Foils don't necessarily need long a strut/mast either. Especially on flat water. Slingshot make a 38! You'd be touching down a lot. Or you could cut down an ally strut to suit. Norfolk Island has a 1.3 metre tidal range. How big is the tidal sailing window in that lagoon with a 490 fin?

The 550/490 conversation was in regard to masts - for the sails that this thread is about. Not foil masts.

The OP has mentioned fins often get ruined at this spot, and with fins there are plenty of designs to make them shallower so I doubt they are using 40cm deep fins there.

People must be bored the OP asked about cams on big sails. Not about foiling or waiting till its 18+ to sail.

To be fair, The OP wasn't asking for opinions on using large sails, he was asking for opinions on cams or not in large sails. each to their own and the conditions they sail in hey. We need big sails around here, if my biggest was a 7.1 would have had about 2 sails since Feb. To the OP, you said you already have something around ~8.5 sqm, not sure 1/2 a meter extra will give you much more bottom end - depending on what the 8.5 is, it's diminishing returns as sails get bigger and 1/2 a meter is a small increment in big sizes.

The question was "thinking of buying a 9.0 would you get cams ? " and you told him he didn't need a 9.0 his 8.5 would do. Less than half the responders actually answered the question and you weren't one of them

Hey Tardy I recently got a 9.5 cheetah and was surprised to find that it planed very easy in 13kt the other day. Now this was on a formula board and Im 89kg so not much weight difference but I needed 14/15 with this combo until I recently watched a Guy Cribb video on you tube explaining the proper technique to get a board planing and in light wind he never uses the harness until planing because this allows you to hang down and push the board with your front foot harder. I have always been a lazy sailor and just hung in the harness until the board will plane. Now you probably already know this, you've been sailing longer than me but I was surprised to find this out after 20 years sailing it has definitely worked for me. The next day I went out on the F race with 7.0 cheetah and it was forecast to hit 20kt but only got to 16 and I still had a ball I have always needed 19/20 with this combo. I say don't over think it go with your gut you know the location you sail. Back when I started out I would buy what ever I could get second hand and ended up with a mix of flex top, C/C, hard top, camed, non camed and so on and then I bought a brand new Ezzy and have bought only Ezzy since. Can go from 7.0 one day to 9.5 the next and they feel and sail the same to me. I like to just keep it as uncomplicated as possible it increases the whole experience for me, nothing worse than having rigging problems and doubts on the beach when you just want to get out there.

Sails of all sizes have there place otherwise manufactures wouldn't make them, retailers sell'm & consumers buy'm - that's now very clear from being hammered by many above. Great! Got the response I was looking for.

Yes I'd go cams if you must go 9.0. But cammy slalom sails of 9.0 are designed to be ridden overpowered by pros. Has anybody tried a cammy foil sail on a fin board for max light wind performance? I've got a twin cam 6.0 foil sail and it's got way more grunt than a 6.0 freeride twin cam.

I'D like to know if it would work ok too ...

Thanks mob dog The more I think of the 9,5 lion ,the more it makes sense ...good low down grunt ,and durability .and as someone mentioned earlier .5 of a metre may not be enough of a jump ,and i don't fear big sails anymore . but also am thinking a ack -pro 9,1 P7 .only because it will handle more wind ,and is a very fast sail.

The free race ACK would be a good choice, narrower luff tube so doesn't feel as heavy and 3 cam stability and wind range. One of the local lads loves his ACK's and he's fast on them too. Plus, black looks cool.

there's defo a difference with cams vs no cams, for me 9m sails need cams. They feel more constant power in light winds, accelerate better out of gybes, and they are easier to hang on to if the wind picks up during a session.

What can i say? I do formula, and I do love formula! Only two sails, one mast, one boom, two fins! 9.4 and 11m both with 4 cams.
i also do slalom and waves, on wave sails my gap is 0.5m from 4 to 6m. On slalom my gap is 1.5m from 6 to 9.4, on formula my gap also is 1.5m.
on formula i go upwind and downwind.. when the wind pick up, i try to do more "hard" angles to catch less wind, and if the wind drops a bit i can go "reaching"
in my opinion cambered sails are more stable in gusts and help me to keep planning on lulls :D

now i'm learning more about "stance".
