Hi all. Missed the announcement of the sfv2, so I recently got a sf830 (second hand). Until then I was using a ma1050 with s210 stab.
I got the sf830 because the ma1050 lacks glide and pump when trying to surf the lake wind bumps on the big lakes in the Netherlands. Tried it with my s210 stab, which worked but it felt really slow. Felt like my wing had plenty of power to go faster, but the foil didn't want to. While that doesn't matter much for surfing the bumps, I also like to throw in a jump here and there, for which I want a bit more speed.
So I'm looking for a new/better stabilizer to unlock more speed and a looser feeling because the sf830 + s210 feels more stable than the ma1050 with the same stabilizer. But I'm overwhelmed by the options. My current shortlist is s185, s178, s145 or the s142.
The conditions I will be using this foil combo in will be around 20 knots with up to 1m lake wind bumps. If the wind gets to about 24-25 knots I switch to windsurfing. Any less than 16 knots or flat water I switch back to the ma1050 + s210 combo.
Not sure if it matters: I'm 56kg without wetsuit. Use a north seek 68L and usually a 3m wing.
Curious to hear your thoughts on stabilizer recommendations!
Just to follow up on the stabilizer/SF890 discussion — I haven’t ridden the 890 myself, but I have spent some time on the SF1080, and that’s a pretty slow wing. If I remember correctly, with the S210 stab I could only get around 25–26 km/h out of it. With the same stab and the MA1050v2 I was getting about 33 km/h.
What’s interesting is that with the MA850v2 + S178, I’ve only managed around 36 km/h so far.
So I’m wondering if the stabilizer might not be the main issue here. It could simply be that the SF890 itself isn’t a particularly fast wing. My guess would be that it’s a few km/h slower than the MA850v2, which could put it roughly in the same speed range as the MA1050v2.
The SF680 and SF530 are faster, anything larger and they don't have great top end. However they go slow really really well and can carve for days, they are surf focused foils after all. The UHM masts give you a few more kmhs and I would size down the stabs. I use the S145 and S122 in all conditions. The older stabs are just too big imo. When I put the SF690 on I do have the mast moved forward in the box, it does not push back as much as the larger foils when on larger waves - which makes it so sweet for the fast windy stuff.
