foot pressure, and not oversheeting properly, and the list goes on...

I can make it around and sail out clew first most times, but in strong wind there's no way I can flip the rig when sailing out on a reach. The sail just has way too much pull. Hence trying to flip it at the 'right' time.

If you're coming down during the week then I'd love to meet up and get you to tear my technique to pieces, I'll try anything at the moment to stay upright in those gybes!

Sounds like you have more info tucked away than most of us. I reckon sail into the gybe as fast as you can and don't think so much. If you're going pretty fast there won't be so much pressure on the sail when you flip, ie if you slow down and then flip you get the full force of the wind.
Now all I have to do is put this into practice myself...
