yes there is an alternative thing to do insurance wise is to join the Geelong Kite Club, they will cover land based screw ups, and race cover also if that way inclined

YES. Public liability insurance is a good thing! Get sued with out it and you'll never have a new kite again let alone the essentials.

Windmill, the insurance is a crock. They don't pay up. At least NSWKBA don't.

I agree PL insurance IS a good idea however it is NOT personal injury insurance. My point being that other National associations (BKSA for instance) provide for personal injury insurance, AKSA do not.

Personally I would not mind paying $100 / $200+ per year for AKSA membership if they provide personal injury insurance. AKSA could even implement a sliding scale of membership fee based upon the individuals level of cover required. BKSA do this, it CANT be that hard and there is A PROFIT to be made!

To claim that kiters are fully insured without personal injury insurance in the context of other National associations is a misrepresentation of the facts. AKSA need to use the clout of membership numbers to convince the risk adverse insurance companies of the benefits of full cover to members.

Until then......

I wonder how many more members would join up if personal injury insurance was offered as part of the package? Just a thought!

Still waiting to be paid for a claim on an incident that happened last November. I'm out of pocket some $2000, with no resolution in the foreseeable future. However, this morning I have received an email from NSWKBA, so stay tuned.

Sue me for ANYTHING , and you'll never see a red cent!.....

Not that I'm broke...far from it....

Just some very good asset protection planning can alleviate any of your stress on that side of things..

Want to know more?

Just like my tax tips and my hedge fund tips, you'll never get the chance to read about them, because I'll get booted!

AKSA don't pay out a cent. They actually make money on a % per premium and an increase in membership.

OK I will explain the principals of insurance s l o w l y

You pay a premium membership so that AKSA arranges 'group' insurance with a major insurance company. If you get injured then the insurance company pays out for your medical treatment. Under this deal the pay out is usually limited to a dollar amount per type of injury.

Check out the BKSA insurance page: http://www.britishkitesurfingassociation.co.uk/bksa-membership/insurance-policy.html

It seems the British can get cover but Australians can't.

Makes you feel proud to be a true blue mug does it?

No.

I'm pretty ambivalent about insurance in general, and from what I've seen and heard so far AKSA/KBV have a ways to go in providing value for money.

I certainly try to minimise risk by checking my gear regularly, following simple and safe launching/landing routines, keeping out of the way of kooks and not going out if the gusts are over 35 knots.

If cover becomes more comprehensive and if I hear good stories of satisfied claimants I'll consider joining.

I was under the impression that by paying an state association fee you received a public liability policy from the national association.

Last I checked, a public liabilty policy covers personal and property damage as a result of me smashing them with a kite. Pretty sure that my injuries aren't covered nor are the injuries to another kiter that I smash.

The IKO policy is the same. Just a PL policy underwritten by some multinational insurer.
