Charging without removing the mini motion from my helmet is now easy!
Just slide the charger under the strap!!

Nice. Here's the MiniMotion on a WIP impact west from my post last year. I use the same system for charging.

I have the wireless motion.

I have downloaded yesterday's track from the GPS to my laptop. The file type is OAO.

Now I need to convert the OAO into a GPX file.
On Julien's website it says, you need desktop utilities to do that. And it point to the downloads section.
In the downloads section, there is no file for desktop utilities

Does anyone know how to do this, is there another way or program to convert the files?
Or am I just overlooking something.

why do you want to convert the file?
All the analysing software is happy with the oao format
There's a few online sites that will do it

When you connect to the motion device, 192.168.0.1 there is a button to download a gpx file just to the right of download oao file

More accurate GPS satellite system is now a thing.

- Most improvements for us do come from improvements in space vehicles. In the same way we can make phones with weak internal antennas today because the array of mobile antennas has grown so much around us. If you took your current smartphone back to 2000, it wouldn't connect to anything. In the same way, every GNSS receiver in the world is enjoying improved space vehicles.

- At the end of the day, it's an issue of inconvenience versus gain. To be done right, corrective techniques available today require more space, volume, energy and money. And if you can already trust your 500m to 0.01kn, is sub-0.01kn worth the inconvenience? If tomorrow something changes the game, I'll be on it.

The article is a year old, but the technologies it describes (RTK and PPP) are several years older than that. Unfortunately, both typically require post-processing with additional data (base station data for RTK, accurate ephemerides for PPP). Even if this could be done in real time, the amount of processing would be significantly increased. Which is a problem since the current GPS chips cannot even process the all the currently available data at high data rates - the u-blox M9 chip, for example, limits the number of satellites used.

Even with current GPS units like the Motion or the ESP logger, where exactly you mount the GPS can change the results by more than the actual measurement error. With 2 ESP loggers mounted on the boom, you get differences in alpha speed from the differences in how far the boom arms move in a jibe. If you put a GPS on top of your helmet and sail in a bit of chop, the movements of your head can change the results by more than the error estimate for larger distances (like nautis). That said, these changes are much smaller than the errors you get from a GPS uses in poor position, like a watch with an underhand grip.

From an email late August

"Minis M10 are fine, LCDs M10 have a 20% success rate. I sent these for early trials 2 and 1 week ago to users around here in need of replacements. This week I will be sending 7 Minis + 1 LCD to 3 different australian users. When they confirm these are good, I'll start the "many LCDs" shipments. There's also been a few important software feature upgrades.

Cordially,

J"

I paid up fully about 2 years ago and have not received the order. There has been no response to my last two emails (last one sent 3 days ago). The last response I had from Julien indicated shipping to Australia would be "started" around the 25/7. No product received and no emails returned since! Just curious but has anyone in Oz received an LCD in the last 1-2 years?

Hi Mikey, I and a few others in Australia, have had contact with Julien over last couple of months, mainly with new firmware trials, both mini and LCD, and also some updates to solve an issue that developed in my LCD. As posted above Julien is finding a low success rate with the new LCD. I'm one of the ones waiting to get a delivery of 7 new minis and 1 LCD. Once the new LCD testing is done, my understanding is Julien is planning to clear the old orders/group orders we have.

edit, there's notes on the firmware and hardware change log on the motion-gps.com website if anyone interested in more details

Just wondering how far could the wifi signal reach and would 50 devices be able to connect live or would 4G/5G be more reliable for live telemetry?

That is an interesting question Berowne, because the Mini-Motion arose out of an earlier proposal and prototype that Julien designed as a live event device, that would transmit live data via wifi to a terminal on the beach for live results display updates. Of course, there is a limit to the range wifi will connect and transmit, but Julien was confident that this concept would work if designed and implemented correctly. I don't remember him saying if 50 devices could connect at once, but I do remember some discussion that all devices would not have to be 'connected' at once. As I understand it, as sailors came past the run, they would come in range and update the base computer.

I am sure Julien can correct and elaborate.

It seems range for most types of WIFI is 100-140m, and 250m for 802.11n which isn't really that useful on the water.

I wonder if there is a cheaper phone data plan for IOT devices?
I imagine eSIMS with 5G would be much better on the open water with kms range. The new eSims should be updateable via software so no need to open the device keeping packaging simple... but more chips and $.

See a lot of the iq teams using these for data / training

Close to what I'm thinking, but not the ?499.00 price!
I do wonder how they get global IoT coverage organised....?

So i finally got around to updating my firmeware on my Motion LCD but when i go to the downloads page and click on wireless LCD to download the latest firmware i get the following error

404 File Not Found

The page you are looking for does not exist. Sorry !

Anyone else having issues with updating firmware?

I can wirelessly connect to my motion but cannot update the firmware if the firmware file is not available.

I'm trying to update from a MacBook and also tried the update from a iMac

It looks like a website glitch to me. All the other links I checked did work. I assume it will be fixed when Julien notices and gets time to do it.

Or it may be that he has found a bug in earlier versions and is uploading a new corrected fw version.

What device are you trying to upgrade fw on? Mini or LCD? What fw version are you running now? What is the extra feature you wanted the upgrade for?

I have saved most FW versions. PM me with your email address and I can probably send you what you seek.

Just a quick heads up that there is a new firmware release for the Wireless LCD and Wireless Mini. Build 3174 fixes a lot of bugs and is recommended to everyone. It also has lots of nice new features, detailed in the change log:

www.motion-gps.com/motion/changelog.html#3174

If anyone has never successfully accessed their Motion from their phone, they might find my workaround helpful:

Thanks to Julien for a considerable amount of time invested in the latest updates. The new mini fw flashes a light regularly so you know it's logging, plus has the ability to check on water any 4 results of your choice preset into the device setup, big step forwards for this data logger.

thanks for this update Julien. The flash every 10s will be very helpful to know it's turned on. Not only on the water, but to stop me accidentally driving home without turning it off!!

Normal day to day sailing 5hz. Smaller files are easier to deal with.
Speed sailing in optimum conditions 10hz
