Sailing at Hams beach last year, it was smokin, full powered on my 4.4m, and wave board, coming in through the impact zone, a gust hit me then hit a piece of chop, jumped involuterialy, the wind blew the nose of my board down into a nose dive at full speed, and i got smashed over the front, pulled a muscle in my shoulder on the way over, found a harness hook mark just below the top batton, my shoulder still hurts.

I have had so many they all blur. I have learnt to just hang on to the rig though and they seem to be somewhat less severe now for some reason. I had one last summer. I think I stacked it while trying to gybe. Over the handlebars I went and landed smack on my back on the water. All the extremities tingled and all the wind was knocked out of me. I really just lost the will to live for a while and I just floated there not really being able to move.

i forgot to include a catapult in the thread kinetic g95..anyways i just for some reason just flew over the handle bars again without any clue as to what stopped me, am figuring out probably i did a too broad approach and just got 'gusted' just a marble size black and blue on my elbow..

i had my most memorable catapult today, pb of 31.1 knots then hit by a gust & straight over the bars, came up to find half a boom still locked into the harness, the other half was still on the sail to so i could get back to shore. Borrowed a mates boom after that & got catapulted again, head first into the sail, neck is a bit tender now..
all worth it though, too long since i was last out on the small gear..

My most memorable was when a couple of my mates and cousins (non windsurfers) came around to watch me for a bit on my birthday and on my last run i thought i might try a chop hop (never tried before). So i did and got the air, but ended up having the biggest stack ever in abouot shin deep water which really hurt and when i got up to look at what they thought the were all laughing at me, including my granny, aunties, parents and brothers and sisters aswell. So that wasn't so great. But still very memorable.

This morning at U Turns 4.7 and Evo 92 - tried for some air while flying back in jumped from the back of a wave toward the beach - felt nice until I nose dived into a couple of feet of water and sunk something into the deck near the edge of the timber - harness hook maybe - then the wind disappeared - fickle northerlies

Russh,

Is that picture under you name you? I've seen it on the glasscraft or onboard site and it's always said unknown stack attack at goolwa. I've already uploaded it onto the photos section here if it is you lol.

Yes That's me about three years ago at dare I say at Goolwa - Taken by Radio Rentals Bob. Was a classic dismount in a mega gust on a v windy Westerly

Thank god Bob was nice enough not to post my name & they said unknown on the On Board site. At 96 kilo's doing that sort of stuff I went through several noses of boards, booms. It's a rare occaision now but I certainly paid my dues with a regular sore body and continually emptying my wallet buying replacement gear

nothing, i repeat nothing can prepare you for hitting a submerged mattress.

i kid you not, it was at wellington point many years ago half way between wello and manly on a 15k nor'easter and my hooked in speed run ended abruply and violently.

had absolutely no idea what i had hit but as i waterstarted "it" floated to the surface looking like a human corpse wearing a patterned t-shirt.

the residents of wellington point were probably disturbed by my screams.

that's a lot of laughs from my side! dammn..a mattress, i've seen some weird floating debris from woman's underwear to dead mammals, etc... but a mattress! that's one big driftwood to avoid...at least it was a cozy landing..i'd freak out too...cheers

i was sailing along a few days ago , a bit overpowered with my 6.7 , jumped over a huge bit of chop then next thing i know im laying ontop of the sail looking up at the sky with my harness line all twisted up and hooked in . i think my boom connected with my hip in all the commotion have absolutely no idea what happened

Yesterday....sailing a 'gusty' offshore, probably catatpulted between 5-8 times, overpowered half the time....underpowered the rest. Trying to hang on and pulled something in my left shoulder, the rest of my body just aches!

Unfortunately though.....I'll do it all again

Have you got the procedure in your head, to get your head into some air, if next time that happens you end under the sail instead of on top????

Breath is likely to be knocked out of you when you hit the water and no airpocket under sail

We've just had a thread on this subject, the best advice to come out of it was,
Practice releasing your hook underwater. then go for the mast and pull your self towards it.
Even if you don't have a quick release, it should be possible to get enough slack to grab some air from around the mast. If you have a fixed hook and clamps on both sides, you may have to undo different clamps depending which tack you're on. It's good to have this well worked out before you're stuck underwater running out of air!!!!

Hang on to boom thru the catapult, that should stop the lines twisting.

After all the interesting stuffs stopped, sweep your hand downwards from your chest, that should dislodge the harness line
