Yep its a new year amazing

So,time has moved on since SUP entered the the arena.

My question is, have things settled down at your local as
far as stink eye and all that BS?

I know SUP's are fine at mine and are treated like anybody else.

and no this is NOT a gee up,I'm just interested

I reckon instead of assuming you're a Numbat from the beginning like they used to and you'd have to try and prove them wrong, now people can tell if you've got a clue from your paddling, balance and approach to the line up. Just like they can if you're prone paddling.

They still despise the unstable, uninitiated crew that paddle to the top of the peak and take every set only to peg leg and paddle across the waves or send the board of death careering past their children but if you can string a few turns together and not 'waste' waves (in their eyes) or endanger others the acceptance seems to be a bit better.

I'm still a Numbat though.

SUP is generally excepted here...albeit a few SB'ers that will never come around. As CMC said - depends on your ability & etiquette. I'll always be a kook, so will continue to stick to the 'quiet' breaks.

Ya know I've never even concidered likening my self to a numbat untill I read the bit about a slow moving oddity.Anyway I find there is a small minority that dont like mebut they also don't like anyone else except their own little gang, and besides I have selective defness as well.

Hey Mac, I've lurked in the longboard room enough to know you know what you are doing in the line up. so that's half the battle won already. Like me, you might take your McTavish (for example ) longboard out when the waves are decent, and then the SUP when it's obviously a good choice. I find that on some of those smaller or fuller days the SUP is so obviously a the right board for the conditions - and a real fun machine compared to struggling on a surfboard - that there is no stink eye. Just a few people thinking "Geez, he's having a ball. I might have to get a SUP for days like this."
Go for it.
Now I'm heading over to the greenroom to see how much your mates are bagging you.
Cheers, Dave

that would be a big NO. longboarders are still not accepted so most SUP riders around the area still get told in no uncertain terms where to go. but if your big, fat, ugly like me who gives a terd what other narrowminded people(shortboarders) think. anyway thats my rant for the year hope you enjoyed. no i dont.

I used to get a bit of stinkeye from the grey surfer brigade but in the past year have seen that turn around as most of them buy SUPs and have smiles back on their face. If I sit down in the lineup and don't hog the waves (even on fat days where I'm the only one with the right kit to catch anything), I find most of the guys will chat with you. On a couple of occasions where someone has suggested I'm cheating with my paddle, I've let them have a go and after several failed attempts at standing up I find I have a little more respect off them.

I definitely feel that as the numbers grow their is safety in numbers. I often find myself heading to Manly on a busy day as I know there will be a section somewhere on the beach with half a dozen or more guys on SUPs where the surfers have moved aside and left it to them alone.

All that said, there is an alarming trend of rental places sending uninitiated people out to meet their doom.

A couple of weeks ago in Manly the lifesavers had to send the duck out to collect a couple on rental boards that had been caught by the wind and were a mile or so out to sea. And only this weekend I went to fairy bower and there were at least 8 people on rental boards hired from cabbage tree bay, trying to catch waves. I left after two waves as it was too dangerous with them about. They seriously had no idea what they were doing. They were dropping in, catching waves on their knees, and if you know the bower, you know even on a small day it's not a good place for a first time SUPer, particularly at low tide as this was.

I had a longboarder at Noosa National Park this morning tell me i was the first decently behaved SUP rider he had come across...hmmmm but i spose there are a few hogs around here. He then called me onto a nice one so i guess the moral of the story is you get what you give.

Less people doing it down here now (sth cst nsw). The majority of the blokes that were doing it have gone back to riding there mals or shortboards. The one's you see around have gone back upto 10 foot range for the fun factor when its small.

My local is Freshie and I got the same from the "grey ones" as you at Manly, but they seem to have chilled out a lot, I think that there are still a few SUP riders that "steal" all the waves that piss them off but in general they don't mind me, as I am also a short board rider I know most of the locals and often point out where the set is at when I am on the SUP so we get on quite well.

It is all about having fun, so no point in getting into the fight over a wave.

Strangely enough this morning was the first time I've encountered any real negative comments or looks. Some crew of short boarders were having a dig, even though I stayed a good 20-30m away and showed no interest in "their" wave. Couldn't hear exactly what they were saying, but heard it second hand from another SUPer. The usual thing, the young local Hero trying to look good in front of his mates.
Then some other guy on another peak thought I was heading over to paddle inside him, when I was actually positioning myself for a ****ty lump of white water to head in to the beach.... Still not sure if the penny dropped when he saw me head in.
I prefer to surf an average peak any day if it means I'm well away from everyone else.
