Lost my daughter to surfing some 10 years ago, this goose let loose without a legrope, bang into her ear and opened her up like nothing, many stitches later not good for any 10 year old and not a good way to start a holiday.

Hint, stray board without a legrope, collects someone.... Family member delivers a right hook to the person who is stupid enough to claim the board....

whoa, this is getting nasty.

sure you should wear a leggie but plenty don't.

it's not against the law, it's not like a seatbelt.

if it's not against the law and you go punching someone out, you may find yourself on the wrong side of the law no matter whether you think your right

Ok Rocky, maybe Mac posted his reply about his daughter the same time as i posted mine, so it wasnt there to read. And it seems you were already in the know about his situation...maybe quote or put it in sime context for others.....as for punching someone out, would you do this to the guy riding a clubbie ski, the person or people in Oc's or the kid on a clubbie mal??? last time I looked none of these had leggies.....what the difference between not wareing one and punching someone out? Some old mals dont even have a spot to attach the leg rope.

Mac, you say lost your daughther, some would read that as death...but Im assuming she just doesnt want to surf anymore?

Even if it was law you can't go punching people out. It leaves too many bruises as evidence, first learn the gentle art of pressure point therapy, then locate areas applicable ie; rails, fins and bottom of board just to name a few.

or at least this is what I've been told.

Yes Husq, she is well and truly alive,it was a shame as she really enjoyed her surfing.
We were in a remote spot without car or phone we had to leave the boards on the beach and walk a k to find help,a really good guy delivered our boards back to our hotel later and another kind lady drove us to hospital.

No legrope is irresponsible in my book.
I have been riding shorties for 30+ years and whenever I see a loose board from a too cool for school 'I am a wannabe pro' surfer I usually make sure they have to swim a little further. Personally I could never forgive myself if I wasnt wearing a leggie and my board hit and hurt a little kid.

Not one to get involved with discussions much, but will done the flame suit.
(Lacey, not an attack on you here, just my thoughts)

Correct it's not against the law not to wear a leggie, like a seat belt, which is required by law. However, why did this become law..IMHO, because even though it would be common sense to wear something that protects you and others... it seems common sense may not be that common, hence it became law.
Leggie protects the other person and to some extent your property.
Just imagine a child gets hurt..... some legal boffin gets hold of it... negligence is proved... etc etc... You may find "the leggie" may become law. We need to have common sense.
(If you do not think this is possible... consider recent events that lead to, that you now need a "special" licence to ride a jet ski, yet a std recreational boat licence allows you own and drive a vessel far larger, far quicker and potentially require far more skill to operate. No I do not own a jet ski).

Personally I witnessed a child get hit last year in Caloundra buy a board. Yes a small kid was hurt... No leggie and board was lost in only small surf. It was handled very well by all there, but the rider in question was very disturbed emotionally by his actions. And I mean he was very very upset at what he had done. I am sure that none of us would want that on our conscience.

In regards to punching someone out.. be wearing a leggie or seatbelt legal or not.. you will find yourself on the wrong side of the law.

Wearing a leggie is just common sense. It should not need to be the law!
We should not need the law to protect us from ourselves... this is our job!

Simple test to see if you should use a leggie:
1. During your session will you be in constant control and contact of your board at all times.
2. Is there anyone at all within 300m from you
3. Would you want to be on the receiving end of a board lost in the waves

I think if you answered no to ANY of these then the default is the leggie!

eye of the tiger you people get so serious. i would never advocate that violence is the answer to problems, but sometimes some people need a short one to the chin,in the water or out. i do like the pressure point idea though. lighten up champ dant..dant dant dant eye of the tiger

Just because you have a legrope on does not mean it will not hit anybody, as I see it all the time with people letting there boards fling back and wipeout whoever is behind them! Even when people wipeout on the wave, I have seen boards with legropes on them hit people! If you put a leggie on your board, what about your paddle. I think it is not the board or the paddle, but the kook on it or the other kooks in the water that can not read the line up! Any board over 8 foot is gay! ****!

I surfed without a legrope for about 7 years 1966-1973 and even then they were pretty lousy for about 5 years. Peter Clark in Torquay, did a lot of testing I think he started Balin (I'm probably wrong). We all thought they were a godsend at the time. This argument/thread is stupid. Wear a leg rope for all of the reasons outlined above. Don't hit anyone ever because it is ILLEGAL even threatening to do so is ILLEGAL I agree with Climber who used my favourite saying "Common sense is not very common!" Wake up to yourselves and Ben go hassle some kid at Burleigh for the inside position in one foot slop, it seems like the nice type of guy you are. Have you ever been out in 6ft waves and over? Probably not or you'd know why you wear a leg rope!

I don't know what's funnier, being told to lighten up by someone who punches people out, or the responses to this thread that was started as joke because somone lost there bundle in the surf when they paddled out and a guy on a wave came close to him. At which point a leg rope would have made no difference and maybe he should have given the guy on the wave some room. But chose to carry on like a pork chop about lack of leggie, all the while said mates sup buddy also didn't have a leggie....irony

On that note can we add to the common sense debate that rages here quite amusingly that if someone is coming towards you on a wave when you are paddling back out that you turn to face them instead of leaving your 10 feet of broadside as an obstacle sideways. It's just a little bit easier to get around 3 feet than 10.
