OK lets try another tack.
What if we hit the schools say 7th grade and up with some cool and radical wave/freestyle videos, shown in sport time.
Would this attract some attention to the sport?
Then you need to follow up with an introduction program of demo's and lessons etc, discount rates for schools maybe.
A mid week excursion from school to watch a bit of wave/freestyle would be cool and exciting surely, some of the local hotshots could donate some time.
Any better ideas?
Have we got any teachers out there to imput some thoughts.

Both Paul and Timmaaee, are on the right track i think, and following on from Simon's great insights. Very good ideas all of them Wife's a teacher will ask her what's possible

Just some other ideas, do we in the windsurfing community have any advertising people or people in WA tourism, or connections to these industries. If so we could consult them

An idea from left field, what about using govt funding somehow to attract aboriginal youth to the sport, as away of getting them away from trouble, might get some media coverage imagine their incredible athleticism applied to windurfing I know this one's radical, but I would be prepared to do some ground work as have some contacts.

WWA should firstly rename to Windsports WA, team up with Wind shops and hit up Mr Gallop for funding to distribute a definitive guide of locations (with sponsorship from accom etc ) to main regions of interest designed specifically for overseas visitors.

(DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE "BEACH THAT SHALL REMAIN UN-NAMED" OFF THIS LIST)

Rough ideas of how much terrorists are worth to economy will rattle their cages. (remembering that 56.3% of statistics are made up on the spot!)

WHEN YOU SPEAK TO MR GALLOP, PLEASE REMIND THE PR#CK HE STILL OWES BUNBURY AN ARTIFICIAL REEF!!!!

Great bloody idea hard man !

was kiting in gerro and some of the original locals were real keen to have a shot on the kite. Getting some of these crew into kiting and windsurfing would be a super positive move from so many different angles - for sure we'd have a world champ in 10 years if we could harness these guys hell talent. Imagine the freestyle windsurf moves they could pull . There must be a budget somewhere for this kind of positive action. AFL Footy has a great program and works well in this regard - why not some other sports too ?

pain don't hurt !

my point is:
Have you ever tried to surf on a tiny board first off, or tried to cut a bit of would with a crap saw, etc etc,
If you dont start people on the right track, with the right gear they actually get put off the sport?

Also have you noticed that every tv show for some reason is doing specials on kite surfing. With Channel 10 on board surely we could create a tv show, Windsurfing in WA, which could follow the racing scene a bit. on 30 minutes a week, surely the more people they can help get into the sport, the more value/return they get from the sponsership.

I dont think gear availibility is the problem. Its more the fact that we need to get the fathers to encourage their children into windsurfing,. eg father son lessons etc.

enough for now.

If any of you on this thread want to see what is acheivable in one short season , come down to Safety bay and meet Matthew G. 7 years old, ripping on a 60 l wave board and a 2.7m Mirco slide. Only started last September. I would love to take some credit for all this, but can not as he has not had any lessons with me. What he does have is a very supportive father, who will bring him down on any opportunity and sail with him. So to all the sailors out there(you too John G.) get your kids out on the water on decent kit(small light rigs like the mirco slide)and have some fun.
Do not give them your old crap. It is the easiest way to put them off the sport. Next time they ask for yet another playstation game, computor etc put it into their windsurf fund instead. It will be the best purchase you ever made.Your kids will think you are legend for ever!!!!

p.s to John Grulich,
When is your son going to take up his lesson you won at the Safety bay marathon.

