So we have a majority yes decision from the advisory board, so the motion logger is approved.

One question for those who know better than me...
With the GW-60, if I sailed in the morning, turned the gps off, then sailed again in the afternoon, when I downloaded the data with the Watch utility, it was one file which was easy to download to KA72, then on to GPSTC. If I do the same two, separate sessions with the logger, it comes as two separate files, so separate downloads to KA72.
Now I know that the two separate files can be joined using a separate program such as Speedreader, but this is a step, and skill, I would like to avoid. Is there any way around this?

Some observation on the simple logger after a few days of testing: (FW V3000)

I found the device is quite easy to use and learn to setup and connect.

It has one button and one LED. The back has slots to thread the arm band through.

Of course, the simple logger does not have a screen and cannot provide any feedback on the water.

The download of files to Windows, Macintosh and Linux computers is straightforward via WiFi connection to your computer or some smart phones using a Browser, although I found it can take a while, up to a minute or more to make the WiFi connection and do the download. It can also take 30 second to a minute to go to the next menu page. Have patience, it will happen if you wait a bit.

The device also has some nice built in browser tools for naming and organising you session data.

Updating of firmware also looks quite straightforward through the same interface.

There are very few options in the settings. It is set to log at a fixed 10Hz. The user can set the username, speed and distance units and the Time Zone.

The logger saves the data in the .OAO file format like the LCD screen Motion. This can be read directly by all the popular analysis programs, but not by RealSpeed without conversion.

The device is set to use up to 20 of the best satellite signal sources from three GNSS systems, GPS, GLONASS and Galileo. (Apparently, this has been adjusted to 18 bests in FW V 3001)

I have not tested ultimate battery endurance.

Waterproofing seems bombproof. It is completely sealed (potted) in plastic.

It comes with a simple elastic strap for wearing on the upper arm. This may be problematic for a couple of reasons. It can slip aound and under the arm too easily. It could also be stripped completely off the arm in a crash and be lost as it will not float. I recommend using it in one of the common arm band bags to that even if it stripped off in a crash, it should still float and be easily retrieved.

It is quite small compared with all other devices. It is approximately 50mm x 54mm x 13.5mm. It will most likely easily fit inside many helmets.

The induction pad for charging that is included with the GPS and seems to work well

The Motion simple logger, like all other such devices, should be worn on the upper arm or head for best results. because it is, by design, setup to only use satelltes with a strong signal, it does not work like some other GPS when worn in a compromised position in that it may quickly drop to using a small number of satellites if sky view is compromised. This means that it may not record data or might have lost points if worn in a pocket on the front or back of the body, and beneath any material that can get wet and therefore reduce satellite signal strength. See Juliens logic and description in an earlier post - this may sound like a problem to some people, but it is actually a very well thought out advantage.

A picture for size comparison:

I updated the firmware today to V3001. I was hoping it would speed up the WiFi response to load the webpage. It may be a bit quicker but it is still painfully slow in Safari. It is better on my MacBook in Firefox, but still often takes 1-2 minutes to load the first page and then again each of the susequent ones. Are others finding this with their's, or is it just my old slow computer?

I also did another Motorbike test today using my Windsurfing helmet with two Motion Loggers in it side by side. The results are quite an eye opener. It is most difficult to distinguish the two speed graph lines in a lot of it, they are so close. Again, the small sawtooth is in pretty fair correlation. Here is a Screenshot showing the 4 gear changes as I accelerate.

Here is the higher speed part. Here I think there is a bit more vibration and buffeting of my helmet, but, to my eyes, there is still noticeable correlation in the sawtooth:

I'm still hanging out to get a good sail test but there is no sailing wind in the forecast period at all.

As a consolation, the surfing should be excellent all week!

Hi Andrew, on our units,( we are all using iPhones) the webpage WiFi connect takes seconds; that is, it is all seamless. Changing between the landing page, log page and settings page is instantaneous. I have not connected to laptop yet as I do all, even update firmware, via phone. The actual update to 3001 took about 15sec. Hope this gives you a comparison to use. Cheers.

Thanks Mikey, I connected to my Iphone and it is indeed very quick. It must just be my old Laptop.

Speed up attempt for MacOS-Safari users,
layout improvement attempt for smartphone users,
#3002 : www.motion-gps.com/motion/downloads/Motion-Small-3002.bin

You might need to refresh the website by pressing SHIFT+F5 keys on Windows or CMD+R keys on Mac to clear your browser's cache.

Thanks Julien.

Today, the HTML page loaded really quickly on the first logger with V3001 in Safari. I then updated it to V3002, also went quickly and smoothly.
I connected the second Logger and it didnt load immediately.

I did the 'Commd/R flush cache' and it then loaded instantly. This seems to have been my issue.

I then uploaded V3002 to the second logger quickly and smoothly as well.

Thank You.

Hi Julien,
I have just updated my logger to version V3002. I have just noticed that when the logger is turned off (one long press red light fading out) and I give the button one short press (which used to be to check that the longer was off= no light), it now in fact turns the longer ON.
When I changed back to version V3001, the logger returned back to- when the logger is off, and one short button press and there is no light confirming that the logger is off (as per instructions). Hope this makes sense.

That would be an awesome update for those of use who like to do the simple posting through KA72. One thing that I did like about the GW60. (If it is a possibility)

Nice catch Mikey, here's 3003 : www.motion-gps.com/motion/downloads/Motion-Small-3003.bin

This means everyone on 3002 will wake up to an empty battery. Good reminder that these are bugful preview firmwares, don't rush to them.

I will add one-log-per-day next weekend.

In GPS Speedreader, you can use "Combine files..." in the "File" menu to combine any number of files from the same day. Just hit cancel in the "Open" dialog when you've opened all the files you want to join. Downloads at ecwindfest.org/GPS/GPSSpeedreader.html

The other advantages of GPSSpeedreader, is it's ability to post straight to the GPSTC, it's better method of calculating hours and the way it handles missed points.

Post best result for each category from both files and combine your kms

OK but for the 5x10 you really need to get the 5 best out of both files, not the best result from one file, so you need 10 results to choose the best 5 out of, to work out the average.

Recommended update, 3006 : www.motion-gps.com/motion/downloads/Motion-Small-3006.bin

Fixes an important bug, improves support of older browsers, better use of space on smartphones. I'd like feedback on this last one.

Don't forget to refresh the browser cache (F5 on Windows, CMD+R on Mac).

Updating on phone is easy... and I am a technology-tragic. (Seriously I am hopeless and that's why I love this logger.)Follow the instructions on the website.

Done. On phone the whole process took less than a minute. Love the simplicity of this logger.

Have been researching how to 'refresh the browser cache' (control f5 on Windows) on an iPhone. Have found this path which seems to do it. If I am wrong, please tell me.

Who has the highest ID #. Mine are 0028 and 0030.

I recon there have to have been at least 50 or 60 ordered.

I have used it a lot for testing, but no sailing session yet.
