Bloody hell, you blokes are making my head spin, I only have a BIC techno with a NP 6.7 Diablo, a 6.1 expression and 5.6 search.

So I was keen to follow recommendations from the original. But looking at this data I need about three boards, big for under 15 knots (like the one I have now)a mid when it goes over 15 knots a small when its blowing like a bastard, and some more sails, up to 8.5 or bigger, means another mast other than 4.3 and 4.6 I already have. My misses is gunna kill me!!!
Oh an I am a 5'9" (1.75m) ol fulla at 87kgs, but my misses is still gunna belt me when I put this proposal to her. I will just say “but the guns reckon I need this stuff”

What would be an ideal setup for 12knot planning for a lightweight (65kg)? (Besides formula gear )

Surfboard! In 10 foot waves and 12 knots offshore. Ideal to get on the plane ... and into the barrell

I dunno, I reckon you can get a bit carried away with all the gear sometimes.

I was out last night, about 12-14 knots (might be being a bit generous) on a bic blast (74cm wide) with a 6.2 North convertigo (old, and the largest sail I currently own) I'm 100kg and I was planing 90-95% of the time.

wouldn't mind a 7.5 but worry about how many times I will actually use it.

Speaking of the North convertigo, it comes with a cam thingo, but being a "convertigo" can also be used as a RAF sail.
I've only ever used it as a RAF coz I cant work out how the cam is supposed to be fit.
Has anyone else ever used one of these sails and knows how the cam is supposed to be fitted, I'm keen to give it a try.

My experience with windsurfing suggests that people tend to over-estimate windstrenghts when it's windy and under-estimate when it's light. I measured the wind in mandurah on my wind gauge at 4pm, and I was getting gusts in the 15's, (range 6.8 to 15.8) in a sheltered area. Safety Bay would have been more than 12-14 more like 10/12 to 15/17, is my best geuss.

Grumps I reckon you'd get good value out of something in the 8 range, whether it be 7.5, 7.8, 8.0, 8.2, 8.5??

Being and old North it is probably a CAM system similar to the old Ezzy's (pre 06/05) as David Ezzy was once a designer for them.
Have a look at the two links I have added.
If it is the same,
One link will show you how to convert back and forth, the other on how to rig.
Converting:
http://www.ezzy.com/2006/sails/pdfs/2004/infinity_nocam_rigging_2004.pdf
Rigging:
www.ezzy.com/2006/sails/pdfs/2002/Infinity%20NEW%20cam2.pdf

It's my best guess, but as I have seen old norths with similar CAMS i think it may work.

Cheers

I don't get it. In this thread, but also many others, there seem to be two types of people. Those that sail 8.5, and then change down to 7.5 when it's 20+, and those who sail 5.8, and change to 4.7 when it's 20+. Someone please explain?

P.S. Would a formula board rigged with a small sail be suitable for teaching beginners?

When you look like this and do this to brand new gear you need an 8.5 to get going in light winds

Check it:

harrow, it's called leverage, the further outboard you are (such as on a 1m formula board) the more leverage you can apply and therefore larger sail you can use. Small sails usually don't work on formula boards, one problem being the large fin and flat hull shape, Starboard Go is much better suited.

thanks guys, it's been a while since I sailed so the 32 should be fine as plaining wasn't an issue in the past... at least I can get powered up when the wind kicks in and still not get to powered up in the back strap.

Harrow,

The size of formula boards makes them excellent to learn on - but.... there are a couple of drawbacks:
- the deck is not designed to have masts crash into them, and/or the deck doesn't like harness-hook's plunged into them.
- the fins used in formula boards are (generally speaking) the single most expensive piece of kit, given their size -> having a beginner smash the fin into an underwater rock, is no fun.

7.4 on my Styrotech Slalom (70cm wide, 290 long, 130lit) planes in 10kts without pumping, and I am 80kgs.I love the board, so comfortable, so enjoyable, sailed from Brissy to Strattie with it, sailed from Brissy to Moreton with it. Its my baby for upto 15kts.

I also have a hypersonic 105 which is NOT an easy board to ride though I use my 5 to 10m sails on it. You always have to work on it and I have yet to find a comfortable stance where I can sail with no hands on the board, lean back and fly. Maybe its just me. My conclusion to date: it's not a board to enjoy windsurfing with. Bring it out when you are racing only.

Exocet.... hmm. No comments rofl.

My Fanatic Falcon 111, with 7.5m V8, adjustable outhaul and a couple of fins works from 12 to 25 knots, now thats a great range. I've owned formula boards in the past but I feel that the extra gear, rigging and transport hassles isn't worth the extra couple of knots of earlier planning,

I was very impressed with the Tabous. Tested the entire range last year when they did a demo in Brissy after the Tabou event. Is that the gateway to forwards Haircut ;) Your freestyle tricks scored top marks at the last WW meet ;) You should teach us at the next one ;)
