January 1995, invited my new red-hot flatmate to come and get some shots of me windsurfing with her expensive camera. Arrived at Safety Bay, Rockingham (WA) to find a howling Sou' Wester - perfect conditions. Rigged and hit the water. Sailed out, then gybed and began absolutely HAMMERING at the beach, directly at flatmate with expensive camera. Released front hand and patted the water while hanging out on the harness. Really belting along - going GREAT! Beach getting close... time to gybe, but if I gybe I'll spray the camera! Okay, better tack... but that has the same problem!!! .... time ticking away.... oh ****, too late to do anything!
[CRASH!].... Houston, we seem to have collided with land.
Flatmate has lept clear as the mad-man crashes into the beach, still strapped-in, still harnessed-in. Board stops in an instant, while sailor and sail demonstrate inertia. Sail rotates around and smacks the board of a beginner on her way into the water. Sailor's feet ripped from foot-straps, breaking a toe. Sailor ends up tangled-up under sail, bewildered as to how still alive!
Cost of dinged learner board... zero (very gracious owner)
Cost of broken toe.... free repair (thanks mother nature)
Cost of damaged gear.... nothing broken (thanks guardian angel)
Cost of damaged pride.... PRICELESS!

Going back to 1986, and it was a wednesday which meant the arvo spent doing organised activities (year 12). A teacher and a few of us were into windsurfing, so that was our activity. This day I was feeling a bit crook with a cold, so decided to not go out - there wasn't much wind anyway. It was very low tide at Hawley - down in the corner for those that know it - and after everyone rigged up the teacher, instead of parking his (old rusty ) Kingswood wagon up the beach a bit, told me to just move it up as the tide came in. Cool, no sweat. They sailed off around the point, I relaxed, until a seabreeze kicked in!! I had to go out then! I rigged up quickly, and sailed off around the point to catch up with the others. After a long while the teacher sailed near and said something along the lines of "you did move my car up the beach, didn't you?". Oh ****e, sailed back and it was submerged to above the level of the floor inside. I saw some heavy machinery nearby doing roadworks or something, and went and explained the situation to the backhoe operator - he drove his machine down and towed the car out. Was I a tad embarrassed or what?

Gold - pure pure gold -
I renounce all my windsurfing ills after this gem
Easty - love to hear how the teacher reacted and most importantly how long the kingswood kept going for after its little swim

The teacher was really cool about it (mid 80's, bushy bearded surf and nature lovin' type ) - and as I said it was already a tad rusty. I helped him pull everything apart that got wet and wash it all. I saw him driving it around for years afterwards. They don't make cars like that these days!

I agree. It's a great photo.
Just don't tell anyone what happened afterwards and they'll just think you are as cool as!
