Getting back to "Class 6 Rules."
Class 6 does open up the design perameters. There is no limit on materials! I see I could just reduce my Class 5 trolly by 10%, add carbon tube mast and axils and I'd be a Class 6.
Sounds a bit like the class 3 / class 4 saga in NZ. Just put on a smaller sail and you can enter two classes and get more race time.
I do like the sound of the Aus Class 6 rules. I could build a very fast light yacht using those rules.
Problem is it would just be a slightly smaller class 5. I may as well stick to what I've got.
The NZ "Mini Class" rules I remember were based on the Blokart size.(has anyone got a copy of those?) .
I dont see any reason for class 6 or class 4 while the numbers sailing are at there present level. But there may be some people that would like to build to those class 6 rules and I say go for it. You never know, you might create another popular class like the Blokart is.

The current (Class 6) specs and design principle are simple…

1. Max width 1.8m overall
This is to enable small yachts to be easily transported and stored.
2. Max length of 2.25m (to the outside of the wheels) excluding the seat
This is to level out some of the yachts, as many different wheels have been tried from small sack truck size to 20” BMX bike wheels.
3. Max sail Area 4.25sqm
4.25 sqm has found to be safe and sufficient for learners, women & children
4. No moving seat
This is to simplify design and for safety
5. No covering OVER the pilot.
This to provide little chance of being trapped inside a yacht. [/b] 6. Round section mast only
Of any material
7. NO sail fairings in or on the sail

Does rule 5 rule out an OTT frame? We have a similar rule in class 5 that "the Pilot shall be visable from above". The OTT frame on my class 5 would have "little chance of trapping me inside". Surely roll over protection would be more critical!
(ask Aus230 about that one)
Rule 5 would also prevent Blokarts entering class 6 as it has part of the frame covering the body.

Clemco,
It seems that the class6 rules may no longer apply, the rules it seems have been replaced by these rules..... although NO OFFICIAL notifiaction has come from ALSA.
This is a copy posted a few weeks ago.

These rules were based on a small group in NALSA.(North American Land Sailing Assn.)
There are some odd things in them like weight limits.
If you have a close look at all the figures the most practical division if the Mini rules would be M3 chassis, and with a change of sail it could be sailed as M3,M2 or M1.
If you built a specific M2 or M1 yacht it couldn't be sailed in the class below it as the physical size would be to big regardless of sail size.
M3 fits the size of the Lefroy Mini and Blokart with the appropriate sails.
M2 and M1 I feel would be to big for carparks and beginners to landsailing.

You are correct that the class6 rules did allow for building of great small yachts its just a pitty that people were more concerned about the maxium dimensions rather than the overall concept of the class.

problem solved dont build a OTT frame the rules are clear, but there will always be some body that will try to get around them.

I agree with you Gizmo.
I dont know why you guys want to sail minis anyway, when you have so much S_P_A_C_E to sail on those salt lakes! Minis are probably more suited to the beaches around here. At least I have more room to add on ballast in my class5.

I see no problem with the rules the Sandgropers have put up. They put there hand up to run the event , (not an easy job) so let them run it to the rules they want.
(When you come to Ohope you sail Ohope Rules.) If I can make it to the event I would rather sail Class 5 (Fisly) which is the only other class listed in the event.

The probem is one of convenience. I can arive at the lake, get 3 mini off the roofrack, set up and sail on any of the good spots that are available on the lake.
some times you have to check the "patches " to find the best combination of wind , salt, and access.OK we're spoilt
If I take Vindicator out(cl3 size ) I need a huge chunk of lake, a mate eo help rig and derig( had every body go home once , and I had to camp at the lake till somebody came along to help derig) add 1.5hr clean up when you get home........
They are just soooo convenient and quick to rig

I think what we need is a larger yacht like class 5 size yacht that packs down to an airline bagage size. They are just as quick to rig once the frame is assembled. Maybe it could be a CLASS 6. Only 10% smaller than my class 5 but LESS RULES.

Sounds like you need a Dave VO class5

Quote David: "Built by David Rose, easy to transport because it is in thre sections
the seat is removed and secured by four bolts to the frame work.
The Mast has five rake postion.floppy steering very fast land Yacht.
The name of rhe land yacht is called Dave`VO Class Five."

I just realised my LLF Mini plan, the overall length including wheels is 2.1m.
I now see what you mean Gizmo.
