can someone tell me why people wear boardies outside of their wettie? I've done it skiff sailing to stop my wettie getting ripped/worn on cleats etc but why do it kiting? Is it a fashion thing or practical in some way..

its to stop your wettie from catching on the helium cannister when you're pumping up your kite.

it's all about fashion, mate. I've just gone and bought a nice off-the shoulder taffeta ballgown to wear over my wettie on the weekend...can't wait to try it out

I dont get it either, probably the same as young guys wearing boxers under boardies, whats the point.

Imagine a surfer wearing boardies over a wet suit!

If you can't keep your eyes off of it, it's about time you got yourself a girlfriend/boyfriend… or considered some therapy.

Just keep telling yourself “I’m here to kite, not look at dicks”… “I’m here to kite, not look at dicks”… “I’m here to kite…” It must be working for most people because I haven’t noticed too many kiters kooking out at the local spots, and there’s lots of dicks there!

I have the perfect boardies.

actually it's a pair of undershorts in Italian colors whith an image of that famous sculpture David's family jewels.

if I wear that over my wettie and my seat harness over it. It should be a conversation starter at the very least.

i just can't wear it at Stkilda, or near Bow kiters.

if your kiteing in a place with cold water, and blazing hot sun, you don't wont a black wetsuit on , but unfortunately they are all black, by putting a lighter coloured pair of shorts and rashy on you will be miles cooler from the burning sun, and warm for the water

right on leski...if the water's cold enough to warrant a wettie, then any "blazing hot sun " is a bonus in keeping warm, yeah?
next we'll hear that the rashies/boardies over the wetties are to stop the rubber from melting during massive, upper atmosphere boosts.

Its like the jeans hanging off the ass, boxer shorts showing prisoner look. I mean they did it because they arent allowed to wear belts in prison, and as they lose weight their pants fall down.
People who do it deliberately look absolutely ridiculous and trying to express themselves as being someone else rather than just being themselves.
Not sure why some kiters wear shorts over a wetty, but for the insecure I guess it provides confidence. Or just an attempt at a fashion statement. Each to there own, but when I'm wearing my wetty the last thing on my mind is whether or not someone else is steering at my mid-region. That is ridiculous and immature! I mean your privates are covered by 2 to 3mm of rubber for goodness sake! Not 20 microns of latex.

I must admit I nearly kooked-out when I saw a middle aged newbie at a local beach... waist harness, impact vest, and a multi-coloured flouro speedo proudly displayed under the "large veranda".

At first I thought he had lost his shorts body-dragging... but nooooo, this was as good as it was going to get. It's hard to laugh hystericaly with a kite in the air but, I just couldn't help myself, not after all these kind of posts on numerous websites and mag's.

It was so surreal and shockingly real all at once!

Is that the future of kiting?

Please, if your reading this, don't be offended... but FOR GAWDSAKE PUT SOME BLOODY PANTS ON!!!

Boardies over wetties is far better than just wearing speedos! That thought is going to give me nightmares! I agree, for the sake of others and to avoid doing injury to your privates, cover up. I tried wearing boardies with nothing underneath, but after a case of nasty ball slap after stacking a landing, I changed to boxer briefs under the shorts!

Think of it as wearing a wetsuit UNDER your boardies.

Actually its also a badge of honor.
It shows two things:

You are self confident and don't give a rat's ass about what all the kooks think about you.

You are a highly profficient kiter.

You have to be at a certain level in the pecking order to wear boardies like this.
So,if you are a newbie or a hopeless kook, you CAN NOT wear boardies like this.

If you have "issues" and are worried about what others think, you CAN NOT wear boardies this way.

Hope this clears it up.

If you look hard enough its not hard to figure out. There are unwritten laws that must be obeyed.

The dakine Nitrous harness is built into a set of boardies. I recently bought one as the shop didnt have the dakine fusion harness - this was the closest thing to that and i was in a hurry.

On the good side the harness works great. The hook stays low with very little ball breakage problem. Great flexibility.

On the bad side it looks like you are wearing a pair of boardies over the wetty.

personally, I don't really give a crap what anyone elso thinks....I'd rather feel cooler in summer on the days i decide to wear a full length wetti and a white rashy which stops the sun from cooking me when i go out kiting for 3 hours plus and stopps my arse getting ripped in half by landing hard not in a pair of boardies.

I recon all the kiters on this post that laugh at the idea of wearing anything over a wetsuit are about image, those who have an opinion are trying to justfy either why they do or don't do it......
but really how many times have people on here been out kiting in winter and had a TINY ammount of sun and ever in their lives complained about being hot be it aftewr 30 minutes or six hours ....... believe me , if you put a white rashy on it will make a MASSIVE difference if your wearing a black steamer , sure in antarctica you might need the full effects of a 2/3 sealed black wettie , but in australia you rearely do
