Nice filming. The small waves you rode at 1.20. Is that the southern side curved sandbank inside the bar? What tide?

Those waves were near Matt's beach area. Just South of the Gemini Towers. Tide was high I think, or maybe just after high tide.

I was using a 75cm mast. It was a bit too shallow at some points if you come off the foil.

At 1:00 in that video, I hit the bottom somewhere around there but didn't include it in the vid.

I think if you can stay up high on the foil at high tide, you would pretty much be fine foiling anywhere through there.

Should we be worried about the ramifications of the jetski speed limit about to hit the passage? I have a feeling the 20 knot speed limit will be across the board.

I think you'll find maritime speed limits apply to motor craft and not vessels under sail

The jet skis are annoying but I don't think there are too many that go hooning.

The real danger comes from half-submerged crab pots

Hey guys do the half submerged crab pots have a white bouy attatched or whats going on with those.

Yep its amazing how fast that rope will stop you! Also can make a mess of the fin box.
Some people have 20m rope in 5m water....
Pass on the down current side.

The crab pot are set on the bottom and attached to a white bouy with nylon rope. The obvious danger is the trip hazard from the rope, but if set in too shallow water the pots are also a fin hazard. Pass the bouy downwind and you're OK

Sometimes the rope to the float is too short for the tide, leaving it mostly submerged. Also, when the tide is ripping and the rope is too long, you have to predict where it runs under the water.

I forgot to add that if the rope appears to be long, thin and transparent then you have probably snagged a fisherman. This will definitely slow you down but has the advantage of clearing the beach of obstacles.

This is the old Lighthouse base now.
Mid 80s this was in centre of island. The surfline was about 100m east of here. Interestingly, in the 80s the best waves at Bribie were where the new bar has cut thru. Many uncrowded barrels found surfing there..

Anyone sailing here this wkend?
I sailed it yesterday and will again today.
The new entrance seems to create a bit of a venturi effect where the SE wind gets squeezed through the entrance and is stronger.

yes a lot of debris to watch out for,

had fun today. super bumpy at high tide. wind was pumping.
some of the guys ventured a bit further towards the new bar and got some big jumps on the waves inside the passage. back loop height jumps.

i stayed further inside. everywhere you look there are fun size ramps. keen to see it in lesser winds too.

the current is pretty nasty at the mouth. theres a flat area between the last sandbank (wave break island) and the western side of north bribie. one of the guys was practicing gybes there and got sucked out the bar while water starting. could have ended badly so use caution when the tides running out cause it's probably not worth it with those conditions.

everywhere else though is some of the best bump and jump i've experienced. reminded me a little of shearwater in spots.

we were there from about 11.30 onwards. probably on the water by 12.30.

Joshy got sucked out. all ended well and he is fine.

^ What you call 'wave break' is Gemini bank. Matts channel is closer to kiters bank.Great on the bigger high tides. Lived on my boat on the NE corner of Gemini bank for 15months. Amazing how quickly its all changing.
Run out tide on New bar really dampens the swell entering the passage. Run in tide has smooth lil ramps to hit. Reminds me of the old cut thru to Bulcock/ Bar sessions in the 80s. Beware of the run out tide, its got some pull to it.
