Due to the COVID pandemic the Windsurfer world governing body has made the decision to postpone the scheduled 2020/2021 Windsurfer LT Worlds at MBSC until the following year.

Mounts Bay SC will still be hosting the Worlds in 2021/22

This has opened up an opportunity for 2020/2021 WA State Titles to be held at Mounts Bay SC between Christmas and New Year 2020.

We plan to run the WA States Titles over a number of days with all disciplines (Course Racing, Marathon, Slalom and Freestyle) as well of heaps of fun after racing social events.

This will be the biggest and best Windsurfer State Titles ever to be held in WA so pencil in the dates start training now!

Light to very light N-NE conditions. More than 20 Windsurfers LT and WindFoil starters made for an excellent spectacle. The LT's continue to show the Windfoils how it's done in light conditions! Cheap beers and snacks at presentations after racing on the MBSC upstairs balcony capped off a nice winter's day.

MBSC Winter Series #2 ResultsThree short-course windward-leeward races were competed last Sunday after a bit of a wait for the breeze to kick in. For a long time early in the afternoon it looked like the only that would be moving on the water would be the juniors on the club LTs with paddles, but patience paid off and the first race in 3-8 knots started at about 2:30pm.

There were some challenges on the course, with a tightly packed cruising yacht fleet causing some interesting crosses and brave calls. The wind also constantly clocked around to the north-west during the afternoon, leaving those that went long left on the beat sometimes regretting it. Similarly those that didn't wear a wetsuit might also have regretted their decision by the end of the day.

The starts were tight and the highly favored boat end caused a few bumps and pushing between the fleet of seven sailors. Pumping was also essential to keep position on the downwind legs and Bjorn's vocal encouragement and audible flapping of his sail only drove others to pump harder!

Well done to Sam, David, David and Noel for getting out on the course, and Greg for moral support from the upstairs bar. Unfortunately the foilers didn't have enough wind to get out on the course.

Editors comment: "Foiling is not proving the light wind panacea that it is being promoted as, unfortunately, maybe the technology is needing more development by innovative board/foil designers and sailmakers. Foiling is superb and tops however, sadly, the foilers seem to spend a lot of time rigging/tuning (like foiling Moth racers) and less sailing on any given race regatta day. Will this years race gear be superseded soon for the new light wind machines being developed ? Lets see what the new foiling gear for 2022 brings !"

Great to see the LTs having a great time out there during the winter series Richard. It's certainly the forte of the LT to be able to race in sub 8 knots.

yes, windfoiling does require a certain amount of wind to get up and foiling. We can indeed float around the course in sub 8 knots as the LTs do, albeit a little slower, but it's not really what we're about.

With a lot of promising youngsters getting into windfoiling, the WA race foilers are looking forward to a great and progressive season, hopefully with plenty of racing at MBSC and at other venues around the state. Looking forward to the next winter series race, hopefully with a bit more wind.

Opening Day Invitational Race Saturday 3rd October

Open to all Windsurfer LTs, and the Windfoil crew will also be out to slice up some jellyfish.

Briefing at 1:15pm, opening at 2:00pm and racing starts 2:30pm

This is bound to be a big day with two classes of sailboards out on the water and afterwards at the bar.

Last year's event was a great opportunity for a wide range of the racing windsurfing community to get together for some fun on the water and beers on the grass afterwards.

This has opened up an opportunity for 2020/2021 WA State Titles to be held at Mounts Bay SC in the last days of December and the first few days of January 2021.

We plan to run the WA States Titles over a number of days with all disciplines (Course Racing, Marathon, Slalom and Freestyle) as well of heaps of fun after-racing social events.

Initial plans are to run afternoon competition on December 28 & 29th (Course Racing), Freestyle and Slalom on the 2nd Jan and a Marathon race on the 3rd January.

The Foilers may also run an event on the 3rd Jan from MBSC, so hopefully it will be a good crowd each evening at the BBQs and bar.

