it is coming to perth again around october. lasts years was awesome in the way it was run and the money that went into it. i heard they are probally going to have it at the same spot. which was glared out , to far out and choppy as. no good for spectators and definately no good for riders. they said it was for tv but they didnt have a camera out there until the final heat with balls v ruben. it we can put some ideas down it could be like a petition and we can submit this topic to them so we can see guys on the pro tour come over again. i think WOODIES WOODIES WOODIES. flat water right in your face. 10 minites from freo have sliders set up kickers set up . it was run well but non kiters choosing a venue didint work. even scarborough beach(contacios end down wind of swimmers for a comp) flat water and waves and a heaqp of spectators would be watching. put thoughts down but woodies , evertone likes woodies

It would be a crime to have it in the same spot i was judging an can tell you that we needed binoculars to tell what the guys were doing how good then is it for spectators????

Rys right WOODIES is the best place we have already tested kickers there an it was perfect we could have kickers/sliders at the far end then the freestyle part about 1/2 metre from you face:-) Cant wait to see the sick **** Rubens going to pull in the flat water:-)

last year if you wanted to come down to the beach and check out the kiteing at the gravity games i thought it was **** there was no food no drink no kite displays and you couldnt even see the action going off on the water. so what was the point in coming down last year????
woodys would be a sick spot to have the games for the riders but i think it might be too small for so many people.

wouldnt it be cool if we could talk the cott coulcil into letting us use the area out the front of the tea house for a week. all the facilitys you could ever need, heaps of room and parking, sick spot to film and great exposure for the sport.
but that will probably never happen

I would have to agree with Damo, Cott. would be the place as nothing really happens there anyway. A great piece of coastline, with viewing and party fascilities to boot and it is deadsville..........no people here. Woodies is a great place to kite, but really no infrastructure for the fans there.

Having a major kiting event at Cott. would be very good for the local image and business. Kiting all day with foam parties at night.........come on Perth get with the program.

andyc and I spoke with Ian Young last year during the games (he was the competition director for the kitesurfing part, i think?) He said that Mosman Park was the only council that would allow the gravity games to set up along their 10m stretch of coastline.

But maybe Ian can further clarify here...

Ian Young was the technical director for the GG last year and despite all his advice and suggestions against holding it at that location he was over ridden . Money talks .
I think a petition is a good idea as it will give Ian ammo this time around .
Also pretty sure Tracy is right that no other councils were keen to give permission .

I agree Woodies clearly offers the best conditions for the kiters but isn't ideal regards spectators, infrastructure and accessability.

Has Mullalloo Beach ever been considered, and has their council been approached? The waves are decent there when there's swell. Regardless of swell size there are clean sections between the waves and a nice flat bit on the inside reminiscent of Wedge. The Surf Club area has a kiosk and public toilets. Hillarys as a tourist attraction for spectators and night time party spot is just down the road. Admittedly accommodation isn't so easy but there are options at Hillarys and B&Bs.

Regardless, the petition is a good idea and I'll put my name on it if we can agree on some suitable and viable spots to suggest. I wandered down last GG to take a look but cos viewing was so poor and the wind was blowing I went kiting at Leighton with everyone else instead!

as much as a petition would be good ammo, im pretty sure the location, dates and basically everything for this years gravity games is already set in stone...

having said that petitions etc might help the 2006 event be in a better location.

also, fyi, cameras were on site for almost all heats afaik... to the point that start times were held up on one or two days until the camera crews arrived... most of the filming was taken from in front of the judging area

and damos spot on about spectator presence... there was nothign to attract them :(

Leighton Beach was fine last year, but just have the contest area where the warm up spot was. The beach break and view for spectators is fine. The contest area out to sea sucked.

So in other words all they got was tiny distant black figures sillhouetted against the shiny silver on the water of the setting sun. aka Blot! Nada!, Nil, Nuttin!, SFA!, Zip!, Donut!, and bugger all.

I also stopped by just to check out the action and after a few moments couldnt see who was who or what they were doing so used the time to catch up with old mates.

Really poor spot for kiting when thinking of public interest and facilities. Hope we can do better next year

cott would be alright but it will never happen with everything that went on their last year. WOODIES WOODIES WOODIES. it is the best spot for flat water kiting and spectators can watch from within metres of the competitors. if it is going to be in the same spot then have it right in front of the tent so u can at least see it. if u ever go down the beach when do you ever see kiters kiting back and forth half way to rotto.NEVER, well thats what gravity games 04 was like. and from a safety side of things u couldnt even come straight in coz it was dry reef. u had to tack up wind after a heat in 12knts. who wants to do that after a heat. and then u finally get back and they say get back out there (nearly rotto ) ya next heat starts in 2 minutes. I reckon woodies or straight in front of the red bull tent.....

