Long due update.
I got to demo the MA v2 front foils and Glide 220 tail.
No I'm right now getting on foil with MA 890 in 15-18kn wind with 4.0m wing - no problem. Even this foil is set all the way down to number 3 on my board. The MA 990 had to be pushed back to 1.5 and it was still to big for anything over 20kn. The 990 has basically the same lift as Gravity 1800 except that it can glide and I can actually turn.
I had 3-4 sessions thus far and I managed to do 2 complete gybes. The MA foils are such improvement for gybes, it's scary.
I even tried MA790 which works as well, but I find it somewhat weird. Maybe it's due to the super large tail (Glide 220).
Get the 170 or 180 tail asap :-)
The 220 is too big for those foils, especially if you have a bit of wind (eg. 12+ kn). (I only use the 220 with the HA1180 in 8-12kn)
And it will take 1-2 sessions to get used to it but way more fun. More speed, more glide, more gybes :-)
I got the 180 - no issues getting used to it! First session was great. In fact way more fun than 220!
One thing that I'm confused about is that even with 890+180 I still need to put my mast around 3-4 mark. I've seen people put masts all the way forward but for me that would be way too much lift. Is my stance wrong? Should I be using my front foot way more?
Awesome. The 180 is fun. If you do get a big foil, the 220 is a great tail for low wind/small wave conditions. I've had lots of fun sessions on my 1180/220!
Mast position is very personal. If you can, get someone to take video of you on foil so you can actually compare your stance to other good riders on youtube. Or, ask some better riders what they think of your stance eg. Do they think you look balanced.
As you get better, change foils and tails, change boards, etc. etc. etc. you will find yourself adjusting the mast forwards/backwards based on what you're feeling.
