note this from the ebay site:
Service May Be Required (i.e. Biocide Treatments, Membrane Replacement)
so for emergency use, it may be a good idea to test first, or get a replacement membrane just in case.

Yeah, Maybe I should have got 2 of them..
One to play with and one to keep for emergencies.
They are not only designed for emergency use, they can be used everyday.
The membrane has a (if I remember correctly) 3000hr usage life.
The membrane is the same as on every-day use desalinators so you could drive it off your boat engine with a pulley and lever arm but you would have to get the revs just right and it would still only make 4.5 liters an hour...
I only run out of water (100 liters in a weekend) if I have a woman onboard.. Ha ha !
They just don't understand that you can't leave the tap running.
I'm pretty sure that it's the same with all desalinators, if you didn't use them for a few months, they will grow algi inside... Unles you treat them with biocide.
On the full-on watermakers, I think they do a fresh water flush when finished for the day. Easy enough to set up a valve to do this too.
The biocide is only $20 anyway, so I think I will just get some.
Recently bought A 55 liter bladder for extra water storage, it makes the most comfortable waterbed ever :-)
From the manual :-
The unit is shipped from the factory with a biocide solution inside, to prevent the growth
of bacteria. After the unit has been operated and before it is stored again, it should be flushed with
biocide as outlined below.
IMPORTANT:
Never let the membrane dry out. Be sure to follow these storage instructions.
1. Turn the unit upside down, with the intake strainer out of the water.
2. Fill a suitable container with about a quart (approximate 1 liter) of clean water. Freshwater is
preferable, but clean seawater can be used if freshwater is not available.
3. Mix one spoonful (10 grams) of the biocide with water until dissolved.
4. Place the intake strainer into the biocide solution, and pump until water starts flowing out of the
reject hose (indicating that the membrane housing is filled). Stop pumping immediately after
water begins to flow from the reject hose.
5. If seawater was used to mix the biocide solution, repeat the above procedure with freshwater
as soon as it is available.
6. Rinse any biocide solution off the outside of the unit. Allow the unit to dry completely before
storing.
Cheers !
