Murray boaters warned: flooding hazard

NSW Maritime is warning boaters heading out on the Murray River to take extra care as water levels are extremely high and more wet weather is forecast.

NSW Maritime Acting Regional Manager Murray/ Inland Shayne Wilde said some areas of the Murray River - from Albury to Tocomwal - were already in minor to moderate flood.

'Boaters need to take caution as more rain is forecast in these areas and in the mountains upstream,' Mr Wilde said.

'The river is flowing faster than normal and contains a lot of debris - some of which is visible, but a lot which is submerged or semi-submerged - such as tree branches.

'Navigation aids may also have been displaced in some areas. Skippers should take extreme care and travel at a safe speed for the conditions.

Mr Wilde said areas of the Murray where flooding was of most concern included Albury, Corowa, Barooga and Tocomwal.

'Water levels were already quite high, with lakes leading to the Murray full prior to this recent rainfall,' Mr Wilde said.

'Some areas are heading to moderate flood levels, with water flowing into surrounding flood plains and forests.'

Mr Wilde said boaters should take extreme care on any flood-affected waters until conditions return to normal.
