Hi guys, I've just had my renewal notice from Club Marine for my Cav. 32 $756.00, is this normal or is there a better deal out there?

Gave Club Marine the flick. Too exy. Their premium went up 30% from the previous year. Now use Pantaenous.

Will Pantaenous pay when a claim is put in? Insurance is only good if they pay up. A cheap premium is like saving money buying too little rope to do the job. It achieves very little if you ever need to use the rope.

I have had 2 significant claims with Club Marine and have no complaints.
Also have had 2 no fault car claims with Allianz (Club Marine ) no issues and no excess or loss of ncb.

I've never had any bad reports about Pantaenius and they were first recommended to me by one of your mates (acquaintances) who I met at Lord Howe for the 2014 BBQ. We got talking about insurance because I had still been waiting for Club Marine to answer my request for insurance while at Lord Howe. I didn't even want insurance for the sail to Lord Howe, but just while I was on the Lord Howe Mooring. But they never got back to me.

Then I got on to Pantaneous for 3rd party (asked Club Marine as well but, still waiting for a reply) when I did my Pacific circuit last year and they were most helpful. And when my renewal notice came from Club Marine in November at the end of last year, I asked Pantaenius for a comprehensive insurance quote and when they saw I still had some 3rd cover left over for the Pacific Circuit cruise, they took that into account and reduced the premium even more. Very Very impressed.

Pantaenius were also recommended to me by other yachties in Mooloolaba.

Have you heard any stories about them MB?

No I haven't. I like the sound of your experience as Club Marine stuffed me around. I don't have insurance outside 200nm.
A track history of paying claims is the key. All other features of insurance companies are irrelevant when they don't pay. I worked in insurance as a consultant and found it a scam of an industry. Some good people but their strategies to avoid paying are drop seated. Is your feedback on Pantaneous about payment of claims or other matters?

Not with boats but a mate has had an horrendous experience over a house claim. Truly appalling efforts to avoid paying out on a claim they accept they are liable to pay. The amount they are willing to pay won't cover a portion of the repairs of their own quotes.

Haven't had to make a claim with them (touch wood) and never asked the other people who recommended Pantaenius. Didn't think it was my business to ask these sort of questions unless they offered up their personal experiences. Below is a link from Sail world that may interest some readers. My Pantaenius quote was cheaper than the latest Club Marine quote but in saying that it was closer to the pre 30% increase by Club Marine.

Good article Crusoe. Was the person you spoke with at the BBQ my crew mate. If so, he would know what he is talking about as a senior solicitor and barrister, yacht owner and with other sailing interests. We didn't discus insurance, it never came up.
Which yacht did you do the LHI trip on?

I thought it might be the case as they are very competitive in pricing (for when I was looking around for bike cover)...I need to do some shopping around for the boat then

I've had a good run so far with Nautilus Insurance for my 9m timber yacht though I've never made a claim.
I strongly recommend to avoid Trident Insurance at all costs. I never made a claim with them either but they turned out to be very shonky.

Am insured with Pantaenius ... absolutely very happy with them so far. No arguments about location, ... pay racing risk and as far as I am concerned very happy.

Easy to deal with, polite, helpful and most of all patient as I was trying to do it whilst away at work at sea with crappy internet .....

Like accountants and lawyers, when you find one you like .... you hang onto them

Someone ask about YOUI, I am with them 2 years. Damage by cyclon Marcia in February last year
on my boat was about 75% of estimated value. YOUI covered all cost.

Thanks for that info Charriot. YOUI is the agency or broker. Do you know who the underwriter is??

Youi Pty Ltd is an Australian registered company and is a wholly owned subsidiary of OUTsurance International Holdings Pty Limited part of the Rand Merchant Insurance Holdings (RMIH) Group.

That from their web site. Now all you need do is work through who Rand Merchant Insurance Holdings are.

I've been with Nautilus for 5 years, and have been very happy with them. They paid up on a claim for a lost propellor only a month or so after we started with them, with no fuss. They accepted our then-10 year old rig, after an inspection by a rigger. And significantly cheaper than Club Marine (who we'd been with previously).

Youi paid out in full for a mates power boat post crash 25K - 1 quote for repair - no fuss

My powerboat is with them now - 1/2 of club marine premium , 1/3 of Nautilus premium.

When my yacht premium is up for renewal in may, Youi will be my first call.

I went with youi, not only because they were cheapest, but didn't require out of water survey. I offered to send photos but they didn't want them.

The boat is insured fully comp. for a total value of $40,000. It cost just under $1,000 per annum.

Haven't needed to make a claim, I suppose that's when I'll know if it was a good decision.

Hi guys, Had a quote for insurance on my Cav.32 from Pantaenius it was a $35.00 per year more than Club Marine and would have involved a haul out for a marine inspection which would be another $700.

I'll stick with Club Marine.

I am with Tudor as well, I found them on a timber boat website, and found them to be courteous and helpful.
G.I.O. would not continue insurance due to the boat being on a mooring, which is serviced every year, and I found G.I.O. to be fairly incompenent in correcting a mistake THEY made on my policy.
Tudor is also 1/2 the price I was quoted through a broker for Club Marine, who I also had a timber boat with prior to this one, but policy changes means that I had to look elsewhere. I have not had to make a claim, with any of them, hope to stay that way...

I gave Club Marine the flick too, after they starting asking for a survey (Martzcraft 35) before they would renew my policy and got pricey. They did the same for a mate (Hutton 25), he scrapped them too.

Now I have 3rd party only with YOUI. I never thought I would listen to a TV advert. but I did and called them after my mates suggestion. Fast cheap and no problems. Glad I did. Third party only is HUGELY cheaper.

The reason I'm doing the third party only is because I'm keeping an eye on my boat 24/7 with my invention www.trektransponder.com.au. In theory if anything goes wrong with boat I can zip over to it and fix it before it gets drastic.

So far I got alerted to the batteries dying one afternoon. When I went to the boat I found damp slime on bilge pump electronic sensor making it think bilge was flooded so bilge pump was running forever. That saved my batteries and everything at floor level. Another time I got an alert saying bilge was flooded. Which I didn't believe. But I saw the battery volts dropping. So I went to the boat and found the bilge WAS flooded, bilge pump was running but on analysis the bilge pump impeller had broken off. (Two Rule Bilge Pumps now, both same problem).

Another time when the batteries were getting lower and lower. I went to boat and found the Solar Regulator had failed. It wasn't a marine one and the components inside had failed with corrosion. Duh. The next one I bought I sprayed with conformal coating which fixed the problem. Saved batteries again.

If anyone wants to try it SMS the word status to 0435 142 275. Wait 30 seconds and you can see whats happening on my boat in Pittwater NSW. Usually the number is locked to prevent stray SMS but I will leave it open to outside numbers today. If you put the lat and long into Google Earth you can see where it is too.
