"But dam its expensive and it’s not easy at all"
The sport always was difficult, but it was even more difficult on the old 80s planks, when it was so popular. So my guess is that easiness cannot be a factor for the current slide.
Cost cannot be the reason either: new planks in Australia used to sell for $1000 of then-money, yet selling like hot cakes then.
Sport being expensive: different sailors spend differently, plus there are cheap 2-3yo boards. Money spent is more like a choice, no?
Of course you're right that our sport is inherently difficult (first gybes, then fancier ones, take years). But that was always the case.
And then echunda wrote...
"I’ve found it very difficult to find anyone who gives a **** people entering the sport (...) shops have only been interested in selling you expensive gear (...) they’re always trying to sell gear that is not required for a beginner on a limited budget."
My experience too. The current crop does not spend time teaching other people. And shops are only interested in selling multiple gear (or worse, to kiters).
I tried 5-6 shops (yank country mind you) playing a newbie, and all the same: "kiting is the in thing now" and "you need multiple gear to perform". I wonder why newbies find the sport expensive if they're sold upfront 2 boards and 4 sails which they won't be able to master for a long time...
And then gee, like Gestalt totally went...
"still sail OD, Formula, small board big board whatever board. it's all windsurfing and fun"
There ya go mate! Chuck in freestyle and social sailing too!
Plus the
positive side to all this: all those people leaving the sport gives me inexpensive 1-2yo gear in amazingly good condition !
