Its only one step on from Seabreeze? In any event, my wife says I pay too much attention to Seabreeze at the expense of engaging with the family (and to perthmtb.asn, and coffeesnobs, and yahoofinance etc etc).

And now there is facebook. I have been paying attention to that because my daughter was approaching it. She turned 13 the other day and is onto it.

So I am really interested in the 'rules' of keeping out of trouble in the online space.

My advice to her has been:

. don't go too fast - nobody wants a gazillion posts from the one poster at any one time - make each post add value and count (in other words, only say something when you have something useful to say)
. don't get personal about yourself - only post fluff - its a substitute for the telly - and remember, one day, your chances for a job will depend on how 'appropriate' your next post is and what it tells about your psychology
. never personally criticise anyone else - don't contribute to someone else's misery.

I must say, I have found it quite fun. I enjoy reading other 'friends' posts about quirky things they find on the net, or seeing their latest Instagram photo, etc

The amount of old in this thread is astonishing.

"Oh it's new (in your mind), I don't like it."
"Oh I believe everything in the media, so I don't like it."
"Oh something bad happened to someone who has a Facebook account, I don't like it"
"I don't know how to use it for my benefit and don't want to learn, so I don't like it."

Keep the onions tied on to your belts fellas.

One of the greatest avenue for international criminal minded people to gather data on all levels
Might take a while to build a profile on XYZ, but over a 12-18 month span, its surprising what people will document about themselves and family. Doesn't take too long to fit the jigsaw together, or join the dots for a real scam to be activated.
Ran a class on what people could find out about others, just using Facebook over three months. Was scary on what was unearthed
Use this mode of social interaction with great trepidation. Not all on this media system are nice people
Face book is

Facebook's epic! Here's why:

1) keep up to date with mates wherever they are.
2) keep up to date with said mates missus' photos
3) I 'like' a bunch of science sites that post up a bunch of info regularly. Did you know that Mole Rats are resistant to cancer? I learnt that this morning!
4) Store photos
5) during footy season keep up to speed on who's in/out injuries, reserve sides etc
6) loose ya phone...no stress
7) good for a laugh
8) no old pricks having a whinge on there

It seems to me that those that are anti-facebook really don't understand its ins and outs and what its possibilities really are.

Rudebeef has a good handle on it.

But it's also a feed of information. With more and more corporations, community groups, interest groups especially in the surfing industry moving towards facebook marketing with Facebook pages and posts, it gives you a constant feed of information. It's essentially like and RSS Feed system for everything that you 'like'.

I have pretty much every surfing corp added to mine as well as Surfers, Surfing Photographers, Action groups such as the "Save our spit" guys from all over the world. All linked in my facebook and I am never short or out of date.

right now I have in my FB feed
-a post from Volcom Stone about an upcoming super grom.
-PT (Peter Townend) has a surfing post
-Surfing NSW posting about the BL blast off
-Numerous posts of epic surf photos from Photographers in Bondi, Byron, Hawaii, WA...etc.
-Surf Vid from Runanuk Visuals
-Another surf vid from DailySurf
-A few boobs thrown in from Monster Children and Velvet Sea for good measure

Its never a dull moment on my feed and also worth a read when I get a spare moment.

I also have my Nan who lives on the other side on the country on mine and she loves it. She gets to keep 'in touch' we give her regular updates on her great grandkids, we get to converse through messages and chat. Before Spazbook the only correspondance between us was Birthday cards and the end of year family update letter Mum sends out.

Learn it and you might be surprised.

Thats not saying i disagree with fingerbone. Those people posting about being sick or when they are having a dump, or bragging where they are with a check-in etc etc. This stuff is pretty lame.

(1) fkn yay. If it is important they will tell me. I don't feel the need to follow my mates' every move.
(2) wow. gawk at mate's missus. Noble and charming.
(3) I "like" science sites so when I try to pick up online chicks think I am smart. That's cheating, learn to lie to chicks in person old school style
(4) Store photos. Cos FB is the most secure storage media. OK......
(5) Footy updates. Like the back page of the paper has.....?
(6) Loose phone? you lost me
(7) Lamebook is way better
(8) No nothing bad ever happens there.

I agree its lazy and slack. And there is ALOT of crap on there. And whinging. And attention seeking. And idiots. And people taking pictures of their dinner, and the dog, and my friend's sisters cousin's new baby. And duckfaces. And trolls. Your ex's stalk you. People you dont know want to be your friend. I cant believe i put up with all of that $h!+ but its easy to meet up with chicks (from school, an old crush, your exs best friends). But i'm slack and lazy.

I remember a time when...........

Web - was something a spider made
Website - where the spider decided to make his web
Inbox - what you do to stuff when you move house
Virus - a cold or a nasty rash from some girl
Windows - we looked out of them
Log on - what you did to make a fire
On line - Where the washing went
Mouse - what the cat ate
Keyboard - used to make music
Hotmail - the letterbox is on fire
Yahoo - calling out to your mate
Google - what you did when you saw boobs

Them were the days.

Surf - in the f***ing water!

^^ Sarchasm (noun): the huge gap between the author of sarcistic wit and the person who just does not get it.

No offence intended, just taking the chance to use what I think should be a real word....