MBSC WINTER SERIES - FINAL DAY THIS SUNDAY

Hi everyone, this Sunday is the final race-day in the MBSC winter series for 2020. The Class Captain won't be able to make it, but it looks like it will be a good breeze for the short-course races. A westerly breeze will give very flat water and a few new challenges as the usual patterns of a favored side might not be there.

Briefing at 1pm as always. Can someone please email the Class Captain ([email protected]) a summary of who wins this month's sheep-station and any commentary on the shenanigans out on the water? Pics or it didn't happen.

(Apologies for the lack of pictures and colour, but it's been a busy week and the Class Captain has run out of time!)

MBSC Club Championship Race 1 ResultsJust like the weekend before, a fresh sea-breeze went a bit nuclear just after the start! 10 sailors came off the start line and it was a reasonably competitive beat up to the first mark before a quick reach across to Addison on the South Perth side of the river. That's where it all got a bit crazy as the next beat up to Robins spread out the fleet. The wind was 20+ knots and a steep chop was a challenge for many.

The next legs were a downwind reaching blast, across to Nedlands, then Anderson, and then Quarry. Greg was having too much fun and decided to go all the way into Pelican Point carpark to show off his carve gybing skills on the LT, whilst the rest of us got some air-time over power-boat wakes on some scary-fast (for a Wally) long broad reaches back down the river. Footstraps - who needs them......

By the this time there were quite a few retirements and the course was shortened with the hope of getting some more finishers for the handicap results. Well done to David Green who popped back in to the beach at MBSC to check on which mark he should be sailing to next, and then re-launching to finish the race, and Noel Lacey who just kept on going and going. Heading off the wind in 22 knots isn't so much of a problem for Noel now!

MBSC is running a handicap scoring system this season and Bjorn took first place this week. Fastest finisher was Michael.

The outcome from a downwind start, before the Bear attacked

MBSC Short-course races 1-3 Sunday was a flukey day, with a forecast light seabreeze flipping around to the North-East, and swinging to North-west for short periods. Race 1 was a bit of a lottery with the breeze, but Richard seemed to like it and was up with the front of the fleet of 10 for the top mark, led by Peter. Mark and Michael managed to pump their way energetically neck and neck all the way down the run to the finish for a dead-even first place finish. Both were so tired that a gentleman's agreement was implemented for the next race - no aggressive pumping!

Race 2 was started through a downwind start line as the southerly sea-breeze arrived just in time. This made for the most compressed first mark rounding we've had for a long time, followed by a really nice beat to the finish in moderate breeze and very flat water. Mark was feeling the pressure and gave up second place to Peter with only 20m to go.

Race 3's run down to the first mark was quite eventful, with Don't Poke The Bear (Dave Mann's Sharpie) creating havoc as they came up through the fleet of windsurfers. Dave was in a bearish mood, and this time he was doing the poking. He did have right of way and maybe we'll have a racing rules of sailing day as a theme one afternoon? Fortunately no harm done.....
Clive won that race by gambling and going west into the bay, taking everyone else by surprise when he crossed ahead of second place by 30m.

Thankyou also to East Fremantle Yacht Club for hosting an Windsurfer LT invitation race series on Saturday afternoon. 10 sailors competed in three short races, which like Sunday had a first race lottery followed by two more with a steady sea-breeze. The outgoing current made for a new challenge, but Blackwall Reach was good fun to sail in and the racing was competitive.Noel looking pretty happy to be just ahead of StephenSneaky Pete pinching up to cross the finish line, whilst meanwhile somewhere out of frame, Mark quietly curses2020 Windsurfer LT sail colours now available from Surf Sail Australia. A red hot 20-23 knot southwester greeted the 13 strong fleet on Sunday for the club race. After a false start general recall the fleet spread out around the course struggling at times with the solid SW bullets. Mark and Clive battled it out at the front of the pack while the others searched for Foam (55). Mark eventually prevailed to take the winners pennant and ring the bell in the bar.
