Seeking information about the Tiger Shark encounter at Noosa.
My understanding is that Josh - the owner of the Noosaville Kite Shop was kiting with a mate from the mouth of the Noosa River towards Tea Tree Bay when a drop in wind strength caused their kites to fall to the water. Allegedly during this time a Tiger Shark of large proportion circled them moving in closer on each completed circle. It was reported to me that if it was not for the intervention of some Lifesavers training on the beach, Noosa would no longer have the services of the Kite Shop owner.
Can anyone confirm the validity of this alleged encounter.

ps. UBER, I believe you are the resident SHARK HUNTER on the forum - are you able to shed any light on this issue.

awaiting with interest
many thanks

Yep I can tell u it is fact. Spoke with Josh who said it happened and he sh** himself. Says he first saw a shark fin right in the mouth of the river where most blokes kite. Is wondering if it was the same bugger who circled him when he dropped his kite. He said it wouldn't have been great publicity for his shop if he had been eaten. ( this bloke has a great sense of humour )
Thing is, it certainly puts a damper on kiting the river mouth. Oh well , I guess it will keep the tourists off the water leaving more space for the locals who kite with the sharks on a regular basis.
OR maybe it could be an opportunity for an enterprising individual to market the battery powered shark leash.
Anyone got experience with the leash.

Shark leashes work....very,very well. A good investment (once you get used to shocking yourself on the leash during early days)

I'm not into shark stories, but we have our fair share of first hand stories up here from guys/girls who work with sharks around them every day. They swear by them.

Yes i have shark shield works really well you get a few belts every now and again but thats a good thing as you know its working away. I do most of my kiting in south australia , and it is the home of the great white so the leash does not bother me at all , you can jump with it, do backrolls forward rolls its all good.Although we all know the chances of being taken are very small , having the shield on gives you that extra bit of confiedence when things go wrong a long way of shore and you have a big swim in, it could very well save your life.

I just came back from an adventure weekend run by 5 SAS soliders. One of them was a diving specialist and I asked him if they ever encounter sharks and whether he had heard of the shark shield. He had. He said they use them whenever they're in shark infested waters and he loves it. He's had occasions when he's had a pack of sharks swimming 8m below him and he didn't have to worry about it.

They electrocute your ankles, numbing the central nervous system, creating a false sense of security and confidence. They have worked in 100% of cases, no kiters with shark leashes have ever been eaten by sharks! "It could very well save your life" or the electric shocks could disturb your heart rhythms, leading to heart failure and drowning. Then sharks will feed on your bloated corpse......

Thanks for the responses fellas.
15 to 25 NE , I take my hat off to you South Aussies.Given kiting is one of the great adrenalin rush sports, I figure the added bonus of kiting with the Great Whites must really pump you. Happy sailing.

For starters they dont electrocute your ankles, electrocution can only be caused when electrical current passes through your body the shark shield does not do that. The only time you will feel a small sensation is when your front foot has the leash attached to it and the leash may touch your back leg.I have also used it when i go spearfishing , have seen sharks approach me while i have speared a fish , with the shark shield working away its like they hit a invisible brick wall , they turn around and go in the other direction very quickly. You can pick up the leashes from any dive shops, they retail for about 600.00 dollars.

Well I guess kiting where we do, their is the added danger of great whites, but in saying that have kited around numerous pods of dolphins seen whales out their while i have kited, which makes it all worth it.And best of all 99.9 percent of kiters are a great bunch of people.

How big is the tiger you keep spotting.

This is to you UBER THE SHARK HUNTER , do you wear a shark leash since you are so worried about sharks.I think it worries everyone some more than others, and it has probably crossed everyones mind when kiting a long way of shore.

Andris, all the reading I've done says it bull sharks (bronze whalers) which will go into rivers. I've not read anything that says Tiger sharks go upstream. I've kited at Pelican Point for several years and been frightened of my own shadow sometimes but no shark. Besides there's barely enough water to kite in.

But I'm interested. What, who, when was this report?

Massive Great White seen at Woodies last night, about 4.30pm on the south side of the groyne. Just as the seabreeze kicked in! What a bummer!

Does the Shark Shield zapper repel dolphins as well ?

How about seals ?

Or is it just a fish repeller ?

I think the navy has the dolphin and whale zapper!
Sharks can sense the electric pulses generated by contracting muscles.
"The shark's "sixth sense" is electroreception, the ability to sense weak electric fields. Although humans build devices that detect electric fields, we do not feel the presence of weak fields around us. Sharks not only sense these fields but also rely on them to locate prey and, perhaps, navigate through the ocean.
The receptors responsible for detecting these weak electric fields are concentrated in the shark's head at the base of tiny, jelly-filled canals over the shark's snout and lower jaw and around the eyes. Dark pores on the skin's surface mark the external openings to these sensory structures, which are called ampullae of Lorenzini. The ampullae contain nerve cells that respond to very faint electric stimuli."

So basically you're poking it in the electric eye with a sharp stick.

Wind has been honking up north. Everyone talking about shark incident at Noosa. Seems quite a few Southerners coming up for kiting are avoiding the rivermouth. Thats OK for locals but would be a shame to miss out on the glorious flat water in the river mouth just on the off chance you may encounter a flesh eater. No sign of the Tiger since the Josh incident although a few local fishermen claim many shark sightings a few clicks off Laguna Bay.
Hey Uber whats the shark situation down south - any recent sightings.

Just received an SMS from a mate doing the big kite trip across South Aussie to WA. He said he had just come in from a kite on a beach somewhere on the Bite and saw a sign he hadn't seen when he first went in.
Apparently the beach is notorious for Great White sightings.
As he walked from the water he saw this sign that said DON'T GO IN THE WATER DUE TO SHARKS and just next to it was a memorial for a surfer who had been eaten by a Great White. Needless to say ,my mate was a little unsettled by the info given that he had spent a lot of time in the water as he had been practicing new tricks.
Is South Australia really that crook for sharks.
