Silverback - not sure where things were going, hence the lack of a response. So, where do i shop and why, you might ask? hmmmmm
Best customer service by a country mile ...........Surf Sail - Leederfille, why? Because they will ring you about quieries and quotes, and when your equipment on consignment is sold, and when they can get something. Mark has the best customer/business sense in perth, hence my vote. Nonetheless, i've tried his products and they don't entirely agree with me, consequently, i shop due to equipment, at 2nd wind and WSP. I shop mostly at these two establishments because they both have the best range on the floor of any shop in perth. If you want it, it normally will be there. 2nd has the best second hand range, and WsP has good stock levels. I personally balk when i have to order and generally these two establishments spend the money and it pays off.

I know what i need (finally) and have realised no one else in perth does; they come close. I would buy the following products if i hadn't suffered poor service or that feeling i wouldn't get that back up if things went wrong (warranty). They are: Gaastra, Fanatic, Naish sails. Generally, i feel that the Proprietors have us by the short and curlies. We do not have a choice. Consequently, the service at times is very poor, as mentioned earlier. If you want it, here is the only place you'll get it.

This is about it.
I wrote the orignal post as i work everyday dealing customers who spend 99cents, or which i make nothing. I have to treat them generally all the same hoping that they will come back and spend 5 dollars of which i might get 40cents. As someone said before the customer is not always right, but you do need for both parties to feel happy with an outcome so they'll come back. Unfortunatley, this is where most of the sailing shops differ........in my opinion

Good point Shuee.
To a certain point people must learn what gear suits them.
Unfortunately we can only point you in the right direction, and you guys/girls must trust our judgement, but also tell us if what we recommended works or doesnt work so we can make adjustments to our recommendations.

Also my point of most of my replies to this topic is as shuee posted

" As someone said before the customer is not always right, but you do need for both parties to feel happy with an outcome so they'll come back. Unfortunatley, this is where most of the sailing shops differ........in my opinion"

YOU MUST COMUNICATE WHEN YOU ARE HAPPY AND SAD TO US. WHEN I WAS SAD WHEN I SPENT $1200 ON A SAIL AND MAST WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PERFECT FOR ME I WAS STRAIGHT IN THE SHOP TELLING THEM I DIDNT LIKE IT. HOWEVER THE FOLLOW UP SERVICE WAS NOT TRUELY TO THE STANDARD I WANTED SO I HAVE DECIDED NOT TO BUY THAT BRAND AGAIN. NOT TO SAY THAT ITS IS A GOOD BRAND IN THE FUTURE, MORE THAT FACT I DONT EARN THAT MUCH MONEY TO RISK ON SOMETHING THAT MAY NOT WORK.

REMEMBER COMUNICATE WITH US.

There you go Chad, you went marching in, Guns blazing, and still didn't get
what you thought was service, so what did you do in the end
voted with your feet.

Obviously if you think something is physically not right you go back and
get it corrected. But if you don't think you've been "treated" correctly
you probably go somewhere else next time.

true but i let the shop know about the problem and let them try to rectify it before giving up on them.

I didnt have great experience in buying in NSW.

I bought some gear last year from G spot in Geraldton. I had good contact with the owner and he was fair so i will do the same this year.

Hi I'm from Sydney and I've bought stuff on-line from Surfsail either because they had stuff not available localy or it was a particularly good deal. Their online shop is excellent and amazingly I've have had stuff delivered the next day to Sydney. I've also rented some gear from them while visiting WA, great service on every occassion. I have visited some of the other shops while in WA and generally had a good reception from most of them. You guys are lucky to have so much choice.

Well I just hafta jump in now. Pity I haven't logged on for a while I'd love to have replied to some of the posts above

Find a shop you like and stick with it. I have gone to the same shop for near on 15 years now..... SOS. Yes I think they are the best etc etc, and they stock the gear I use, however a big part is the fact that when you go to any shop and spend money every few months... you are building a friendship and relationship with the staff. They then know exactly what you use and like. I can ring John and say "I want a down the line waveboard that will work for me" or "will I like the 2006 RRD 92L wave?" and I will get spot on exactly what I want every time. And a good friendly chat at the same time.
That is much more valuable than saving $50 on a board by running all over town.

As a contrast, I went to another shop a couple of years ago as I needed a 90-95L down the line (full-on) waveboard. and I needed it right then and there, for $800 - $900, to get me out of trouble because my old one busted. (I had to buy second hand risght then as a new board was coming that I ordered a while back but I needed a board to fill in the 3 week gap and seabreezes were imminent!)
Anyway I told the guy there (who has a great deal of windsurf experience) exactly what I said above..... a down the line board, nothing else. As he had nothing in stock second hand of my description, he tried to sell me a freeride!!!! Apparently he had ridden the board and it was pretty turney and was OK down the line.
I tried to mention to him that a slightly wiggly line as one travels along a waist high wave is one thing, but there is no way this 100L freeride board would stay in the pocket on a mast high peeling monster nor would it be able to project anywhere near as vertical up the face and so on. Strewth imagine making the drop.... anyways, maybe a good one for a first time wavesailor at Dutchies but certainly not a DTL board. Then he rolls the eyes and implies I know nothing.

See getting advice is one thing, but when a long time wavesailor walks in with a specific request and they try to sell him something different just to make a buck, that is wrong. Advice, YES. Telling everyone you know best in an arrogant manner, NO.
It is even more pertinent to me living in the country. I can ring SOS and ask for a mast, or fin, or board as I've just busted one... I'll have it in 12 hours.
I wonder what the hell I'd get if I rang the latter shop and said I need a 21cm sideshore wave fin sent asap, here is my VISA number.
Maybe a 50cm Deboichet carbon Formula fin with a note attached saying "these turn OK too, there is corners in Formula racing so should go OK"

pretty obvious who you are talking about

I agree that John and his crew at SOS are always very pleasant.

Should check out Windshack..ok I am a bit biased here.
But it is also the only true wavesailing shop in Perth!

a true salesperson who knows his/her onions will advise you that he/she currently does not have that item in stock.

they are old school salespeople.

Here's the one I go to, smack bang in the middle of the Gold Coast:
SURF FX, 127 Ferry road Southport, phone :+61-7 5531 3199

These guys have been great to me, every time I've gone in they've been helpful, they actually go windsurfing (as opposed to all those other kiteboarding shops), and gave me some good advice.

I'd have to drive an extra 3/4 hour if those guys weren't there!!

No no Greenroom not target- Good Sammys is the place - spent 30 dollars and have a whole new wardrobe (some clothes still had original labels on them from places like kookai, billabong etc!)

The beauty of this is that the rest of money can be spent on beer, windsurfing and adventures
and you're helping those less fortunate

I like WSP's after service. Haven't bought from other shops, but would do if they had something shiny that I like. There is an amazing range in Perth!

Retro - try tossing the wilted lettuce - should make it perky

oh where be the wind?

G'Day
I'm going to add my bit with some praise for 2nd Wind.
I was in the market for a new slalom board and had an idea what i wanted. Got some good advice on my options, got demos to try, which i rate as very important - $2k is a lot to spend without trying it out.
Very casual on the return time of the board. "Drop it in tomorrow if we're closed when you finish up". :)
I spread my money around as i have my favorite brands.
I've dealt with Mark at SurfnSail right from my beginnings in windsurfing and been happy with service there. Just doesn't stock what i use anymore except for ancillaries.
Ian at Sails and Windsurfing in O'connor has always been good for a chat and some gear. Good with the sail repairs too.
Cheers
