Unfortunately for anyone else, other than Rainbow Sandals, looking to organize a short course surf SUP race with the BOP format, will always be referred to as the BOP.
Those guys were the first to use this format which has taken the world by storm. It's hard to change the name since it is a bloody good name for that style of racing. But as someone mentioned earlier, using the BOP name (as it is a trademark or we asume so), may come at a hefty cost if BOP features somewhere in the name title of a separate event.
There are tons of other names you could come up with as CMC has done but it just doesn't have the same ring as the "Battle of the Paddle". They've got it and no one else can have it!
So SUP entusiasts, keep your eyes peeled as this November may see an event of similar format with a twist to be held on the Gold Coast. It has also been rumoured that the Gold Coast Event may be the biggest of its kind on the planet with a monetary prize pool to nearly double the BOP! Watch this space!

no matter what you call it we have to get our own contests going.
we are paying good money to go in these events for no return.
I dont know where i finished in noosa or what time .
malfuction was fun but they didnt give us a time slot to finish in the contest area
so we had to paddle around while another event was on! still had to pay $70 bucks
to do it? im sure there is a better way to do it

As much as it breaks my heart to think that we will never see one of these world series races on Port Phillip (not-a) Bay, I have to agree, surf is the key. If the sport of SUP racing is to achieve mainstream popularity, it will be due to the unique appeal of powerful athletes standing up on a board and surfing while racing. It has speed, it has danger, it has the glamour of the surf culture, it has buff bodies, it has genuine sex appeal. It's a ready-made TV sport.

And frankly, I think BOP or battle of the paddle as a brand name attempting to cut through consumer consciousness comes up short. In fact, I think it blows chunks.

Ooooo, it's a battle. And ooooo, they have paddles. Boppity-bop, wackity-wack, right on the buttock. Another for me please, I've been awfully naughty!

Yes, that's sex appeal, but rather lame. Kind of like some kinky 60s British carry-on style titty romp.

I agree,Battle of the Paddle has a nice ring to it.

How about, Battle of the Blade or Battle of the Blades.

BOB

You could add the word (Series) which in itself is a dam
fine word used world wide.

I think no matter whatever is chosen it will be second
to BOP

kind of agree with you
Will I go again at the malfunction for the SUP race next year? not sure....
And I don't say it was not fun but $70 for what we got seems a bit strange to me

Yes but that would result in maybe one race a year if we were lucky which doesn't solve the ongoing issue of what to call this style of racing without relying upon the limitations of a relatively minor footwear company's marketing budget.

The name is not as important as the work behind the event. I know I came up with a few of the worst names ever HOWEVER my point was.....

There's no point in having one bite at this. It sounds like Peasey has something special lined up, just imagine if he can pull it off to the point that whoever he has ligned up to put up that much cash sees the benefit and exposure from the event to go again. If not them maybe someone else. That takes work, done by people with a vision that it can be huge....

My point was that it is worth thinking big. It's exciting, great to watch and could be worth a lot of money...... Why think small??

Edit: I must add that if anyone is thinking BIG it's Peasey, we should all be glad he's on the job.

Is there any reason why it can't just remain as 'Battle of the Paddle' as per other international races.

Obviously it can't be shortened as my understanding is BOP, the anagram is what is trademarked not the actual full name of the race.

The US trademarks web site has Battle of the Paddle listed as trademarked under Rainbow Sandals. It has the trade mark listed as: Hosting a competitive paddle board racing event and concert to raise funds for charitable purposes.

There are many listings for "BOP" from software companies to teen magazines.

I think Rainbow Sandals has done this style of racing a disservice by enforcing trade mark restrictions in other countries. Now everyone has to come up with something different to explain and advertise what essentially is the same thing. In the end it will probably be called whatever the first non industry related major sponsor comes up with or what ever the general public grasps onto. Having SUP in the title probably wont cut it as most general public wouldn't know what the term meant.

Surf Course Paddle Racing sort of fits, but more explains it rather than sounds cool.

The winner can say 'Piece of Piss'

Those that don't can say they performed 'Piss Poor'

And those with excuses as to why they should have done better 'Pissed off'

Not to mention 'hitting the piss' a bit later on while everyone 'takes the piss' out of each other

I think you're on to something Lacey.

from what I've heard in France they've been asked over Aus$30000 to use the name "battle of paddle"
I think it would make a lot of organisers here think twice and scratch their heads to find their own name!

So given what it says in the trade mark description, I wonder what charity they were planning on giving the $30000 to??