THERE ARE SOME REALLY FANTASTIC SUGGESTIONS HERE GUYS.
YOUTH TRAINING AND INCENTIVES HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED AT SOME LENGTH AT WWA MEETINGS THIS YEAR AND IT'S DEFINATELY A TOP PRIORITY FOR NEXT YEAR. ALSO SUGGESTED WAS THAT OUR "TOP" GUYS HELP YOU OUT MORE. I'M SURE THAT GUYS LIKE ROBBIE RADIS, CHRIS LOCKWOOD, STEVE STRATFOLD AND JESPER ORTH HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH HELPING YOU OUT ON THE BEACH...YOU'VE GOT NOTHING TO LOSE BY ASKING. WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO BUILD UP THE SOCIAL CALENDER AND RECREATIONAL SERIES BUT UNFORTUNATELY OUR COMMITTEE ONLY CONSISTS OF ABOUT 5 VERY DEDICATED PEOPLE SO OUR OPTIONS ARE LIMITED. WE CAN ONLY BE IN ONE PLACE AT A TIME. THE BEST WAY TO INCREASE THE FOCUS ON RECREATIONAL SAILING IN WWA IS TO HAVE RECREATIONAL SAILORS INVOLVED IN THE COMMITTEE OR AS MEMBERS. WE TRY TO FOCUS ON WHAT THE MAJORITY OF OUR MEMBERS WANT. NEXT SEASON WE ARE LOOKING AT DOING MORE PERTH EVENTS AND PERHAPS A WINTER SERIES. WE JUST NEED A FEW PEOPLE TO RAISE THEIR HANDS AND VOLUNTEER TO GIVE UP 1 OR 2 HOURS OF THEIR TIME. IT'S A COMMON MISCONCEPTION THAT IF YOU VOLUNTEER TO HELP WWA OUT YOU WILL GET ROPED INTO DOING HOURS AND HOURS OF WORK. THIS IS IN NO WAY TRUE. WE WELCOME ANY OFFERS OF HELP, NO MATTER HOW INSIGNIFICANT THEY MAY SEEM. MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK. WE ARE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO HELP OUT WITH GETTING THE SOCIAL SCENE UP AND RUNNING-BBQ'S, FUN SAILING DAYS ETC. UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE QUITE A FULL CALENDER AND SUMMER IS ONLY SO LONG SO WE DO HAVE TO RUN SOME EVENTS DURING EXAMS, BUT IT IS DEFINATELY SOMETHING THAT WE WILL TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN ORGANISING THE CALENDER. IF YOU EVER HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE WWA OR IF YOU EVER WANT TO HELP OUT IN ANY WAY PLEASE CONTACT US VIA OUR WEBSITE.

CHEERS!

This is a post from WWA Forum, hopefully someone has an old board to help this young up and coming sailor

Author: Michael Oliver (---.nv.iinet.net.au)mailto:[email protected]

Hey i'm 14 years old and am looking for a waveboard under $200. If possible it would be great if it was under 9kg. I dont care how old as long as it is reasonably light and works. Board must come with a fin.

Thank you.

Have a local sailor who teaches at our local high school. He has organised a windsurfing club with the kids who come down to Safety Bay after school for windsurfing lessons. We have about 30 on the books so far, and after three lessons i am getting bombarded with requests to buy equipment. If any of the shops or forum readers have old boards and small sails going cheap let me know.

Hi from geraldton,

Yes also here in gerro we have found that there are not many children or young adults taking up windsurfing. However during our latest meeting (GWC) we came up with two good ideas.

1. Kids who most likely take up watersports are those who are confortable with water, waves and so on. A group who you could approach and we have approached in Geraldton are the Volenteer Rescue Cadett Services. In matter of fact we have done a swap where they help us with the safety side of the Geraldton Blast Competition and we give them free windsurf and kite lessons. Next lesson next week in Dongara!!!(Sat 27 March) by me. Our commitee has given the dumbs up to giving lessons on a regular basis so everybody of the commitee has a go in giving lessions.

2. We have asked Tim from the G-spot to give us a quote for a whole new starting kit, because the above mentioned kids are so keen to go sailing. The cash to fund this kit is partly comming from the Cadetts Service, partly from the Club and hopefully partly from the sponsors. As the Geraldton Windsurf Club partly owns the storage room at the Geraldton Volenteer Sea Rescue, we decided to use this room to store the new kit. In this way kids can bike to Point Moore with one of their friends and use the windsurf kit.