Last year or it could've been the beginning of the year the old boys had a Malibu comp at the top of Isos. They set up tents, had sponsors selling goods, cool 60's music and even a massage booth. I recond that spot is gold especially to introduce kiteboarding to the public. If they allowed that, they shouldnt have a problem with any comps going on there.

Woodies would be a good choice from a competitor's point of view, if not a spectator's one and provides options in any wind direction, which is unique to Woodies on the whole coast. Northerlies or Easterlies could still be competed and shot for TV. I thought they were pretty lucky last year to get 3 days of reasonable sea breeze at that time of year, as the rest of October was pretty shocking. Imagine a straight easterly at Leighton! On the down side and it is a major downside, it is miles from the road with little parking, no elevation for the cameras and a long way from civilisation in general.

Cott Main would be perfect in terms of logistical support and may just be a possibility. Local elections are about to revamp cott council and the new council should at least be approached with the idea. Tony Sheppard was the councillor appointed last year to legislate for Kiting and was very reasonable. October starts the hard-board surfing ban at Cott, but is really a bit early for most swimmers and definitely not peak season and it would actually bring a bit of much needed life to the beach at that time of year. The council have shown a recent interest in using the beach for showcase events such as the 'beach boys' concert and 'sculpture by the sea'. The groin would be A1 for spectators and cameraman alike allowing angles away from the Westerly glare. It also gives wind shelter at beach level and could make the whole event a huge success for spectators

Last year was shocking, any spectators there were just focused on the warm-up zone. We can definitely do better than that and I am prepared to volunteer to approach Cott council if asked, but who is actually organising it? The professionalism shown by the organisers of the Nationals shows that kiting can really be mainstream at an event like this, and get all the organisational stuff together. Surely if the local residents can put up with a rock concert they can put up with a kiting event for a few hours each afternoon in early spring.

Tim Thirsk is the man u got to speak to. IF u could have it on the north side of the big groin at cott in front of indianas then that would be insane and i would retract my previous statements. good luck with cott council. im pretty sure that time of year surfers are allowed to surf there so they might be able to close the beach for a couple a days.....

I have asked Tim Thirsk to reply to this thread.

I do know that it is getting very close for him to have to lock everything in place, but probably still not too late.

Tim was looking at a heap of different venues - most of them not great for competitors or spectators - unfortunately whether you like it or not, the people Tim has to satisfy first are the sponsors and the WA Govt. I have always recommended Woodies but Tim says that this is unacceptable to the sponsors. I undertood that City of Cott said no last year but not sure if Tim has asked again for 2005.

Another option that Tim and I discussed was off the Western end of Herrison Island (Causeway) directly opposite the wakeboarding venue. I test flew the site in a WSW and it was cleaner air than I thought it would be and seemed like it could keep most people happy. Spectators from McCallum Park would be able to see some action and those that wanted to get close can access Herrison Island on foot. The water was pretty flat - especially in the lee on the NW corner. We would need to setup and launch and recovery area - Tim was thinking a slip-proof ramp over the existing ****ty beach.

What do people think?

A petition might help but it would be most effective if it comes under a WAKSA letterhead.

I await Tim Thirsk's reply with interest but Ian Youngs idea of moving it into the city is not bad and would certainly suit spectators nad gel the evnt together. Maybe a river option should be accessible in the days leading to the event in case we get forecast strong easterlies.

it was light enough without going and getting lighter winds on the river. why not just where everyone warmed up that would be cool. at least there is waves to hit and ride and u dont have to tack back and forth up wind. good for spectating and i think it is the same shire?

No problems Ryland - you sign off on the safety then :-)

With suicide leashes, reef, rocks and updrafts on the cliffs downwind of that spot?????

It's always fun until someone loses an eye as they say. As soon as something goes wrong people always look for someone to blame. At the end of the day the comp area has to be safe.

I thought it was 'it's all fun and games until someone gets pregnant'? Herrison sounds good, but with the dubious wind that time of year? Ryland has a good point. I'd sign a petition for Cott (if I were in the area to do so).

if safety is such a big concern why did we have to kite back up wind after a heat. WHY COZ OF THE HUGE ROCKS DOWN WIND. personally why would we get any if those pros come over and kite their again. besides the fact they are throwing a heap of money up 4 grabs its not the most enviting location. mullaloo scarbs trigg woodies pinnaroo leighton are all a heap better. if they are putting so much time and money into the event at least put it in a spot where it would be money well spent. it is the biggest thing to come to australia and we stick aaron hadlow 500m out to sea and say go rip it up in 2m chop. it aint all that hard.

I like the idea of Cott in front of the Tea House, that would have to be the most appealing to competitors, audience, film crew and the local business. I agree with Ry that there was reefs, rocks and cliffs all downwind of the JZ at cables. There is half as much reef, no rocks and half the height cliffs which are only sand dunes at Cott. Thats got to be more positive on the safety issue. And at the end of the day there's the Cott pub across the road.

