First make sure the fin head is not too deep. Zooming in on the pic ,I notice the back end of the base is round with some file marks. It should be square with rounded corners. Has someone previously built up the head and badly fitted it into a oversized box ? I would start with filing the rounded point of the head to match the square profile of the box. Slowly , slowly, little by little using the screws.

I’m no long distancer nor foiler. Would I be correct in thinking that foiling would be easier on the body but harder to concentrate when mentally tired ?

Ok 400 it is. 🤔 Thats the finish I give my boards. It’s a big fin for grip not so much speed. I suppose there could be difference in finishes of being fast and slippery apposed to grippy. But then a slower grippier fin could end up faster because you can push off it more with confidence. Cranking upwind or bearing off , must act differently on a fin. My head hurts.

ps, I have a beautiful carbon Curtice fin which is a shiny piece of art. It’s horrible. Like Elmo’s shiny fins , it violently spins out and I have to virtually stop to get it to regrip.

So ???
600?
I remember the same topic on board finish , and it ended up a sh.t show.
Some speed boards were polished and some purposefully kinda rough ,400 grit.
I had the belief is to go as fine as to not have the water beed .
But fins is a different black art , or is it ?

Smoothed over with Qcell. Hot coated. Possibly another hot coat after a light sand.
Does anyone know what the best performing wet and dry finish should be ? I believe a sexy gloss is not the best.

What's the angle?

45 deg. It’s for big sails , shallow water ,not heavy weed.

With much sadness we can’t buy much loved Fangy fins anymore . This is a possible DIY alternative. I started with a 30 cm Delta and reshaped the outline. Built up the bottom flange with glass filled resin. Built up thickness with Q,cell resin. Hand shaped with flapper wheel and finished with orbital sander. Leading and trailing edges are the original G10 fin material. Will cover in a layer of Basalt twill ,(easier to drape than carbon fibre ),to protect the softer sides.

Was also for light wind (front strap) and strong wind (rear strap).

On slalom boards they had 2 sets of front and 2 rear so you could course race. Front set for upwind, rear set for reaches

My first funboard, UFO , had two rows of front straps and three in a row at the back. It was sooo heavy and draggy that you needed the far rear one in heavy wind. My arms feel sore just thinking about it.

Hey , what about laminating a board ,with one continuous thread , the way north makes those sails ? You could perfectly control the layers , angles of threads . Perfect stiffness , strength , twist , whatever you want. On a rotisserie , both sides all in one hit. I’m a god dam genius . I’ll accept a case of beer from whoever does this first.😀

boots in straps. There is only one good fix for it.
sand down the grooves of your pads under the straps.

I would advise against that. Maybe find another type of boot if yours are too grippy

I've gone from no bootie's , cos that's for pansies, to always wearing booties. Sick of cutting my feet and pulling out urchin spines. Breaking my little toe was the changing point. A stuck foot in the strap just before jibing was not good. A quick tack was even worse. Tried different booties and they all stuck, then I sanded the grip off, just under the strap. Worked, the perfect amount of grip, just like barefoot. If your always wearing booties, it works well sanding the grip off just under the strap. Now it feels normal. Game changer. Probably not good barefoot.

Blast from the past.Remember Drooling at all the bright coloured windsurf boards and sails in the shops. Back then there were so many shops. I remember riding from one to the next on my pushbike. Those shops were buzzing. Since then the best windsurf improvement game changer was the clamp on boom then followed by the ratchet extension. Oh , 2 piece masts are pretty cool too
