for me wave sailing is the pinnacle!
if you are already hooked on planing along in a straight line, can you imagine how many litres of adrenaline and endorphins are going to flood your bloodstream when you do the same thing on a smaller board going down the face of a wave?
what floats your boat and why?

Because they enjoy it.

It's convenient

A quote from an obscure movie once put

"Just cause you like pumping the neighbours dog dosn't mean that I want to"

Different strokes for different folks

Hardie floats my boat, because he has a incessant gushing 'gina.
i too love waves but feel somewhat intimidated with a kite, i'm ok with surfboard, but theres something inheritantly scary with a kite.
But yeah i agree Fish, waves are definatly where its at, just need to harness my skills a bit.

Its all about local conditions, if I had waves instead of flat water 5 minutes away I would definately sail waves everyday. Waves is too much travel for what might be a non existant session (for me anyway) .

Paul,

making love to a beautiful woman is a bit like windsurfing,

first you have to get out your stiff pole,

then slide it in, making sure it goes all the way to the top, otherwise there could be tears later.

Then strap yourself in for the ride of your life

If your struggling to get it going, keep pumping - the harder - the better...... etc etc etc

ok..i'll get my coat.

SMOOTH WATER is what its all about. You can have a flat place with out swell but is smashes you up with small sharp chops,or you can have a big swell with or heaps of chop
For it is the smooth flat water with or with out swell for lasting and blasting.
Give me a Pirates delight anytime.

Guys, I'm in for the waves,
but there's nothing wrong with people staying on flat water. They might be too old, still beginers, freestylers, or speed junkies.
In fact we should be glad, coz waves are crowded anyway, imagine EVERYONE on them!

Lakes, rivers, esturies etc.

Flat water sailing is the social side of windsurfing.

It's where you blast with your friends, hog their wind, stick the nose of your board in their seat harness, spray them when their stuck in the water, and all that other fun stuff.

Waves is about individual skills, about pushing your personal limits.

best winds

people stay on flat water because it is easier therefore it is quiker leaning all your moves but i do think that once you have got ur favorite moves down it is time to go wave

I want to move to wave havent yet cant wait to "carve it up" but freestyling is soo much fun even though i cant do much it is still better that going as fast as u can one way than the other.

but in the end it is up to the person "different strokes for different folkes"

THANKS JF

Your control of grammar and spelling is almost as good as you are at windsurfing.

I have been windsurfing for a season and two bits. This has only been on the flat, but my goal is not to go as fast as possible. What I want to do, is train myself down to a reasonably small board and be able to carve gibe and tack at will. This is one hell of a lot easier on the flat stuff one would imagine.

Once I get all that down, I will probably venture into the surf. However, I will still do the flat stuff. Different aspects of the same sport.

A mate and I went down the coast when the river was all over the place, and we thought we would give the rough stuff a go. I stood and watched the others getting out, then tried myself. It took me an hour or so before I could even get out there. Then I couldn't tack properly, so had to dive in and water start. That would have been OK, but the swells were swamping the wind. Meanwhile my mate had his gear trashed in the shore break.

All in all a very ordinary experience. But I am still keen to get my skills to a level where I am confident out there. Then I will probably latch onto some friendly wave rider for some tips and see if I can't get it.

Flat water, real flat water 6.5m on a 20-30k wind is huge! The kind of water that is protected by a sandbar at low tide. Happens a few times a year at Australind on a Southerly and I will drive past 6km of ocean beach to get there. Hooked in hard and going flat-out has its endorphins too, like the "#*%k! That was close!!!" feel of evading a gust catapult.
Dunno, I think there's also the safety-net of shallow water in the estuaries.

i wasnt having a dig at anyone
i didnt want to start a windsurfer/kiter or waves/flatwater division
just to see what does it for you and why?
and we all know what gets hardie going
personally i fall asleep when im going back and forth on flat water
thats why i avoid it like the plague

There's different ways of going back and forth , i enjoy trying to go as fast as possible on the slalom gear as much as trying to learn new stuff and do jumps on the freestyle gear. It really is a sport of each to their own, lots of people hook in go 500m with no real effort or urgency do a wobbly turn around and repeat for hours on end. I guess really when you look at it, it's just like driving/sailing a boat- lots of people just love being out there in nature away from everything and going places...