Hey Guys,

It's not the businesses you have to win over it's the hoity toity residents that don't want change or unruly young people coming to disturb their morning coffee at the Tropicana or heaven forbid they should have to line up to get the morning paper.

Council is also deathly afraid that we may invade peoples civil liberties by denying them access to their fave swimming beach (especially the rich vocal oldies), not to mention god forbid, a local being injured by a failed suicide leash letting a kite go onto the beach during a comp.

I'm sure the businesses would be all for it, however it's the residents that pay the rates and the ratepayers cast the votes and that's what council wants.

It's pointless getting hundreds of kiters saying "Yeah! Cott rocks, lets have it at Cott", because we have no impact on their revenue or voting in the council elections. Win the ratepayers, assure the councilors of absolute safety, get the comp site!

Think about it, if you were a councillor who maybe just scraped in during the last election, would you risk a cushy fat job by allowing a bunch of aquatic misfits to take over a popular stretch of beach with a dangerous extreme sport ..... I wouldn't, would you?

Are you guys serious?
Gravity Games at Cottesloe?? (fake laugh)
I vote 1 for Gnaraloo Station to be the venue.

Isn't this event all about extremes and the cutting-edge of this gay sport.
Forget all about spectator numbers, bums on seats,6 O'clock news grabs, infrastructure and fast-food outlets.
This is the 21st century and media rules. The camera tells the story now. Marketing is God.

Why do you reckon the surfing tour goes to venues like G-Land, Teahupoo, St Leu and the like.......not because of all the punters who bought family tickets to see the show.

G'day Ry

Tim Thirsk here mate! Mosman Beach is definitely out of the question and we have been granted input into the venue; Ian kite Herrison Island which providing there is wind was pretty good so that is our first choice venue and all going well will be set up with as park style riding with kickers and sliders. Back up venue is Woodies. i am keeping my eye on how things pan out at Octagon as there have been many changes in the management there so all going well we will get out way.

please stay in contact with me or Ian for up dates.

best regards

I would have to defer to what KH has to say about this subject. It is a sad state of affairs when an outback, isolated place like Perth (which could actually make a name for itself and some foreign currency to boot from this cool new sport) can't find it in itself to put on a show at Cottesloe because of the "government." In the government I include all those on the land grab/primary industry gravy train....no value add, just sit on the asset....boring!

The rich and famous don't want change. They want us all to look at them only and no one is to have more fun in their back yard then they themselves....because they were there first and own it.............WA does mean wait a while though, so I believe they will wake up to the modern world some day, .........and as I have said before.....get with the program Perth. "Extreem" sports like kiting are the future for so many young and bright people....come on you sad old men and women of the "goverment," free yourselves up a little and let it happen at Cottesloe

Perhaps Cottesloe could take a lesson from the town of St. Moritz, Switzerland. This little place has really become the home of the rich and famous and it embraces "extreem sports" and has so for hundreds of years. The "crazy" British first came to St. Moritz to ski and sled, and they built the world's first Skeleton Course (where you go head first down a bob sled run on a little sled with lead weights). Today St. Moritz is one of the kiting meccas in Europe as well as many many other "extreem" sports. This town makes millions and millions embracing change and youth. The rich and famous of St. Moritz like to have entertaining stuff to look at.

Now, I bet there are a few councilors who would first schedule a little trip to Switzerland to check it out and learn how they do it. Don't spend the dollars on flights and hotels...just do it here in Perth and do it properly. It will be good for your real estate assetts too.

VOTE 2: Cottesloe: the most valuable real estate in WA..what a great opportunity for the town!.....for SW winds.

AND...some good River spot for Easterlies....a real Perth kite fest...still dreaming about having the first Australian foam parties in this great city of ours.

WA is VERY conservative and you may have to "WAIT QUITE AWHILE. It is both the beauty and the bane of living on the sunset coast. I love Perth and WA and wouldn't want to live anywhere else, but I still cant believe we just voted on extended trading hours and it was defeated OMG! , cmon WA!

I would love to see a referendum on Daylight savings too, but after hearing some of the talkback on the radio from WA residents about their concerns of the changes DS would bring, I was wondering if they were even ringing from the same planet, let alone the same state.

So considering we can't even get something like DS or Extended hours shopping passed that would be good for this state, what chance do we have in getting something like a kiting event at a well known location with excellent facilities? HA!

I fear we will all be waiting a very long while

God we badly need some wind!

Cant wait 4 the Gravity games 05, there going to be sick!! i think the main problem that every person seems to be over looking, is the fact tthat out of everyone involved in the games, that the sponsors have to be satisified first.
No offence to all the previous postings, but even though Woodies would be the ideal place to hold it, i do not think many spectators etc would be heading out that way...Shame, they dont know what their missing out on..
If you help it at the cause way that would be ace, but poses many threats..
At the end of the day it has to be at a place that can satisify; wheatther conditions, safety spectators and sponsors blah blah blah...
Hopefully it has better viewing than last year
