If you're not ready to get one, DO NOT try a long skinny board.
A month ago, I made myself a board very inspired by the AFS blackbird. it's 6'2" x 24", for a 100L, 5.6 Kg with the pad.
I'm 75kg, and usually ride into light wind, i can now get going a few knots lower than with previous 75l wider board.
I don't jump, no straps installed, and mostly ride around, surf the chop, ride either cloud9 FS1150 or FS850.
The length is not a problem at all, with the tracks that far forward, i basically stand in the middle of the board, and the extra inertia, gives some stability for foot change, make the surfing turns smoother...
Even when the wing picks up a bit, I prefer to drop wing size as the board accelerates much easier and just get on foil by itself.
i'm not sure what condition would make me pick the smaller board now :)
