Since everybody seems to love the format of the battle of the paddle, participants and spectators, there is certainly a good future for it.
We always refer to it as BOP but as you might now BOP is a trademark and can't be used without some mighty fees.
So how should we call a race similar to the format of the battle of the paddle?
If some organisers want to propose this kind of race format, as it happened in Kirra or Noosa, how should they officially name it so everybody knows what it is without offending anybody ?
It has to be different from just “Sup race” as this usually just means from one point to another.
Any suggestion?

A very good question.

If it was agreed that a true BOP style race needs to involve a surf break rather than flat water, then I suggest "SUP Surf Race" or just "Surf Race" for short.

However if event promoters wanted to run BOP style on flat water such as Port Phillip not-a-Bay, then perhaps it needs a re-think. Maybe "SUP Circuit Race".

SPS,Standup Paddleboard Series.

The Bop has some serious legs imo
and if someone took this by the horns
it will take off.

I reckon SUP surf race is an apt description. As far as I am aware, BOP really only applies to 'surf' locations so SUP surf race is appropriate.

If it was an 'M' shaped course on flat water then sure, I agree with DJ, call it a slalom or something like that.

All I know is, prepare for carnage! Taking off on a wave with some one right beside you on either side just feels wrong!!!!!!!!

My first BOP style race last week was one of the scariest yet best fun things I have done in a long time! Wish I had put in a bit more surf practice on the race board though (flicking out left to get around the middle keg was a whole new experience! - I thought I was entering a triangle course not a an 'M')

Ask Elyse about my dropping in skills! Sorry Elyse!!!

My 2 cents worth

Isn't the BOP event more than a single M shaped race? It is a relay, a distance race and a M shaped surf race with buoys held over a few days.

Why not stick with the familiar theme of 'War on Water?' Also if a series was ever to come about or even just the concept to popularize it could work well in flat water as well. The attraction is the crowd participation and using many different elements and challenges for the paddler to win.

I'd be sticking with battle, war, fight words they seem apt. Slalom to me invokes images of men in aerodynamic helmets and tights.

I think we need to think a little bit bigger than that.

If you were perhaps to convince a major sponsor to fund the event they will require media impact. Take for example the ironman series, if it was called clubbies swimming, running and paddling in the surf race it may not have received the attention or sponsorship it has.

We would all like to see SUP racing get bigger to attract money, elite athletes, media, sales for our manufacturers etc etc. My tip would be to start by thinking big from the beginning. The media will cover it if they think people are interested, this also needs to be facilitated by a dedicated media liasion. Sponsors want a return, to interest the public and media you need to capture their imagination. This is one of the reasons the original term 'Battle of the Paddle' is so great.

My $.02 anyway.

The Cronulla Sutherland SUP Club use this race format at their events and use the term "SUP Le Mans".

Accordingly, there is a SUP Le Mans division this Sunday at the Coreban River Race.

How about the "SURF PADDLE BATTLE" 12.6

Scotts Head SLSC is thinking of holding a surf paddle battle in the winter along with a long sup race and a ski race and a sup surfing event basically a weekend event.

How many sup ers would come?

we have a caravan park right on the beach and we are located half way between Sydney and Brisbane 1hr south of Coffs Harbour wery small coastal town protected from Southerly winds .
any comments

I'd assume "Le Mans" as a trademark is as heavily protected in any form of racing as "Battle of the Paddle".

Is there any reason why it can't just remain as 'Battle of the Paddle' as per other international races.

Obviously it can't be shortened as my understanding is BOP, the anagram is what is trademarked not the actual full name of the race.

If you are looking to change the race name entirely I would go with DJ and call it SUP Surf Race.

Again my 2c worth :-)

it's not "other international races, it's just 1 race in hawai and 1 race in california.

They are trying to put on a big event in France in september and when they realise how much fees they would have to pay to use the name they just had to ditch the idea of calling it like that.

not at all as Le Mans is simply the name of the town in France where the race is held. The car race was traditionally started with the drivers running to their vehicles, which is how the race will begin on Sunday with the participants running (with paddle) to their boards.

SUP Indy is another good name in reference to a "rolling" start.

But it seems that to attract the very good paddlers some price money needs to be on the cards, or you will get only the ones living near scotts heads...

It's more of a SUP-Cross where you paddle a SUP over water that presents an obstacle (ie surf or waves or chop).

SUP Surf is good enough except the purists would get their knickers in a knot if it was in bay slop.

No way is it SUP Slalom. Slalom implies speed and carving through gates and around poles and stuff. There is no way a SUP is ever going to be fast in absolute terms.

How about each event organiser thinks up their own 'out there' name for the event like this one from the US:

Sand & Duel-athlon,

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid776321816001?bckey=AQ~~,AAAADm75WGk~,dAjasFaso71W9fhTZNS7M2ckXr_IoOuU&bclid=61857748001&bctid=840604680001

I hope the link above works, its a hellish looking race!
