I find the Motos don't have the bottom end of the Turbos but I'm not sure of the difference between them and my OD's..
They are great in shallow water with consistent wind.
Great overpowered..remember, I'm an old weakling, hence the shallow water.. I find anything that has a luff tube that fills is a handful for me in deep choppy water..🙄

Fixed 🙂I think...
I took the tensioner off and the batten out. The batten was fine. The tensioner wasn't working - not screwing in and out.
I got another from an older sail, but they've changed the batten diameters and it didn't fit.
We had another look at the tensioner, with a bit of fiddling and WD40 it worked..boy, it's a 2 sec job when the tensioner loosens and you know what you're doing..😀
I haven't rigged it yet but I think everything is working ok.

Sue, Ar you familiar with the technique of threading a cord through a sleeve with a safety pin?
It's a slow process with a batten but with any luck you don't need to go too far.

So you'd have to attach a cord to the batten somehow?

No, the technique is to grip the batten well before the break by squeezing the tube, then crunch up the tube in front of the batten. Grip the front of the batten with the other hand. Let go of the back hand and pull the tube straight. this will move the batten up the tube by the amount you managed to scrunch.

When you say scrunch the tube you mean the batten pocket?

Just use a slightly smaller tube and wrap a few rubber bands around the end, push it into the broken tube and will pull out.

Thanks.

I recently had a similar problem. The loop came off and had wrinkles in the sail and still had the wrinkles when the loop re-established. I removed the batten and established I had a broken batten tip. I replaced the broken section, reinstalled and now working perfectly.

I suspect the loop came off in the first place because I had broken the tip, releasing the tension in the batten.

That could be it. I was thinking I could have damaged the tip getting everything together but it may have already been broken.
How did you fix the broken end?
I thought I'd need a new batten.
Really busy this week ɓut I may have a chance to check it out tomorrow.
I might leave fixing it for a while.
I'm having an operation next week and will be off the water for 3 months.
I'll use it as is this week and fix it properly post operation, once I'm good enough to look at it.

Battens are made from interchangeable components - tip, middle and end. Ask your fellow sailors if they have any spare battens and find one with a longer tip section and trim to replace your broken section.

The only tricky but is removing the broken tip. If the break is complete, you might have to remove some stitching at the end of the batten pocket in the luff to remove the broken section.

I have an old 7.5m Turbo that I kept for battens..I wonder if I can adapt that..do they all have the same bend characteristics ? If I make each section the same length as the 5m Mach batten?

Best to pull the battern out and have a look slacken off the screw use a small screw driver to unhook the cord, pull the tensioner off and pull batton out with long nose pliers or from pushing opposite end where camm slides on.
I find the the bottom batten breaks or pushes in quiet offen as you bump the ground transporting to and from water.
If broken you can Resleeve using araldite and a small piece of smaller diameter carbon inserted in each end of broken section. You can buy new battens but sometimes hard to get and not cheap. Maybe $50 metre from windsurf shop.

Thanks. I think it's going to be a pain to get out once the time comes. It's in quite deep and you can't loosen it..
I'll give it a go and probably order another batten once I'm off the water.
Trying to get as much sailing as possible in the next week and a half..😜

the batten could be broken, it would be unusual to just loose that much tension

Mmm maybe...the loops had come off when I first noticed it was loose?
Other than the wrinkles it looks OK?

It's the boom batten / cam. That photo was taken once I'd fixed the loop over the end. I didn't take a photo after sailing when I noticed the wrinkles.
I'll have to have a closer look at it when I get a chance.
Is it easy to tell if the batten is broken without taking it all apart?

pull the batten, check that the thinner bits aren't being pushed in to the thicker tubes.

OK. I'll give it a go. It's pushed a fair way in and might be hard to grab.
Can you tell if you don't pull it out much? Will I have to take the loop off?

