Powerboat P1 pilot Shelley Jory swaps jobs for a day

Powerboat P1 pilot Shelley Jory got her first taste of extreme sailing alongside double Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson on the first Friday of Cowes Week.

Southampton-born Jory joined Robertson on board the 40ft 'ishares', one of ten identical catamarans that battled it out for the Cowes round of the iShares Cup - the sailing alternative to Powerboat P1.

Despite being more used to racing 41 foot powerboats with 1050 horse power, Jory still found the light, powerful sailing machine enough of a thrill to crave some more.

The #44 Iko Casa crew member said: 'I have to be honest - that is the first time I have been sailing and not been bored. The speed of these boats is incredible and the way they throw them around in very tight racing conditions amazed me. I cannot believe we didn't hit another boat and I can't wait to go again.'

'It's like driving an F1 car around Sainsbury's car park,' adds Robertson. 'Each race lasts around 15 minutes and it is a very small, tight course, often close to the shore or sea wall.'

Robertson sees similarities between the team work skills required in Powerboat P1 between the person on the throttles and the driver to those needed in sailing.

'Every race is intense and great team work is essential. I think Shelley did really well and reacted quickly to all our commands as we fought our way through the fleet. She was certainly enjoying herself and constantly smiling!'
