Well I just hafta jump in now. Pity I haven't logged on for a while I'd love to have replied to some of the posts above
Find a shop you like and stick with it. I have gone to the same shop for near on 15 years now..... SOS. Yes I think they are the best etc etc, and they stock the gear I use, however a big part is the fact that when you go to any shop and spend money every few months... you are building a friendship and relationship with the staff. They then know exactly what you use and like. I can ring John and say "I want a down the line waveboard that will work for me" or "will I like the 2006 RRD 92L wave?" and I will get spot on exactly what I want every time. And a good friendly chat at the same time.
That is much more valuable than saving $50 on a board by running all over town.
As a contrast, I went to another shop a couple of years ago as I needed a 90-95L down the line (full-on) waveboard. and I needed it right then and there, for $800 - $900, to get me out of trouble because my old one busted. (I had to buy second hand risght then as a new board was coming that I ordered a while back but I needed a board to fill in the 3 week gap and seabreezes were imminent!)
Anyway I told the guy there (who has a
great deal of windsurf experience) exactly what I said above..... a down the line board, nothing else. As he had nothing in stock second hand of my description, he tried to sell me a freeride!!!! Apparently he had ridden the board and it was pretty turney and was OK down the line.
I tried to mention to him that a slightly wiggly line as one travels along a waist high wave is one thing, but there is no way this 100L freeride board would stay in the pocket on a mast high peeling monster nor would it be able to project anywhere near as vertical up the face and so on. Strewth imagine making the drop.... anyways, maybe a good one for a first time wavesailor at Dutchies but certainly not a DTL board. Then he rolls the eyes and implies I know nothing.
See getting advice is one thing, but when a long time wavesailor walks in with a specific request and they try to sell him something different just to make a buck, that is wrong. Advice, YES. Telling everyone you know best in an arrogant manner, NO.
It is even more pertinent to me living in the country. I can ring SOS and ask for a mast, or fin, or board as I've just busted one... I'll have it in 12 hours.
I wonder what the hell I'd get if I rang the latter shop and said I need a 21cm sideshore wave fin sent asap, here is my VISA number.
Maybe a 50cm Deboichet carbon Formula fin with a note attached saying "these turn OK too, there is corners in Formula racing so should go OK"