We will see how it goes in the new season, I love to see some young guns on the water kicking butt. And Stone's son is a start (But he also still has a long way to go) Want to keep informed of wat is happening in Gerro? log on on www.geraldtonwindsurfclub.com

Ps: And for those young guns who reacted on this subject and are keen to race. Yes we are looking at organising the Blast on a date that does not clashes with your exames. So no excuse this time, ask a lift from John Gulich or Steve Stratfold and get over here!!!

What about the idea of adopting/mentoring young windsurf enthusiasts

Older experienced windsurfers, with lot's of equipment such as myself, could be offered as a buddy/mentor for a younger enthusiast.

I know myself that there seem to be a lot of guys in their 20's who have gotten into the sport (eg Greenroom, Cliffo, McFly etc..) who have limited resources, and equipment that's holding them back.

My idea would be to adopt one of these guy's share my equipment, ideas, and teach skills, and could also pass down or on, equipment that is not worth selling on second hand market but could help one of these young blokes out, helping them to progress to next stage.

As they get more keen (Not possible for the likes of Cliffo and Greenie) and get more resources they'll spend money in the shop's and go on windsurfing holidays etc?

I'm going to voluntarily do this and adopt Greenroom if he's willing? How about a mentor for Cliffo? and a mentor for McFly?

I hope the wind blows soon. This thread has gone a little off course from the original "What do you want from the WWA". I think you guy's need a sail!
For my 2 cents worth, a race to Rotto and a Super-X comp.
Have a good one

G'day guys
Interesting thread. Good to see the WWA hunting for suggestions.
I've read comments on imroved posting of results from comps and agree.
Disappointing to outlay a fair amount of money and time to find no results of events entered.
The Safety Bay Marathon is an example of what can be achieved. Good stuff.
Many of us will never be top contenders but it is always good to see your results, who you beat etc.
Hard to improve on your results if you don't know what they are.
Like many sports, it's the average joe that makes events possible with numbers. If there's no results, the enthusiasm may be somewhat reduced.

Be good to see more informal racing events, throughout the year, like the mid week Melville Beach and Matilda Bay slaloms we had a few years ago.
Good fun.
Maybe more Figure 8 races, like Safety Bay. Only 2 marks required, which could be channel markers etc (on the river) so no need for a boat to set a course.
Certainly more local events (Perth - Safety Bay) would be great.

I liked the idea of getting tv coverage of events. I know it's a very difficult ask, especially of commercial tv, but what about Access 31?
The WWA could try for a regular spot, especially in season, to promote and cover events and happenings.

Cheers

I'm with WestOzWind - a Race to Rotto would be awesome.

Commercial TV would be near impossible, but Access 31 has all sorts of local sport - even a Surfing program in Summer and I'm sure we could get some airplay there for local Windsurfing events.

i didn't read every post in this thread but most of them.. and now i am slightly sleepy.. but besides that..

what gets kids excited, and just about everyone actually. is action packed stuff. and explosions. so if your talking about a TV show, then i don't think racing would be the best thing to show (for the entire 30min) i think wave sailing and big airs, and big stacks, and fast freestyle moves. play on the whole extreem thing.

also have you (the WWA or who ever) thought about making some poster say with someone doing a big table top or a frame by frame loop and just printing out a bunch go around town and put them up. of course with some words to say what it is..

also when you are out sailing. always try to do cool ****, i don't even think you have to be good. i'm not good and when i sail i try to do new things, every now and the you will pull off something really cool and maybe someone watching will go yeah thats cool i want to be able to do that..

also cause it seems that a lot of people are more concerned with the gear they use then sailing. when you are talking to n00bs that have crap gear don't tell them how crap there stuff is.. be supportive of how **** there gear is. but offer advice on how to select good equipment and where to get best prices and what to look out for

I LIKE WATER

I havn't read every post in this topic so not sure if its already been brought up??? but:

What about an Esperance wave comp? I understand there used to be one a few years ago, with the Esperance Ocean Classic. What happened to this event. I would certainly be excitied to see the re-introduction of a comp way down there .

On the other hand; great to see the Nationals are coming, and a possible Margrets comp aswell .