I noticed my 5m Mach2 had a very loose batten and the cord over the end of the tensioner wings had come off.
I fixed it, but it had been a long time since I'd had to do it, and I stuffed around a lot before I finished.
The 5m works now but the batten has wrinkles.
The tensioner no longer works so I can't tighten or loosen the batten.
I'm wondering if I've stuffed the batten end trying to fix it..what am I likely to find if I take it apart?
I'm wondering whether to be bothered or whether to just live with a wrinkly batten..🤔

I remember a post years ago about booties. All the replies were bagging them.
Good to hear so many have found the light.😁😉
I usually use low cut ones all year round. I bought a high pair split toe but they were nearly impossible to get on and off and had a sharp sliver of rubber between the toes. No way of getting in there and fixing it.
After that rave review anyone want a pair of boots? Only been worn once..😉
My solution now is a 1mm inner wetsuit sock ( not cheap but A1). I can get a bootie big enough for them to fit and use the velcro overstrap to hold it in place.
I think my usual size works??
You just need to make your footstraps bigger in winter.
They work a treat..no more frozen feet.😊

oneill ninja 3 mm boots

These look like they would not get stuck?
I noticed that all boots wear off the grip under straps anyway.

My Oneill's don't seem to get stuck. I only wiggle them out a bit if It's getting super knarly and imight want to eject or sometimes, if I think, before a gybe.

El Nino is supposed to be really strong this year. Ocean temperatures in some parts of the world are already at record highs.
What will El Nino do to the wind in different parts of the world?
Will there be anywhere in the world that might have better wind conditions than normal because of El Nino, or is El Nino typically bad for windsurfing wind everywhere?

Better around our area..more seabreezes . Newcastle / Central coast NSW.😀
Worse bushfires and heat though..😒

I lost mine in a stack but I think it caught on something as I heard a crack / snap.
I now wear a Watch suit and it's great! GPS results are good and I don't have to worry about losing another watch.
I'd worn mine 5 years straight 24/7 . I think if I hadn't had that stack it would still be going.

I always wear booties so I can't compare . I wiggle my feet out a bit if things look like they'll get sketchy.

These ones have a velcro strap you can tighten to prevent your feet going forward into the toes. I've never had any issues with the velcro catching on anything.

i always wear booties, most of the year its too cold not to. I like the front straps tight, so i can only get toes into them. And a narrow but high rear strap which i can push my foot all the way thru for riding. I've tried all the variations and this works best for me.
Also found that when the sole of the bootie wears down it seems to get softer and grippier and more likely to get stuck

Mine slip when worn..when it's too light to get in the straps.
I get about 6 months from a pair but I average 2 sails a week or more over a year.

The idea of doing a running jump start with muddy feet ( Budgy) sounds like a recipe for disaster. ??
I know people do it but I have enough trouble doing beachstarts with muddy feet. ??

Why ask if you're not willing to try!

I didn't ask..
I agree that the running start is a good technique but not for me at Budgy..unless I'm somewhere sandy .

I've had the same thing happen a few times and I think I just ignored the message and it kept logging. My Garmin battery went flat after I had a good 2 sec. Later I got a good 5x10 with the Motion. I'm pretty sure I couldn't combine two sessions from different devices with gpsspeedreader. I'm sure I have managed to combine two FIT files though.

I'll remember that next time and keep going.
My Motion had run out of battery so the watch was my last chance and I didn't want to risk losing the session. 🙂

Last session the watch lost connection to the phone and I couldn't get it to do anything. I had just come in to change boards and was 200m out again so I wasn't going back to the car.
I ended up powering it off and then restarting a session which got it going but I ended up with 2 files for the day.
I combined them using am internet program but apparently the export isn't approved by the GPSTC..I just retried it again in speed reader but the combined file is an exp.gpy which isn't approved??
Can I get an approved type format from the combined files to export from gpsspeedreader ? How to?
Also anyone have experience with getting out of the lost phone connection issue while out on the water? 🙄😡

RIP Alva Dave
Gone but never forgotten.
David passed away on Friday night after a battle with cancer.
He was an incredible naturally talented sailor who touched so many with his kindness and generosity in the windsurfing/water sports community giving his time, assistance, advice, support and in some instances equipment.
Knowing Dave made me not just a better sailor but a better person, his loss will be felt deeply.
Love you always.

Sorry to hear this. Best wishes.
