but can I ask some of the local Cairns Kiters how much they know about Green Island kiting?
You cannot beat Green Island for consistent and strong winds. When I windsurfed (before I saw the light and changed to kiting....) we used to go every weekend. The ferry company, Great Adventures, gave us season passes: $120 for 25 trips!!!! Most of us would go through two passes a year, so it worked out to be about $4:50 a trip!!!!!!! Now we do not go as often because of the cost, $45 for a local.
The problem now is that we normally have clear skies and good wind and Yorkies is fairly consistent (you listening Huey!!!), but I must admit this year has been very ordinary. It is raining now as it has been the past month and the locals are going stir crazy with lack of wind. What is worse is that Yorkies has nothing yet Green Island is going off its tits.
When kiting Green, the best area is on the SE corner, but this area is tide dependant. Anything below a 1.2m tide and it becomes too shallow and dangerous. On incoming or higher tides it is great, plus you remain upwind of the island and if you do experience trouble you can drift back onto the Island. Problem with the higher tides is launching etc can be a bit of a handful. I would also recommend saying g'day to the guys at the beach hire on the NE corner a let them know what you are up to as they are good lads and will keep an eye out for you. Plus they can tell you the best area to kite. Certainly keep away from the jetty side of the Island and away from the beach hire area (wind shadow there anyway.)
I am on holidays for most of july/aug/sept to kite yorkies and I would be keen for a few trips to Green, so say g'day when you get here and I would gladly help out where I can. I ride a green/red slingy fuel (can't miss those colours!!!!!!) and can be found at Yorkies pretty much any day wind is forecast for the next couple of months.
****, I have really babbled on.......apologies!
Cheers
