What would be the advantage of having a "social" vs a "competitive" division?

What difference would it make to the scoring?

Not bagging, just wondering.

Currently it is up to individual on whether they wish to post, if they know they are hurting team they are less likely to post. Also if you have those that just want to go out and have a good sail on wave/b&j gear they can still strap a gps on their arm and post whilst not receiving flak for choosing that gear on that day.

Would not make any difference to scoring aside from maybe introducing a second division.

What advantage does it bring, by stopping accusations such as have been levelled above. The top teams do exactly that, and as I said some have been damn selective in who they have picked to be sailors.

Disadvantage is good sailors that drop down a division can push teams up.

Food for thought anyway.

Hardie & nebs, I think this whole comp thing you guys have set up, is just the ducks nuts, I'd leave it as is
I have one board, one sail and one other team member, and sail in open water, so it's a challenge just to get a result. But for me, it's good to compare our results with the guns and their gear

Heres a thought...

WHY NOT JUST INCLUDE THE FASTEST 2 TIMES FROM EACH DIVISION in the averaging of each result. For some reason I thought it was already done this way.

There are plenty of cases where the fastest 2 times in each division for a day are not from the same 2 people. So its inclusive- it includes the best 2 results from each division.

Makes it inclusive just by posting for your team, and you never know who got the best results until the data has been posted- especially for distance, 1-hour and alpha racing...

yep i like it just the way it is also, splitting it in to teams with in a team makes no real sense as the idea i believe originally was for this to be a social challenge.....
the serious sailors can still post their times on gpsss and participate in different copmps like the recent 1 hr challenge.

In a perfect world... cmon it's sailing of course it will end out with people being overly competitive.

I like the 2 best times results proposed by slowboat, that would work better.

Whatever we do, we need to encourage people to participate, log their data, so they can see it, and have a history of performance and watch their own PB's. It's also good for others to see how everyone else is doing.

The 2 best performances per team in each seperate category, is a good idea, and it was Vando's recommendation from the beginning. If this in no way deletes the first paragraph's intentions and Ben can make it work somehow, and people agree, that elimnates the need for the divisions idea, or A and B teams.

Others please post your opinions on this.
